Title: [Resolved] Windows 7 alert: No virus protection
Post by: chrissmit on August 28, 2010, 10:31:31 AM
Dear all,

Just upgraded to the Free version of Avast 5.0.594
After having done 2 system reboots, Windows 7 tells me I have no virus protection.
Avast 5 tells me my system is fully secured.

What's the problem here, and how to fix it?

thx
Chris

Welcome to the forum chrissmit.  :)

Try a cold boot.  If you still have the problem, go into your Security Center and check to make sure your Antivirus (AV) is being recognized.

Let us know how it goes.

Hi all,

thx for the quick reply. Even on a Saturday  ;D

What's a cold boot?
A shut down, and then start-up as opposed to a "restart"?

And this sounds really stupid: where do I find my "Security Center"?

I'll keep you posted

thx
Chris

Yes.

Start > Control Panel > Security Center

Are you on your machine as Administrative User?

I don't have Win7, so maybe someone else here can help out.  You might try the Administrative Tools and see if it is there.  Otherwise I will try and get someone to assist.

Action Center replaces Windows Security Center in Win7.

Action Center manages firewall settings, Windows Update, anti-spyware software settings, Internet security, and User Account control settings. Action Center also monitors computer maintenance settings and provides links to trouble-shooting and other tools that can help fix problems.

To find the Action Center:  click the Start button, click Control Panel, and then under System and Security, click Review your computer's status.

Check to see if Avast is being recognized as your antivirus (AV) in the Action Center.  Thank you.

SafeSurf is correct in that Action Center replaces Windows Security Center in Windows 7.

Hi all

Found the Action Center.
Its there where I get the error message of not having anti virus protection.
Windows 7 gives me an option to go online to get anti virus protection. When I do so, I see Avast as one of the MS partners.

I've also disabled and enabled Avast so possibly Windows would recognize Avast. But no cigar.

Any  other help would be welcome.

Thx

Chris

I suggest an installation from scratch:

1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html) and save it.
2. Download the latest avast! (http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.html) version and save it.
3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode (http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml) and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode (http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml) and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you've run it.
5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
6. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
7. Check and post the results.

Or, Windows Security Center or Action stop recognizing your antivirus or firewall... Check your system time and date and also http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=23457.msg193534#msg193534

Hi all,

Think I got it soleved.

I uninstalled Avast 4.8 in Windows 7 normal operation mode (not safe mode), restarted, and re-installed Avast 5 under normal operation mode (not safe mode).

The warning is gone now, and W7 reports the same thing. Avist is up to date, and my system is secured.

Thx all for the help!
