Title: Annoying Popups
Post by: mph on August 30, 2010, 10:53:43 AM
I'm getting annoying popups from Avast asking me for money.
How can I stop this?
Is this malicious?

Can you give me a screen shot of this pop-up?
What version of Avast do you have?  4.0 or 5.0?  5.0.594 is the latest version
What product to you have?  Free, Pro, or AIS

I'm using 4.8 Free.
It looks like other users are also experiencing this issue: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=61063.0

So did that previous post answer your question as to why you are getting the pop-up?  It is because you are using an outdated version of Avast (4.0) that will be discontinued shortly after the end of this year, and Avast is encouraging users to upgrade to the newer version (for free) of 5.0.594.  You have the option, if you read carefully, of going with Free, Pro or AIS (the last two being paid versions.  But no one is forcing you do do this.  You still have the choice of staying with Free if you want Free.  You will continue to get the frequent pop-up's until you actually do the upgrade or a clean install.

The popup could definitely be a little less "sales-pitch-y", but to be fair to Avast, they do need to advertise the paid product. Man can not live by empty electrons alone.

To the nuts and bolts of it.
Support for 4.8 will end around the end of the year, in all likelihood. So prior to that happening, you need to update your free version. Or purchase the updated pro or security suite version, if you wish to. Or migrate to a different AV.

Of those three options, I chose to update my free version to the latest, and its' working like a honey. I suggest you do the same. Follow the prompts to update to the latest free version.

Most users don't have tech problems in doing this, but occasionally some do, and in those cases, a full removal, restart, a running of the Uninstall Utility (http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility), restart, and re-installation of the new version usually fixes any problems.

Any removal/installation of an antivirus is best done offline, as the computer is unprotected during the time the AV is removed.

Thanks for the quick responses all!
I was worried it might've been something malicious, but it looks like it comes from Avast.
I'll update my avast when I next see the popup.

Thanks again :)

No trouble at all.
Any problems/questions, post back to this thread would probably be best, unless the problem appears unrelated.
I don't expect there'll be problems. ;)

Would be best practice to download new 5.0.594 and save, then download avast removal tool and save, then remove 4.8 via add remove programs and reboot, run the removal tool to clear all remaining avast left overs then reboot again and then your all clear to install new version  :)
