Searched for an answer to this but could'nt find anything.
I recieved the pop-up to update to the latest Avast program and find that I can't.
When ever I try I get "the system cannot open the device or file specified" splash screen from Avast.
I'm running Windows 7 32bit.
Any advice?

Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).
If it fails, I suggest an installation from scratch:
1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html) and save it.
2. Download the latest avast! (http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.html) version and save it.
3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode (http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml) and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode (http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml) and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you've run it.
5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
6. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
7. Check and post the results.

Thanks for the reply's.
To answer Asyn first, I using Ultimate.
Now back to Tech's reply.
I tried CP/Add/Remove/Repair but that did'nt work but I noticed I had the option to upgrade that did install Avast, it then asked for a restart which I confirmed.
PC then booted to POST screen, then started to load Windows 7.
Here comes the kicker.
It Black screened on me.
After a few re-boots PC loads Windows 7 (can here start sound) but I have no video through either my PCI/embedded cards ??!!??!!
Managed get video in Safe Mode with networking so will try complete uninstall/re-install.

I am basically having the same problem. I am using Vista 32-bit. Received a pop-up this morning asking me to update to the new version of the software. I did so and did the required reboot. On reboot after logging in to windows I get a black screen. In safe mode I was able to restore back to a previous restore point. And now I can boot and everything looks fine. EXCEPT avast! now refuses to run. I get the red x on the tray icon. When I click on the icon I can see that the software is not running. The message says there is a conflict issue or the software is not running. When I try to start it there is no response.
I am using avast! pro and it has been running perfectly fine for months.

I don't know much about MS OneCare, but if there is an uninstall utility available for it, better run it.
Use this in safe mode: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility
Reinstall avast after that.
Report back.

I already uninstalled OneCare loooong ago.

I uninstalled with utility/rebooted, still no graphics card. Deleted /uninsalled graphics card.
Installed latest version of Avast and re-installed Graphics card and drivers.
Avast works but i still get screen signal loss after the Windows 7 boot screen but before the password screen is displayed.
Me thinks this could be a serious problem.
-
certainly doesn't give me much confidence in trying to uninstall/re-install. Maybe I should just switch to the free MS software instead.

Could be.
Please run free Mbam, if possible..! (In safe mode, if needed)

Ran Mbam quick scan, nothing found.
Will do a full scan and report back.
Oh, System Restore has'nt done anything either.
-
Not sure how you uninstalled OneCare, but if only via Windows Add/Remove Programs, you might want to run the OneCare removal utility I saw on the MSE forums. This would perhaps preclude any remnants may be causing your unsuccessful update problems. It's #10 on the list here:

Morning all.
I ran a full scan in safe mode and nothing was found by Mbam.
On a side note, I forced windows 7 in to repair mode and after several minutes it came back that there was a problem with the filing system that it could'nt repair and suggested to use System Restore which I did.
After a few more minutes it gave a report saying that it was unable to fix the problem and to sent a report to MS.
Looks like I might have to re-install my OS.

Finally found the problem.
VGA controller has been corrupted somehow.
Reinstall it is.
