Title: Not Sure if Avast related or not
Post by: bikemanAMD on June 17, 2010, 04:15:54 PM
Here are the Symptoms, maybe someone can determine if this is Avast related or ISP related

Using Second Life 3D Game
Version 1.23, and 201 it happens in
Dj Software: Sam Broadcaster 4.3.6
Windows 7 64bit

When Djing in Second Life, Bandwidth drops to well below 1mb per second, so slow i end up with stuttering, very laggy, and unable to do much at all, changed Dj streams already, reported to at&t, without much help, reset the 2wire device daily, even tried another antivirus which i really didn't wanna do, since i've been using Avast since 2006...about to reinstall Avast since problem remains even with other program, just want it all to work great together.    Should i call into at&t dsl tech support again?   (not sure if they can help or not though)

could my connection be throttled whenever i dj for using too much bandwidth, last night's speed test while djing was the following results

Am wired to the modem as well

well if not Avast related, then i guess Mods can delete this post

@ bikemanAMD

Well if you are not willing to even indicate what country you are in in your PROFILE and do not place meaningful information in your signature then you need to have a Second Life where reality fades.   ;D

@ bikemanAMD

There are several topics about slowdowns and they seem to have different solutions.

Thankfully I do not have a problem:

I am using a 2wire modem with DSL.

What speed are you paying for?

1. Drop Spybot..!!
2. If you should still experience troubles with system restore, disable avast self defence before using it.
3. Don't forget to enable self defence afterwards again..!

Get Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (MBAM) and keep it updated daily then run a Quick scan:
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Make sure Windows Defender is updated daily through its portal:
Latest definition version: 1.85.140.0
http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Definitions/ADL.aspx <== download then run the 64-bit  mpas-fex64.exe installer

I'm Paying for at&t Elite Package, 6.0mbs, upload 768K's

Think it's fine when I"M not djing in second life, but massive speed drop when i'm Djing in Second life

will run another speed test now just to see if it's slow still or right speeds

http://www.speedtest.net/result/851537243.png

now what the modem's synced at

Connection Speed:
• Incoming: 6016 kbps
• Outgoing: 768 kbps

Really don't know what to do anymore, at&t techs tried telling me it's my antivirus causing the slowdowns, and i should switch antivirus programs, but i can't see how it's Avast causing the slower speeds at all.  Avast is so much better than MSE, or Mcafee

What happens if you temporary disable webshield.
Are you using the default settings.

Trial & Error. Replace Avast with MSE or whatever and see if there is a difference and if there is you can at least start there.

I have no idea what Djing in Second life means and Googling it brings up some interesting hits.

If you are streaming music to Second life then your connection speed will suffer.

Yes that means streaming music to Second life, and never had this problem til now, was Djing in Second life in 2 yers, and i'm already trying MSE as a test to see what happens.

Behavior Shield was disabled on Avast install, Webshield was default, P2p was set to programs i only use, as well as IM Shield

gonna retest speed then determine if i'm gonna just have to live with it, or see if there is anything else i can do

current test with MSE in

Yeah, and still don't know exactly what it is, leaning towards the Games servers using more bandwidth than it should i suppose, connection is fine outside of the game, Avast is back in since it's the Antivirus protection i wanna use, gonna run a spyware scan with MalwareBytes Antimalware free edition in a minute, and will let you all know the results tomorrow, too late tonight to stay up and keep working on this.

Well Nothing found with Malwarebytes antimalware, so i'm guessing just an issue with the 3d game itself, speed tests withoutt the game open, are nice and fast, so not gonna worry on it anymore

and very happy with Avast 5.0.545

Hi There, I was wondering if we can use Avast 5.0.545 Free with Malwarebytes Anti-malware - I have read on the internet in my forums that people are experiencing problems while using the two together :( I was using Avast 4.8 Free with MBAM earlier and was happy with both - had an OS crash (the crash was h/w related) and re-did everything clean post which I have installed the latest release of Avast 5.0 Free - very happy with it but would like to know if I can use MBAM or any other free Anti-spyware program in combination with Avast 5. Spybot S&D and Lavasoft's Ad-aware are a couple of other alternatives that I can think of but am not sure whether it's advisable to use them with Avast 5 - please help!
