Title: Windows 7 x64 + avast 5 free = BSOD
Post by: kendall15 on August 15, 2010, 12:05:11 AM
So I installed avast 5 free to a a new install of windows 7 x64 and I got random BSOD. I uninstalled then reinstalled and the same thing happened again. Then I used the uninstall tool and reinstalled with no luck. I have a kernel dump and a mini dump, all I need it a place to upload if you all would like then.

Thank you for any help.

Thanks, I uploaded as "mini dump + kernel.7z". Tell me if you need more information or have a way to fix this problem.

Thank you all.

Not really, I have Sypbot without teatimer, I do believe I disabled windows defender. Anything you would suggest or know of anything that could cause this? This started a while ago and I have been dealing with it, even reinstalled win 7. At one point I even almost thought it was a hardware problem but WinPe, windows 7 install and ubuntu have had no problems at all on this same machine. Then when I uninstalled avast the problem stopped, reinstall and it started again..

Spybot could be the problem...!

I don't see how that could cause it nor have I heard of spybot ever causing problems. I only use to patch Firefox and block host in the host file. No tea timer, no scans, nada. But I will try that in hope of fixing this.

Well, I had a look at the dump and I have to say it's pretty confusing... I just can't find any connection with avast whatsoever. :-[

The system obviously crashed inside the Windows cache manager but that's pretty much all I could mine from the dump.
Could you please try running a memory (RAM) diagnostics tool - ideally overnight, to make sure that it's not a faulty RAM? (Cache manager related crashes are often caused by faulty memory modules).

Of course, I'm not saying the problem is not caused by avast - it's just that the dump file doesn't indicate so...

Thanks
Vlk

Any particular program you would suggest to test the RAM?

That's what I went with, figured I would just ask for second opinions. As far as the memory goes, it's got a bad stick. Good thing it's got a lifetime warranty. When it all started I tested the memory because it was so random but it didn't fail then. Did the test earlier to night and it failed with in 5 minutes. lol I guess it never failed in any other OS because it was a high address on the second stick and it just never needed that much memory in any other OS. So I guess uninstalling avast just irritated it less because it used less memory.

Thank you everyone.
