Hi,
I'm about to get a notebook of a friend for repair. As it seems, there are lots of virus within a thunderbird mail archive/profile. Is avast able to scan an clean that archive, and what would be the best way to do that? I just want to save stuff from that machine and then do a fresh install, but he wants to keep those mails...

The simplest idea is usually the best one: ignore that, leave it within the mails.
• First, the alert may be a mishap. TB compresses the mails data, and this my cause a string matching to a virus' signature.
• Second, the mail-archive-file of course can not be repaired or deleted.
• Third, if you really want to erase an existing virus (malware) within, you only can open TB and check each single mail if it looks suspicious and maybe delete it (and the trash bin, too).
• If Avast detects a virus (signature) and there is a virus - running such a reliable virus shield [shield!], what may happen when you pick an infected older (..!) mail or save an infected attachment? You are prepared this can / may / will happen and you now simply found out what's on to delete in either in TB and where you saved something.
