Title: Avast Bug Tracker
Post by: scythe944 on June 10, 2010, 08:55:06 PM
I posted something about this before in another thread, but thought it might deserve it's own topic for discussion.

Currently, I see a bunch of stuff being worked on by Avast.  There are still bugs in the software, and they are working them out.

The only problem is that they're scattered in posts all over the place, and unless you search for a specific error code / problem, you'd never know that it was a bug.

I'm calling out to Avast software to think about using a bug tracking system to help us users find out what's been identified as a bug, what's being worked on, and what has been fixed.

There are plenty of open source options available.  Wordpress uses this: http://trac.edgewall.org/ and it looks pretty good.

Anybody else think it might be a good idea?

This may be something that you want to discuss in a PM with Vlk.  I believe it is something more appropriate for the devs. than the general users.  I think it's nice that you care enough to bring something like this to their attention to continue to improve avast.  :)

public bug trackers are mostly used in the OSS community, and I don't know of any closed source software company using that. Don't get me wrong, bug trackers are fantastic (for Linux, Mozilla, Chrome...) but they mainly imply that the devs post on them together with the users reporting bugs and testing files, while the devs are sharing pieces of code in the open while attempting to resolve the bugs, and again, I doubt that a mainly closed source and commercial company like Avast can be interested. (on a side note, Avast 5 might integrate many oss but the core components are Avast, and closed source)

You're right, Logos..!
Nevertheless, a simple bug-list would still be a good idea...

I'm stuck there, can't register anymore ;D pm'ed VLK, no answer ??? >>> I stupidly switched back to the first registration page, and clicked on proceed while I was in the middle of completing the registration process (with password etc...) on another page - the one you get to when you use the "one time link". Now this link isn't valid anymore, and "Logos" is already registered ??? with no password >>> reset doesn't work as no password was entered in the first place, so I'm just stuck, unless I register again with another username, and I don't want to ::) Any help appreciated ;)

I am not sure this should even be posted...

I noticed this a while ago, in the signature of a dev, and after registering I realised that it is not something really suited for the likes of the users.
It is more for the use of the devs

As we register now, we can post, which is where I have a problem...soon I can see that everyone will be registering and posting in this unmoderated list.

I suppose if the accounts were initially generated with a read-only option then it would be better.

Scott

@Logos

I had a similar problem, apparently I had tried to register a while ago...had to make a new account at the time...

Should I have left my mouth shout?  :-[ :-\

Vlk does not answer to PM, only emails.

I might try an email then, but honestly, I was just curious about the bug tracker, without being sure at all that it was relevant for users...on the other hand, public registration is open, which is kinda weird...

lol okay ;D but I might in fact just skip the bug tracker, unless someone from Avast comes to post and explain that it can be indeed useful and relevant for users to register, which I doubt more and more...

Maybe you better do skip it, as I didn't see any bug posted by a user, so I'm not sure if we would be welcome there at all... :(
Tech, please enlighten us, as you suggested this link... Did you post there already..??

The bug tracker at bt.avast.com isn't really supposed to be used by public. Plus it was really only used for the v5.0 release cycle.
If you think you have found a bug, it's better to communicate it directly (e.g. by creating a post on the forum and optionally reporting it to the mods).

Thanks
Vlk
