Title: avast! needs to restart your operating system?????

I recently installed avast Home and it keeps saying that "avast! needs to restart your operating system.  Do you want to do it now?".  I reboot and a short time later I get the same message again.  This has been going on for several days now.  Does anyone know why this happens.  I have certainly seen antivirus programs require a reboot when processing updates, but I don't expect to reboot so many times on so many days.

Does anyone know what is going on?  Is this normal with avast?

Avast needs only one reboot when installing. Constantly rebooting can mean several things

1) Something went wrong during the installation. Remove Avast, reboot and try again. Make sure the installer isn't corrupted. Download Avast again in another folder and compare the two installers.

2) A application is interfering with Avast. Remove all applications from the startup list using msconfig or startup.cpl, reboot and try again.

3) There is something wrong with your operating system (registry?). Try a in-place repair of the OS.

There may ofcourse be other reasons, but these come up in my mind.

Installation of avast was normal and it seems to running normally other than this restart issue.  No errors.  The operating system was just installed after formatting the drive and there were no errors during that install.  The only software I have installed other than avast is Microsoft Office.

I'm not sure where that leaves me but at least you have confirmed that this is not normal.  Thanks

Your system may already be infected. You went on the net without a firewall and av software. I suggest you go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and get ALL security patches/updates.

If you have XP, enable the build in firewall for now. (replace it later by a better one)

Run a online scan for virusses.

Did you have another AV program on your computer before you installed  Avast! ?
