Title: NEW OFFICIAL Program Update Now Available [5.0.594]
Post by: Vlk on June 29, 2010, 12:38:53 AM
Hi all,

it's my pleasure to announce the general availability of a new avast program update, version number 5.0.594.

Here's the list of most important changes:
- improved interaction with Windows System Restore; namely, avast now auto-repairs itself when it detects a corrupted VPS due to a System Restore (or other reasons)
- aswSP.sys: solved a minor stability issue
- solved a problem related to inserting of the license files
- added the activation code feature
- solved a problem when avast was progressively slowing down (especially in conjunction with the screensaver)
- performance improvements in the Behavior Shield
- avast Screen saver now accessible even in 64-bit Windows Vista
- stability improvement in aswTdi.sys (solved a compatibility problem with AVG)
- IS firewall: solved a potential BSOD condition
- various improvements in the avast! sandbox module
- minor fixes in the GUI
- added Catalan and Belarusian language packs

Users of any previous version of avast 5.x can go to this build by simply invoking the program update feature from within the program UI.
Please allow ~24 hours for download.com (our main distribution partner in English speaking countries) to update their servers with this new version.

Thanks
Vlk

Two observations:

For what reason are the options removed to change particular settings under the predefine scans >:( Or is this the way how Avast plans to implement restoring the default settings.
When are you gone change the GUI glitch about the ZOO archive >:(

It has been always like this.
The reason is that if somebody writes here (or on tech support) that he's running a "Full system scan" (for example), we can be sure what settings are used.
You can always create your own scan, right?

When are you gone change the GUI glitch about the ZOO archive >:(

In the next program update. It's not such a critical error that it would deserve another program update itself... it can wait until the next update (even a few months).

Smooth program update to v5.0.094. I did do two reboots, but most likely due to my permissions needed updating for the firewall for the avast! newer version. First reboot - my icon was not showing in the task bar as being loaded, so I did another reboot and everything "a-ok".

Great job done by the Avast Team. Your amazing knowledge is the best and makes for a superior product.

Updated to 5.0.584 without any issues.

Thanks to all the members of the Alwil team who work so hard in helping to keep our PCs safe from infections.  :)

I noticed that 'AvastSvc.exe' file is much larger in this latest version. Last version was 27,204K.  .594 version is almost 50meg (49,876K). That's a pretty big jump in size.

<<< edit >>>

I now see that the memory usage actually goes DOWN after awhile.  After my PC has been running for awhile, 'AvastSvc.exe' is only using 25,554 ... with a peak use of 40,792. So actually ends up using LESS!  :o

In quick scan settings in the Scan section look the types of files. There are extension and such thing then just down there are a delete button and its very weird its like take a little space when there are like alot space. I hope you understand what i mean...

It isn't weird. It allows for the deletion of a a manually added file type in that section

Take a look at in the Custom scan context, where you would be able to actually add a file type to the default list. Having added it in the (select additional areas) field, which when clicked you can enter data. If you no longer want that to be scanned or you added it in error, you have to have an option to delete the entry. That is what the Delete button is for.

In that window there is room for more entries (using the add button) for each subsequent entry I guess there would be a corresponding delete button.

Nothing weird really.

The same thing is that the scroll won't work as there are no editable options that you would first have to select the Scan all files to get into that area. The Quick and Full System scans are display only on editable option in the Scan section.

After updating to Avast Pro 5.0.594 (with Vista 64 bit OS), I am unable to get to the Internet with Avast turned on. Is anyone experiencing this issue besides me? It sounds like some feature needs to be toggled on?

For me, also with Vista x64, the update has broken something.  I cannot boot at all, except for safe mode.

Anyone else?

Anyone got a good way to fix it?

Thanks.

Neil

I tried "changing" using the Avast! control panel in safe mode.  (Actually I changed none of the selections for the protection types nor the languages).  After the "change" process finished, the computer started working fine again.

Now it is still version 5.0.594, but working correctly.

Hi Tech,

I uploaded 3 iexplore.dmp files (one per tab I guess) a few days ago from build 590.  Not heard anything since though.

A few people reported this problem with sandbox and IE32 with the last release version, but so far I think I'm the only one to report that it still hasn't been fixed for me.

Seems under Windows 7 Professional 64-bit, I still cannot do an in-place upgrade with Avast Internet Security. I have to either uninstall the current version and then install the newest version, or else boot into safe mode, go to the Programs section in Control Panel and tell it to Update from there. I can't do upgrades from within Avast's update tab (except for virus definitions). Any updates to the actual program cause the update to fail. The main reason is the same that's been going on for months with every other prior version: the SETUP.LOG file shows that the following:

23:27:45 nrm/fil  File C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast5\Setup\setup.ovr not writable. Error 0x00000020
23:27:45 min/gen  setif: same as previous

23:27:48 vrb/fil  NeedReboot=false
23:27:48 min/gen  Return code: 0x20000010 [New setup available.]
23:27:48 min/gen  Stopped: 07.05.2010, 23:27:48

I cannot find why this file is locked, but it prevents the in-place upgrade within the Avast program from working. As stated, I have to uninstall the program or else, boot into safe mode and update it that way.

Getting kind of annoying.

Hi, I have used avast for many years and I love this anti-virus. Good job on a great product. I have used both versions, one for windows, and one for Linux. I am running Ubuntu 10(Linux) at the moment and there are two issues that I have:
1: the default Linux kernel is too small for avast, and when you type the registration code in then update avast has issues. When you restart avast it goes back to the register prompt again and it wont register it( fixed this with a script to make the Linux kernel bigger at start up of the OS, works like a charm now).

2:There is no real-time scanner for Linux. I understand that in Linux, many consider an anti-virus an unnecessary formality, so it really doesn't need one and that there are complications with "root". I beg to differ, and maybe a real-time scanner might be a bit much or really complicated, but a browser plug-in to scan downloads or possibly act as a real-time scanner would be excellent since Linux is still able to download a virus. Plus if this plug-in is in the list of plug-ins for a browser (example Firefox or chrome) in Linux, that is free advertising because there is none.

Sorry to post this here but I didn't know if the other thread was still being read, I hope this isn't annoying.

not a fan of the greying out of the scan options... as the updates continue for avast v5, the less i seem to like it... avast v5 seems to be all about taking control away from the user, making it idiot proof and against more advanced users, not even giving a choice for what the user wants to do with it. if updates continue like this, ill most likely be ditching avast pretty soon... >:(

Well I assume you would rather have it as it was before in avast 5, those settings weren't even displayed, so the user doesn't have a clue what is actually being done in those pre-defined scans ?

If they don't know is being scanned in these pre-defined scans then how could they know if they need to scan more areas/files and which to choose, from those that are available in the Custom scan section.

It isn't taking control away or they wouldn't give you the option of running a custom scan, you set it up for your needs, give it a name of your choice and save the scan settings. You can run that instead of the pre-defined scans, so it allows for the experienced user to do what scan they want.

Hi firzen771 :)

I think the problem is that we already knew those settings from the custom scans. Seeing them now greyed out in the pre-defined scans make us wonder why they are greyed out, not realizing that they where not even there before ;)

ye i know i can create a custom scan, im just a bit OCD with these kinda things tho lol and like things to stay neat and clear and creating custom scans irritates me, it wuld be pretty easy to just allow me to choose sensitivity level and such on the default scans, i dont see the downside to allowing those options :/ not like regular users will go rummaging thru settings deep in the interface.

While avast does not have a "reset to default settings" option, I would let the default scanning like they are. Otherwise, users will never understand the help files, compare avast with other antivirus (the comparisons are generally made by "default" settings), etc.

You can try manually, disabling the self defense module of avast (Troubleshooting tab of settings) and going to the C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast5\Setup\ folder (or C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Alwil Software\Avast5\Log\).

Not to mention that letting the users mess with the settings of the default scans would exponentially increase the difficulty in troubleshooting problems with them. It would create a nightmare for the developers. If you want different settings, you have the ability to create them in a custom scan.

well following that same logic, wuldnt that create hell for devs with anyone using a custom scan? so shuld they take away even that? lol... ive yet to see anyone in my everyday life say how they went thru their AV's settings fooling around with everything, most people leave it as is and never look at their AV again, so really it just hinders the people that want this ability (like me)

Not really since the developers could tell the person to run a default scan and see if that works okay. Then if it does, some potential causes would be eliminated and they can get down to asking what the settings of the custom scan were that differ from the defaults. With the old version, the default settings did not show so the user would not know what they did that was different.

If the problem was with the default scan then they would know what to check without even having to ask. If the user was able to change those defaults, then that would create more problems.

The real point is that they didn't take anything away. You never could change the settings for the default scans and didn't even have a way to know what they were.

Since installing Internet Security I've experienced a big slow down in my internet speed.

I recently performed a clean install of Windows 7 (Home Premium) on my PC. I made no changes to the security settings in Win7 (Defender, Firewall, Malicious Tools). I tested the speed at 56Mbps (no applications installed other than what was installed from the installation disk). I then installed Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware application. I retested and got 56Mbps. I then installed Avast Internet Security. I made no changes to any of the settings in AIS and my internet speed dropped to 18Mbps. What changes can I make to get my speed up to 56Mbps? Should I turn off Windows security settings or adjust them to make them more compatible with AIS? Thanks

(PS. I have not installed an email client yet - still looking for something smaller than MS Outlook.)

Check your system date, day/month/year and adjust as required.

If that doesn't resolve it - Please start a New Topic of your own as this seems unrelated to the original subject and will just confuse the topic and we will try to help.

Check your system date, day/month/year and adjust as required.

If that doesn't resolve it - Please start a New Topic of your own as this seems unrelated to the original subject and will just confuse the topic and we will try to help.

Are you in the avast! Free/Pro/Suite forum home page showing a list of all the topics in date order ?

If not follow the instructions to get there. Once there, there is a new topic button on that page.

Did you expand my image, click on it ?

I have recently (5/8/10) installed ver 5.0.594 Pro on my home office machines which are linked in a workgroup and my desktop machine uses my laptop as the server.  Since updating I am getting "General reading errors on drive M:" when my accounts software goes to copy (and rename) files in my desktop user profile prior to launching MS Word.

Desktop is Vista and the laptop is XP.

Any suggestions welcome as I am pretty sure it is NOT the accounts software which worked perfectly before the upgrade and Avast is the only new program installed.

Hi Susan,

I doubt that the upgrade to the newest vers of avast could be causing your drive read errors.

Have you tried turning off (temporarily) avast shields and try reading your 'M' drive again?

Try your 'M' drive again.

Hi Susan,

I doubt that the upgrade to the newest vers of avast could be causing your drive read errors.

Have you tried turning off (temporarily) avast shields and try reading your 'M' drive again?

  • Right click on avast icon on sys tray
  • then click on 'avast shields control'
  • Then 'disable for 10 minutes

Try your 'M' drive again.

Tried by switching off all shields on both computers. Still fails.

Thanks, at least I have proved to myself that it is NOT Avast causing the problem so it is now back to the accounts programmer to tell him just that!

Incidentally I have been using Avast for a considerable number of years and have always trusted it.

another big problem with AVAST5:
AVAST scan all JPG files; if disable AVAST; AVAST scan allways JPG files!!!
very big problem, can't disable this scan! if exclude folder, not work... problem sended to french AVAST support but :(

I use SyncToy to make backup (sync with echo) of all jpg files!!
With AVAST after 1 hours, not finish, and use more CPU! (same with Avast disabled, in monitor, can see all files scanned, and counter file scanned increase!!)
With Microsoft Essential, less than 5 minutes!

Title: Problem with Real Time Protection on Free Version
Post by: JeffA on August 19, 2010, 02:01:47 AM
I am running the new version on a laptop with a wireless Internet connection.

On start up, I have to enter the dashboard and click FIX because real time protection has not started up. While online, real time protection drops regularly.

I joked with a friend about this being a new feature designed to encourage users to buy the pay product but this is no joke
