I thought I did sorry..Running OS 98..I used to get the new auto updates all the time..But I don't know what happened..It's checked in the program as being auto..So to get the new updates I have to use the repair tool. Can this be fixed or what..Please help.Also to mention that I uninstalled Avast and tried downloading and reinstalling..It worked fine for a couple of days and now it will not do auto updates..

how do you know that?What was your last virus definition file(VPS)?

What happens when you invoke the update manually? (e.g. by selecting "Update" from the tray icon popup menu) - does it give any error?

No there's no error message at all  will update that way.
