I have been an Avast Free user for a very long time. So I am feeling stupid to even have to post this question:
Where is the firewall settings in the Avast interface???
I have searched this forum for firewall, AIS(found when searching or firewall) etc. with lots of results, none of which helped me find my firewall.
I am trying to determine if Avast is blocking Filezilla and a way to allow it. My interface has nothing that I can find to do so.

there's no firewall in the "free" edition.

Thanks Logos, I feel less stupid...well at least about no being able to find it.
Moreso because the entire problem was because Filezilla's network connection tester has nothing to do with being able to upload to an ftp site, only if you want to run an ftp server.
Filezilla instructions seem a bit murky regarding this (for a total newbie to go to their download page they would not know whether to get the client or the server). At least I got the client, but then setting up the connection instructions seem to skip over the client and go right to the server.
Once I finally figured that out it was a breeze.

By default you are using the built in Windows firewall.
It's inbound protection only. It's recommended to use
a software firewall with inbound & outbound protection.
I recommend the free ZoneAlarm firewall. It's the easiest,
most user-friendly software firewall. ;)

If you aren't using XP, Vista or Windows 7, then my
recommendation may not stand.
It would be a good idea to put your operating system
(XP, Vista, 7...) & security (avast! 4.8 or avast! 5?)
set up in your signature in case you ever need help again,

He is not allowed to do this until he has 20 posts per antispam rules of the forum. He will have to manually type his signature in his posts in the meantime. But this will help us help you in the future.
You can also do a search on the forum re: third-party firewalls that are compatible with Avast if you like. There are free ones available and you can often trial them, but you definitely want something that offers 2-way protection.

Such a placebo firewall is definitely not to be recommended!
Why?
• It's running as a program and for this not strong enough.
• A virus shield is to stop critical software be transferred to ›this‹ PC, not a FW!
• What do you think do hackers have to do all the time? Attack you and me here at home or in office to waste energy to steal useless things??? So the is no attack to be feared.
• When it alerts outgoing WWW traffic, the SW which does this is already here and active. So everything is too late at all… (Or you did not read any manuals, this SW XYZ usually connects to Internet for any reason.)
Summary:
Such a FW is simply useless.
It consumes resources, wastes your time for training and control/settings, frickles too deep within OS.
No one needs such a software.

Everyone has their own opinion as to what works best for their system and set-up. Perhaps a NAT router is best for one and not another. Some people do not know what a NAT router is and therefore prefer a Windows Firewall or a third-party firewall, however the XP firewall is not sufficient protection.
There are other steps to take besides using a firewall, such as proper antivirus (Avast), layering your security software defense, using a safe browser which prohibits scripting, and common sense just to mention a few.
But it is up to each individual to decide what is best for them.

ZoneAlarm Free & Pro are the only firewalls I can recommend in good conscience.
It's Comodo fw that should be avoided more than all other fw's.
I do hope this wont become another Comodo thread. ::)
I especially hope it wont turn into another fw fight. :(

I don't recommend ZoneAlarm beacause it conflicts with Avast, as far as I know. I remember reading threads about this.
Btw, I'm not saying that ZoneAlarm is a bad firewall program.

I've been a ZA user since 2002, never had a conflict with avast!.
There was an issue between ZA Pro's privacy component and avast,
but that's not an issue anymore.
It never affected ZA Free as ZA Free never had the privacy component.
In between 2002 & now I've tried lots of different fw's, but always returned to ZA. ;D
P. S. In the older ZA Pro the privacy component could be turned off.
Just as avast! 4 evolved to 5, ZA evolved, also. ;)

I gave a shot to the latest version, the whole interface is a real shame ::) ...but never mind, we've been there before.
