Yes, I have been unable to run avast!5 PRO or Free on my main computer. Had to go to another antivirus program and I am another of avast! proponents.
You have seen this graphic here before posted by another user. This one is mine. Click on scan and the program locks up and a hard reboot is required. Takes a few days before it misbehaves.
Well, I removed my OTHER antivirus program, reinstalled avast! Pro on 5/23 and a week later same thing. I put up with it until this morning-- uninstalled and reinstalled avast! and at this moment it seems fine. If another program is causing this problem, does anyone have an idea how I can identify the problem.
Many thanks.

I know this stuff. ;)

What is the other AV? Current OS? What other security/proxy type programs are you still using? There is a rather extensive list of custom uninstallers at http://uninstallers.blogspot.com/ that may help if you removed something else before the problem started. Was there an event you can point to where this may have started? Good luck!

Ed, I'm sorry- too much on my mind right now. OS is XP SP3. Other antivirus was MSE which I installed because I could not get Version 5 to play nice on my Main computer. Avast! works fine on my 4 other computers.
SAS Pro And MBAM paid also installed.
I cannot point to any event which may have started this. I did remove some small programs thinking that they were in a position to be sacrificed. Didn't make any difference.
Nice to see you - again. :)

Good you're baaaaaack. ;)
So maybe you want to tell us about the other programs running on your system...??

Should mention that 4 of my computers are configured pretty much the same.
I'm not aware of how to list them all short of typing them all in but here's an example:

You're welcome..! Funny but nice way to list the programs. ;D
As you mentioned that all your machines are configured similar.
Your problem seems to be ZoneAlarm..! Users reported problems with it.
Drop it and replace it with other free firewall software.

OK, I have Zone Alarm Pro on all 5 computers but if that solves my problem--off with it's head.
The avast! installation lasts about a week on this computer before it causes problems. Pro was installed on this computer on 30 January and has been uninstalled and reinstalled several times.
Let me install another firewall. We shall see what happens in a week or so.
Thanks all.

OK, boys and girls- Zone Alarm Pro has been uninstalled and I found a Pro License of Online Armor which expires 10 August 2010. Figured I might as well get my money's worth.
Let's see what happens after a week or so.
Thanks all.

Asyn, the problem is on ONE computer only.
No problem at all with the others. Should have mentioned that earlier which makes me suspect that Zone Alarm is not really the problem..

Your machine is a bit bloated, but nothing I could find should make big troubles.

I remember a German girl and a few English speaking.
Last time I was in Wien was 1985. Stayed at the Intercontinental. Beautiful city and beautiful country.

OK any suggestions are welcome. I forgot to add that when clicking on scan problem occurs it also affects right click scanning on explorer as well. Right click, select scan a file and it may take several minutes to report it's finding OR it may lock up (fail to respond) forcing a hard reboot.
There are fewer programs on this computer than any of my others. This is essentially my browse the Internet computer.

@ jadinolf,
Do you have OA on all your machines or only this one with the problem? I still think ZA is the problem and as Asyn mentioned earlier others have reported problems between avast and ZA (except the ZA firewall). In addition, I believe there is also a conflict with OA and ZA, but you should clarify with them on this. You shouldn't run two third-party firewalls on the same machine. My recommendation is to remove ZA since you have OA.

The igloo has melted as its Summer here.
By the way, I just installed Privatefirewall V7 on my XP Pro system and I like it so far.

I was in Böblingen for a few days when I was working attending a course and enjoyed the city and had some good beer with others on the course.

Have you already tried to perform a clean boot to isolate the problem.
I love registry fixers en system utilities for tuning and fixing my pc :(

I installed OA because it was suggested that I get rid of ZA on this computer so it is just on this computer. The other 4 have ZA Pro.
This has become a moot point since I am now formatting the drive on the problematic computer and will install XP with minimal programs. I hate to have to do this. Last time was 2 Jan 2009.

The formatting had nothing to do with avast!. There were other problems.

Nevertheless it should also help with your avast problem, as there's nothing better than a fresh system.

Some of the programs you had installed are questionable IMO. I have seen conflicts caused by DiskKeepers filter driver, PowerDesk has file indexing capability if enabled could cause a conflict. Utilities like jv power tools, Tuneup Utilities etc.etc.etc. could cause problems so I'd leave them out of the mix until all your normally used programs are installed and you are running without problems. Oh and Codec packs, your just looking for trouble.

Thanks for the advice. Bear in mind I have 5 computers and all of the programs you mentioned are on those computers with no problems. Anyway, I DO intend to leave the CODEC pack out. Didn't know what it did anyway.
OK, XP is adjusting my screen resolution so I've got to get to work.
Wish me luck. ;D
