Title: won't install
Post by: BawdaBingg on July 29, 2004, 02:50:42 PM
??? I have downloaded Avast 4 Home edition twice now....from different locations.  When I execute the file to install it, it runs for 2 seconds and then I get the following:  'An error 1006 (000003EE) has occured.  Last performed operation was: opening the self-extracting archive'.  Does anyone know what that means and how I can correct it.  I've heard so much about avast and I'm anxious to try it!

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Please provide more details. We can help with a lot of things, but we still haven't mastered the skill of mindreading :D

What windows version?
Do you have any other problems?
Did you closed all running applications while trying to install?
Are there services shutdown?
Are there errors in the event log and/or the system log?
Are there errors in the Avast setup log?

BawdaBingg, can you try to download the setup file again and test? Maybe you get a corrupted install file  ;)

Wellcome to forums  :D

Be sure to empty your Windows temporary folder (C:\Windows\Temp) and your local one (C:\Documents and Settings\ ... \Local Configuration\Temp).

To delete the temporary Internet files, go to Internet explorer >Tools > Internet options > Delete files > Click delete all offline content (just to be sure) > click ok.
It might take some time to delete them.

I had the same problem in a new installation on
P4 3.0 HT
512 Gb DDR 400 memory
80 Gb western digital sata
asus p4p800 mx
windows xp sp2

Seems weird but works for me:

In windows security center -> antivirus

Check the box - I have an antivirus program that I'll monitor myself bla bla bla...

and try to install.

It's a good workaround... I never test it but as you're saying it works.
