wait I dont get it
someone thinks avast 5 can be worse than avast 4? I haven't seen latest version of anything which is worse than previous version yet...

WindowsME and Windows Vista come to mind ;D

WindowsME and Windows Vista come to mind ;D
for WinME yes, but for Vista not really no ::)
-
There are many XP users that would give you an argument on if vista was better than XP ;D
After how many years of release, Vista (gold) just never flew (excuse the pun) even after 2 SPs is it what many hoped for on the gold release. After only 1 year Win7 has overtaken Vista's total market share, but that still pales when compared with the 61% share that XP has.
Me I avoided Vista and so far win7 also, as my system isn't ready for an update, by then perhaps I will be looking at win8 ;D
-
we're getting off topic here but okay, Vista ran perfectly on my computer...I never gave a damn about what the XP herds were saying, as it had nothing to do with what I was seeing. Not mentioning that thousands of Vista bashers never tried Vista, they were just following a trend, stupidly repeating what they heard ::)
Others were complaining about driver issues, memory issues...I was running Vista on a late 2002 computer, just had to upgrade it from 512 MB to 1GB of RAM and it just flew, graphics, sound, network, everything was working perfectly.
...oh on a side note, "Seven" is "Vista"...call it a service pack 3 or second edition, improved and optimized, but it's Vista ;)
-
ah yeah DavidR you are right about vista - I switched from it to XP after using it for a while
-
...yeah, XP is sooooooooooooooo.... coooooooooooooooooooooooool :D :D :D heard they were extending support until 2050, too bad some might not live long enough to benefit from the "full XP'rience" ::)

Well, if they really would support XP until 2050, it would probably be the first halfway secure windows OS out there, as even MS should be able to fix all bugs in that period of time... ;D

halfway secure
halfway secure? windows? no way as long as its the most popular OS

oh yeah, the avast4 siren ;D

Another positive for Avast 5 is it's GUI, which is much better than 4 IMO. And I agree with that scary 4.0 siren!!!

I have Avast 5 on both Windows 7 machines and it works great. On one I installed it new, and on the other I updated from 4.8. I never updated from 4.8 on my XP desktop because of the problems that I had read about on this forum. Have all the problems been fixed? I would really like to put it on this machine too.

For XP, I would recommend doing a clean install from 4.8 to 5.0.594. This seems to have resolved the issues you have heard about.
1. Save a copy of newest version of Avast (5.0.594) for the version you need and save it to your HDD:
Free – http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe (http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe)
Pro – http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_pro.exe (http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_pro.exe)
AIS – http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_ais.exe (http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_ais.exe)
2. Download the Avast Uninstall Utility, aswClear5.exe http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility) and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 4.0 and 5.0).
3. Disconnect from the Internet at this time.
4. Uninstall Avast through "Add/Remove Programs" through Control Panel.
5. Boot into Safe Mode (http://Safe Mode) (hit F8 repeatedly) and run the Avast Uninstall Tool.
6. Reboot twice.
7. Clean your computer up (clean up cache, temporary Internet files, etc.).
8. Install the newest version of Avast and reboot.
9. Get Internet access and update Avast definitions.
10. Register your copy or add the license key for Free, Pro, or AIS.
Let us know how this works out for you. :)

Thanks for all the instructions. I had hoped there would be an easier way, but I guess not. I will do that soon.

I just put the details in there, but it's really simple. By doing the clean install, you will avoid any headaches later.

I concur with SafeSurf.
I keep Windows Defender updated daily on my Windows 7 system and let it run a Quick scan daily as well.

Latest definition version: 1.89.118.0

Personally I never bothered with all that faffing about and followed the avast recommendation action to install avast5 over avast 4.8 on my XP Pro SP3 system (on a much earlier build) and I had no problems at all. Some people had problems, but not everyone or the 'support' forums would have been flooded.
So I would proceed with an install over the top and only if you experience a problem should you have to consider a clean reinstall.

Thank you both.
Maybe I will do the regular install and then if I have problems, I can follow Safesurf's instructions. As it is now I have downloaded both Avast 5 and the Avast Uninstall utility, so I am ready one way or the other.
Thanks again.

Let us know how it goes. I'm sure you will be happier with 5.0. :)

HI Roro -
I have also installed V5 over V4.8 and have had no problems at all even after 15 over-installs by now. Originally, I did 12 just after the release of V5 but 3 family members have recently had me update 3 more laptops while here for a visit.
Try the over-install as it is quicker and easier. If that fails, you can always follow SafeSurf's suggested way.

Yes, my policy is not to take an action which is designed to overcome a problem until that problem exists.

Avast 5 is installed and seems to be working fine. I did it the easy way, and just ran the free 5 installation exe file. It shut down and deleted Avast 4.8 and installed Avast 5.

The easy way is often the best way ;D

I hope you update your signature and I hope you keep Windows Defender updated on your Windows 7 system and is it 32bit or 64bit ???
From Windows Defender portal:
Latest definition version: 1.89.175.0

Thanks YoKenny. I tend to forget to update the signature, so I just did that.
My Windows Defender updates itself on the windows 7 machine. It is 32 bit.

I'm glad it all worked fine for you Roro. :)

@ roro
Go to Start on your Windows 7 system then enter Windows Defender then you will see its current definitions and update level and you can set its Quick scan timing.
I have mine set for once per day at 7:00 AM and current is:
Client Version: 6.1.7600.16385
Engine Version: 1.1.6103.0
Antispyware definitions: 1.89.207.0
