Title: *** INTRODUCING: New pre-release build of avast [NOW 5.0.590] ***
Post by: Vlk on June 23, 2010, 01:09:32 AM
The update has now been officially released as 5.0.594.
Thanks to everyone who helped testing.

Hi *,

we'll soon be releasing a new build of avast 5 Free/Pro/IS. As usual, we're making the build available for public testing before it's officially released (so far the version number is 5.0.590).

How to get it
links removed

How to install it
Just run the setup executable (links above). You can either install it from scratch, or on top of an existing avast installation (installing over both 5.0.xxx or 4.8.yyy should be fine). Users from the previous beta build (5.0.584) can update directly by using the built-in Program update feature. A reboot will be required to complete the installation.

Also, if you're already using the previous beta build 5.0.492 or 499, you can go to 5.0.504 by simply invoking the program update feature from within the avast GUI.

What's new
Most notable improvements include:
- improved interaction with Windows System Restore; namely, avast now auto-repairs itself when it detects a corrupted VPS due to a System Restore (or other reasons)
- aswSP.sys: solved a minor stability issue
- solved a problem related to inserting of the license files
- added the activation codes feature
- improvements in the avast! sandbox
- solved a problem when avast was continuously slowing down (especially in conjunction with the screensaver)
- performance improvements in the Behavior Shield
- avast Screen saver now accessible even in 64-bit Windows Vista
- stability improvement in aswTdi.sys (solved a compatibility problem with AVG)
- IS firewall: solved a potential BSOD condition
- various improvements in the avast! sandbox module
- minor fixes in the GUI
- added Catalan and Belarusian language packs

And new in v5.0.590:
- solved intermittent hangs during full scan
- added more logging in the service (should be useful to debug potential service crash issues)
- added Romanian language pack (still incomplete)

Thanks much
Vlk

Possible Bug Report--Custom Scan, XP SP3 Desktop

Got Stuck during the scan, and wouldn't finish, unknown if it i was way i had setup the custom scan or what--had it setup for scanning all files/packers, storing data in the cache since just reinstalled Avast 5 on that desktop--cleanly

(same custom scan is ran on all the other Desktops/laptops here though--weekly)

If yes, do the avast! processes use any CPU (while frozen) or not?

Did not Freeze up--finished the entire scan, was doing PC repair on other PC, so i wasn't watching it as closely as before--all is well it appears now, now to finish up maintenance on Desktop 5, and transfer some hardware to Desktop PC 2

Hi
Which compatibility problem do you mean? The one with linkscanner?

It was a BSOD condition. We don't quite know what exactly was necessary to simulate the problem, but according to the Windows Error Reporting data we're getting, it was happening to roughly 400 people a day.

1. Why aren't you answering my question?

2. Strange startup items (runonce) that left after the installation and are, as far I could see, responsible to MS Outlook startup after boot.

Will you make Avast! compatible with Sandboxie in a way like v4.8 was - so that one can scan inside a sandbox (a sandboxed quickscan)? In v5.0 that's not possible.

I have a disastrous 5.0.584 update also... But I thought the problem was elsewhere.
Long boot time, freezing, and so on.
I've restored an old Comodo Time Machine snapshot.
Tried again and seems to be working.
I've mounted the problematic snapshot into Comodo and I can't see any minidump of avast there.
Also, there are three startup items... Why?

Trying 584 on 3 PCs now.

My Windows7 64 bit machine still doesn't like it!

Internet Explorer 7 32 bit still crashes randomly and often when in sandbox mode.  IE goes white (and sometimes black) and unresponsive.  I tried the 'No add-ons' version as well, and that does the same.  One thing that seems to trigger it is opening or switching tabs.

Sandboxed Chrome and flash is still a non-starter.

Incidentally, I can confirm some observations from elsewhere on the forum...Sandboxed 64 bit IE is totally stable on this PC.

I installed 5.0.584 last night and I tried to run a full scan.... the full scan never ends or gets stucked in 18% or gets stuck in 29%... the speed goes down gradually then.

Have anyone notice this?  I am not infected... I just run a full scan with mbam in safe mode everything went fine.

When I run the full scan and Avast stops in one file stays there forever after that Firefox 3.6.4 stops and the mouse does not let me do anything.

The quick scan finishes well, I have memory scan that I did myself and finishes well too, the problem is in the full scan only...

Please advise..rm

Do you mean sf.bin? There shouldn't normally be more than one (unless more than one scan is running at the time).
Well, the resident protection might call it too, but that would be a coincidence (I mean, it would be unrelated to the scan in progress).

Do those processes use any CPU? Are they really stuck (i.e. their process ID doesn't change), or are they finishing and new ones are being started (every few seconds maybe)?
Title: Re: *** INTRODUCING: New pre-release build of avast [5.0.584] ***
Post by: cadremis on June 24, 2010, 02:44:19 PM
Yes they are sf.bin and I'm only running one scan at a time.... they come and go... my problem now is that when I started to make a scan with SAS it got stuck to because Avast checks the same files than SAS.

I haven't been able to pass 29% when a full scan is started. After the computer gets stuck, nothing I can do and I have to re-starte by force.

Title: Re: *** INTRODUCING: New pre-release build of avast [5.0.584] ***
Post by: igor on June 24, 2010, 02:58:28 PM
No, I don't mean memory usage (or what is "244 k")... I mean the PID column - which is kinda random ID number a process gets associated with when it starts.
Normally, the sf.bin process runs only shortly (a few seconds at most). So, my question is if those four sf.bin processes you see are "fixed" - their PID doesn't change, or if it changes every few seconds (which would mean the processes exist and new ones are started).

It might also be helpful to get Process Explorer (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx), select the sf.bin process in the list, press Ctrl+H and scroll to the "File" handles in to lower pane - to see what file is opened (and whether all of those sf.bin processes have opened the same scanned file).

Booting brought back the avast working. But something is unstable and I do not know how to troubleshoot.

Yes and No.

When I see an issue with the sandbox ( I mainly focus on that part when testing ) I email Petr Kurtin about it. Petr seems to appreciate such one on one conversations to troubleshoot issues ( In fact we are in the middle of one right now ;D ) and you don't have the interference of other people as you do have on the forum ;)

@Yandros: it's strange, because all these bugs were already fixed... now it seems, build 584 sometimes didn't update sandbox driver. I got some setup.log files + drivers from Rednose's computer and it confirms my opinion. Could you please check time & date of \Windows\system32\drivers\aswSnx.sys file? Is it from 06/05/2010 or 22/06/2010? Thanks.

I take it this means that there will be a pre-build after this one, that will fix the bugs in Beta form, followed by a main release.

Spoke too soon.  I'd changed my usual IE link to 64 bit, so was testing the wrong version!

The problem is still there.  If I open one or two additional tabs in sandboxed IE 8 32 bit (no add-ins) (Win7 64 Ultimate), solid black/white screens happen more often than not.

Flash is fine in Chrome now though!

@Yandros: tested IE8 x86 (Win7 x64) and it works fine here. So, when you get black/white screens, run Task Manager (taskmgr.exe), go to iexplore.exe process, right-click on it and choose "Create dump file" and upload it on ftp (http://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=18). Please note you may have more iexplore.exe processes running - so you need to generate dump file for each iexplore.exe process. Thanks.

Thanks.

3 files uploaded.  Look for Yandros_iexplore.dmp, Yandros_iexplore(2).dmp and Yandros_iexplore(3).dmp

Let me know if you didn't get them.

This is a specific (known) compatibility issue with Sun VirtualBox. There's currently no plan to solve it, sorry (it's not that easy, and probably not worth it).
Thanks.
It's there all the time...

yeah there's a new button on the alert window redirecting to that page...not really useful so far as it doesn't bring any specific info about the malware you encountered. Just test that with EICAR...this avast page would display the same for anything...so far, so that's work in progress I suppose.

With avast! 5.0.545 the AvastSvc.exe shows an Average of 15MB

Avast 5.0.590 installed and running.
The problem seems solved Behavior Shield.
The system seems faster.
However, it is only recently that the update was installed.
I continue to test.
Thanks, Avast Team.

I'm Having now the same issue of Cadremis seems like a Bug in the UI that sometimes shows half text of the options.

I solved it Right now with a Reboot...

The weird thing is:
1) I installed avast!
2) Rebooted (and all fine in the UI)
3) After 3 hours appears only half text of some parts of the avast UI (the issue of Cadremis)
4) Rebooted again and the problem is gone...  ::)

Post by: igor on June 27, 2010, 10:59:24 AM
Well, you can post them here (or in a different thread), but...
1. the encoding is simply wrong in the current build, so anything connected with it isn't necessary to report
2. the translation is still incomplete (roughly corresponds to the state of avast! 5 in January); it's being updated, but it probably won't be finished until this buils is released. Before the update is done, however, the project is "locked" (synchronization reasons)... so I can't really fix the reported problems anyway at the moment.

So... I'd probably suggest to wait until the next program update  :-\

And new in v5.0.590:
- solved intermittent hangs during full scan
- added more logging in the service (should be useful to debug potential service crash issues)
- added Romanian language pack (still incomplete)

Nice to hear that you added Romanian language pack. Please let us know if you need help to finish romanian translation.

Network Lock is in the Summary section of Avast! Internet Security UI, right when it is first opened,
directly below the "Silent Gaming Mode" control.
