Thanks Vlk, updating now which shouldn't be as painful downloading the full program on dial-up.

Program update finished only 3 minutes on dial-up great, just need to reboot now.

Until you mentioned it I hadn't noticed it, so that is how intrusive it is (NOT).

Even so it is a small inconvenience for the free product version, its not like its an in your face advert, etc. etc.

You don't need one if you have avast 5.0.594 already installed, just use the manual Program Update in the avastUI.

The download links are always the same (always host the latest version).

E.g. in case of the Free AV, it's here: http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download#tab4 (I mean the list of individual language versions -- may be below the fold so you may need to scroll down little bit).

Thanks

Use the "multi-lingual" package, that's a direct download from our site.
For avast Pro AV, it's here: http://www.avast.com/pro-antivirus#tab4

Pleased to report that (after a firewall component uninstall and reinstall) the long filename/short filename problem appears resolved in 5.0.677. Starts via both filename versions of an application (I tried on wksss.exe) are now blocked from outbound connection by the same rule.

Thanks

minor bug, noticing it now but was probably there before. I had to switch to "public zone", explaining why I now have blocked entries in the log. As said the bug is minor, when keeping moving the vertical scroll cursor, once it has reached one end of the list, the list keeps moving strangely ;D

Is it possible for one to hide the button on the top that says Upgrade?

Oh yes, please! ;)

Can anybody tell write me, what this new feature
Quote
- added trimming of setup.log ...
exactly means?
I think, it should solve the problem that the "setup.log" grows up more and more and more, but I don't find any point in the program-settings.
Or does the programm this automatically? ???

Kind regards

Its called the price of a free product, a gentle nudge towards Upgrading and is certainly more subtle than many such free products.

My guess is limiting its growth potential, restricting it to either a file size or number of days records retained. I believe it would be part of avast's internal housekeeping so no option required in the settings.

Yes. Memory leak fixed.
New "settings" would be the correct word. Check the "Advanced settings" of the firewall.

Avira (just for example) is more horrible in this point...

Thank you, David!
That's a good explanation - and nothing more to do for me ;D, because there's no option required in the settings.

PS: 5.0.677 seems working good for me with W2000 Pro! :D

Kind regards

@mag:

Actually, this hasn't been fixed yet -- could you please tell me how did you test it?
Did you execute wksss.exe with short path? [e.g. did you type "c:\progra~1\wksss.exe" in cmd.exe?]

I think the outcome depends fully on the application which is used for wksss.exe execution.

Title: Re: New *release* build of avast now available (5.0.677)
Post by: MAG on September 08, 2010, 08:11:49 PM
@pk

This is what happened with 5.0.594:

Default Rules set to Auto-decide.
Application Rule for Works spreadsheet set to Block all connections.
Open Works spreadsheet - Application Rule reverts to Friends in/Internet out - Works connect to internet.

This is what happens now on 5.0.677:

Default Rules set to Auto-decide.
Application Rule for Works set to Block all connections.
Open Works spreadsheet from start menu - connection to internet is blocked.
Open works spreadsheet by opening an existing file - connection to internet is blocked.

The two different ways of opening the program use different forms of the filename (as the screendump from the firewall log shows).
That, plus the fact that the problem has gone away, led me (wrongly it seems) to think that the problem had been fixed.

I hope it can be resolved. It's the only remainin gbug that I seem to have in AIS (and also it worries me a bit that the 5.0.594
behaviour might represent a firewall vulnerability that malware could exploit).

Which is your firewall? Is avast allowed to connect?
Any other antivirus before avast?

I suggest an installation from scratch:

1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html) and save it.
2. Download the latest avast! (http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.html) version and save it.
3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode (http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml) and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode (http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml) and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you've run it.
5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
6. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
7. Check and post the results.

i noticed something wrong with later builds of Avast! 5

it's related to streamed content (e.g. with latest DivX and some other video (rarely also big audio files) ...

as some point the stream become 'cut' and cease to work

when you disable Avast 5 and reinit then all goes correctly

w7 64bit happens with latest Opera, IE, FF

I have to admit I hadn't noticed it as I generally don't right click on the avast icon without having a purpose in mind, e.g. selecting one of the options. But yes it is there in XP SP3 also and if you happen to hover over one of the sub-menu options and move away that, the sub-menu remains also.

i noticed something wrong with later builds of Avast! 5

it's related to streamed content (e.g. with latest DivX and some other video (rarely also big audio files) ...

as some point the stream become 'cut' and cease to work

when you disable Avast 5 and reinit then all goes correctly

w7 64bit happens with latest Opera, IE, FF
Hi!
I have been having the exact same problem with Avast 5 as well. When I watch a streaming video online it doesn't run smooth like it should. It is always skipping along. It was so annoying that I uninstalled the previous version and used a different AV program in which solved the problem(this was about a month ago). I hated switching because I have been really happy with Avast for many years. When I read yesterday that there was a new update I quickly uninstalled the other AV program and reinstalled Avast again hoping that the problem will be solved but unfortunately it isn't for me. Btw I'm happy to be using Avast again. :)

(using Windows XP with FF)

I just updated  to avast! Free Antivirus version 5.0.677.

As soon as I updated and restarted my computer, I began to get the following error messages when using my mail program:

"avast! will not be able to protect mail/news (error 12)
Please check that avast! service (AvastSvc.exe) is not
blocked by your personal firewall."

and:

"avast! will not be able to protect mail/news (error 2)
Please check that avast! service (AvastSvc.exe) is not
blocked by your personal firewall."

System is Windows 7 professional 64-bit
Windows firewall - (I have made sure AvastSvc.exe and AvastUI.exe are permitted)
Mail program is Mozilla Thunderbird version 2.0.0.24

This worked without problems before the update.

What is the problem?

you knew it wasn't there before buying didn't you? and if you read a bit more you would have known that bootscan on 64 bit OS won't be introduced before 5.1...that 5.1 will feature many new things...and that a year of development for all that is nothing special, that's normal ::)

ps: oh, one last thing, the bootscan belongs to the "free" version of Avast 5 ;D

My guess is limiting its growth potential, restricting it to either a file size or number of days records retained. I believe it would be part of avast's internal housekeeping so no option required in the settings.

before program update, i noticed my setup log was about 20MB...and now, it's so small. less than 1 MB.

Yes it will save me periodically disabling the self-defence module and deleting the two setup.log files.

One slight downside, the setup.log files are no longer in a user readable format, e.g. viewing in a text editor. So we won;t be able to ask a user to post the last 300 lines of the setup.log to see if we can find the reason for any errors they have/had.

OK Igor it should be up there as DavidR_Setup.7z a 7zip archive with the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Alwil Software\Avast5\log\Setup.log file enclosed.

The compression ration for 7z was impressive only 28KB

It uninstalled my previous version in the process, which it did not do when I let the automatic update do it.
Now all appears to be well.

Sandbox and ye even old XP and ye very old Dell computer.

Setup

1. Computer - Dell Dimension 2400 circa 2003?
2. Operating System - XP SP3 Home Edition
3. Ram - 2 1GB DIMMs DD 1
4. Processor - 2.20 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4 8 kilobyte primary memory cache 512 kilobyte secondary memory cache Not hyper-threaded
5. Graphics card - VISIONTEK RADEON 7000 Series [Display adapter]
6. Hard Drive Controller - Intel(R) 82801DB Ultra ATA Storage Controller - 24CB
7. Browser - Firefox 3.6.9
8. Browser Addons = 20 plus
9. Available Hard Drive space on OS drive - About 20GB

Firefox runs adequately for me on this computer non-sandboxed
However, sandboxed it runs very clunky and slower
Mouse cursor movement is very jerky

My guess is that this has something to do with a combination of 1-9 above.

No problems with clunkiness on my Windows 7 Home Premium machines, both netbook and desktop

However I have experienced what appears to be Java related problems running Firefox 4.0b4 on my Windows 7 64 bit computer. I can't comment about the 32bit version of Windows 7 because right now I don't use the netbook that much and did not notice any problem with the Java on the netbook before I stopped running Firefox 4.0b in the sandbox.

Firefox 4X handles Java graphics differently than Firefox 3X does.  I am now using Firefox 4.0b5 on my Windows 7 computers which is the latest beta release of Firefox but I haven't tested either Windows 7 computer yet to see if the periodic Java problems still exist or if they are limited to the 64 bit version of Windows 7.   I will wait until Firefox 4RC1 is released to try using 4.0 again in the Sandbox.

I do run some utilities at night while I am asleep that clean cache files, temporary files etc in that were created in Firefox during the day.   It could be that the problem occurred because I forgot to close Firefox before going to sleep and the cleaning utility messed up the Java.  However I noticed that closing and then reopening Firefox sandboxed did not clean up the appearance of the web pages affected.   I had to close Firefox remove it from running sandboxed and then clean all these cache and temp files, cookies etc.  Then when I reopened Firefox outside the sandbox the pages appeared okay.

If I accidentally forget to close Firefox while open non-sandboxed and these utility programs run then it appears that the Java related web page problems do not occur.

Regarding .667 and the Nightly scan of my XP computer.

I do a complete scan my computer's internal hard drive every night.  I scan my external archival and backup hard drive once a week.

The Nightly runs fine however several files were not being scanned.  I was getting the following

Scan does not read some files.  Get error message Error-Archive is password protected (42056). Note: I intentionally have not password protected these files

The list of programs currently included in the error list were

Dell Date Safe Local Backup
Spybot Search and Destroy
Users\xxxx\App Data\Roaming\Glary Utilities\
Users\xxxx\App Data\Uniblue\Driver Backup\Files

Thunderbird Backup with Moz Backup 1.4? - Get error message Error this file is a decompression bomb (42110)

-------------
Temp fix:  I either deleted some of these files and/or moved them off of my computer's hard drive so that they are no longer scanned during the "Nightly" scan.

The Nightly scan is now clean.  No virus and no errors.   I have only done this on the XP machine noted in the prior post.  Last night the scan time was about 36 minutes for 46GB of data.

All three computers have external hard drives attached.  So my file location handling and Nightly and Weekly scans are the same on all three computers.  I will follow up when I see what the Weekly scans looks like and the when I have had a chance to look at the Nightly scans on my Windows 7 netbook and Windows 7 desktop 64 bit computer.

You have to download the full program as it can't be updated through the Program Update function, that's why it is reporting your 4.8 version is up to date.

I don't know if this is the multi-language version http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_pro.exe (http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_pro.exe) - Avast! Pro antivirus Quick Start Guide http://files.avast.com/files/documentation/quick-start-guide-pro-en-ww.pdf (http://files.avast.com/files/documentation/quick-start-guide-pro-en-ww.pdf)

If not you can download the Danish Language pack, click the avast icon and from the avastUI, Settings, Language section, Install additional languages button and download the Danish pack, see image.

This has been covered many times I can't understand why you haven't noticed it.

With 64bit OS versions there are currently no 64bit rules for the behaviour shield, so you are unlikely to get any statistics even if it is running. This should change in avast 5.1 as far as I'm aware there will be more Behaviour Shields rules for 32bit OS and 64bit OS should be included.

After patch about one week.
My Secunia PSI says avast! V5.0.677 is secure.

I have Secunia PSI 2.0 beta installed, too.  It also indicates that Adobe Reader 9.3.4 is patched and shows no vulnerability but that's not true.

http://www.adobe.com/support/security/advisories/apsa10-02.html (http://www.adobe.com/support/security/advisories/apsa10-02.html)

The information that PSI 2 presents to the user is not as complete as PSI 1.5.0.2, plus by default it is set to autoupdate any programs that has patches.  I've disabled that function, as I'd rather control that myself.

Secunia is aware of the Acrobat Reader issue.  http://secunia.com/advisories/41340 (http://secunia.com/advisories/41340).  There is an issue with QuickTime 7.6.7 http://secunia.com/advisories/41213/ (http://secunia.com/advisories/41213/).  However, since Adobe and Apple haven't yet made patches available, PSI 2 reports nothing in it's default view as it did before.  One can double-click on the individual program's line in PSI's results page and another window will open with a link where one can click on the Secunia Advisory to view the advisory in their default browser.

I think that the DLL loading vulnerability mentioned in http://secunia.com/advisories/41109 (http://secunia.com/advisories/41109) was addressed in one of the Avast beta releases, but at this time cannot find it in the forums.

I just visited the link you provided.  Adobe has had major problems with vulnerabilities in all their products for some time.

I've mitigated some of the Reader vulnerability by disabling Adobe JavaScripting, and disabling the plugin within Firefox.  Most of the other PDF viewers have had vulnerabilities in the past, most notably Foxit.

Based on my post about PSI 2, do you still fully trust the results it presents to you? ::)

Nope, still doesn't work, it stopped again at 99% when reach 47.08 MB from 47.12 MB, the link said that I am downloading from download858.avast.com. It always like this for this version, and the automatic download always failed. I don't know what is happening.

Are you using a download manager ?
If not try one and see if that makes any difference, at the least it should be able to pick up where it left off.

David,

Yes, I am using the lastest Orbit Downloader, I can see Orbit is trying to create a new link to download, but it closed again & again. I don't know what happen with the last 0.04 MB, why Orbit can't retrieve it.

Updating from GUI, said "connection terminated, retrying... http:download***.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_ais-2a5.vpx" and it always ended fail with error connection terminated at the very last.

I would like to download from other site for this version (avast pro), but I guess the only direct download available today is from avast website.

You say that you are trying to download avast pro (stand alone antivirus, no firewall or anti-spam), but what you were trying to download is AIS (avast pro, plus firewall and anti-spam), which is different, not that that should make a difference. So what version is it that you are after ?

This is a direct link for avast pro http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_pro.exe (http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_pro.exe) if it is the pro version you are looking for.

I gave up on Orbit Downloader a while back and just went for the firefox add-on (if you are using firefox), Download Them All, http://www.downthemall.net/ I'm not using any beta version just the 1.1.10 version.

When you update from the GUI, it is the ais one that is downloaded...IIRC, I noticed this when updating to 677 myself.

(and I use the free version)

EDIT: you can also see it in the setup log:
Code: [Select]

17:57:02 min/gen  Running setup_ais-2a5 (677)

Yes, but Cahya doesn't appear to be updating from the GUI as he said he is using a Orbit download manager, thought the reference he gave was from a failed UI update.

So I don't know what error message he got in Orbit download or what file he tried to download or what location he tried. That is what I'm trying to find out, I guess we will have to wait for a response from Cahya.

@ Cahya
What is your internet connection (dial-up or broadband) ?
leave the update from the UI for the time being, did you try one from Orbit downloader, if so what was the error you got there ?

David,

I tried both GUI manual update, and try to download with download manager the stand alone installer/setup file after failed with GUI. I tried using Orbit Downloader, some browsers' default download manager (including Opera, Forefox and Chrome), the last I am trying DownloadThemAll (Firefox extension), but all the setup file download stopped at 99%.

I am using dial-up connection with average download speed about 10-15 kbps, so it took about an hour to download avast setup file (theoretically). The download process started normally, I download a lot of files and updates for my other softwares without problem. But after reaching the last percent, the speed drop to zero, I don't know what happening, I don't thing my connection go down, since I can browse website or download other file - just as fine as how it should be - like opening this forum page.

Orbit Downloader, shows the cycle of trying to create new download link and closed download link endlessly (seems just like that), and DonwloadThemAll don't show anything but a zero download speed. And if I tried to pause and resume again, the same pattern started again and again for the last percent. I have been trying those methods again few times a day to see (and pray) if one of them would work - but still no luck.

Since everyone seems doesn't have any problem with the update, so I thought the problem lies within my system/computer, but I just can't guess where it is. I'll try to download on other computer, or try to find another ISP, and see if I can download the setup.

Thanks for the help anyway :)

Well I'm at a loss as to what it might be as trying to download outside of avast, e.g. orbit and download them all, suffer the same fate, if it were avast it would get through on the others.

So the only thing I can thing of is the dial-up connection, but why Orbit or Download Them All can't resume I don't know, perhaps it can't reconnect to the same download681.avast.com/iavs5x server.

David,

I thought something like that too. I just moving to new area, maybe the dial-up connection (I use CDMA 1x network) having trouble, since I never experienced something like this before on my previous area (where I got EVDO Rev. A network).

Thank you, sorry for the trouble :D. I'll try again today, I just love avast :).

Using build 5.0.667, I searched the board for issues related to Tray Icon Not Loading. Some recommended adding a command to the Registry. That looked too permanent and forgettable to me. It would continue no matter what updates or removal of software one might encounter if like me you forget all the long strings to find that Run location.
Instead I created a .bat file, a file that will execute a command created in Windows Notepad. Here are the recommended steps to create this simple command and get it up and running for Windows XP.
Start>Run>Notepad.
Notepad is a simple text editor. Type in or copy these two lines into Notepad:

c:\"program files"\"alwil software"\avast5\AvastUI.exe /NoGUI
exit

Save the file by naming it something like TrayIcon.bat. When you look at the save interface, it will show a box saying Text Documents (.txt)  Change this to All Files (*.*) using the drop down arrow. If you don't do this it will add .txt to the end of the name (TrayIcon.bat.txt) and will not execute.

I saved this file to the root of my C:\ drive. Easy to find.

Then add the name of this file in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup by adding a new shortcut C:\TrayIcon.bat.

This file and the startup command are easy to find and edit, modify or delete.  Hope this works for you as it has for me.

I haven't seen anybody say that they had a problem with the icon not showing. There already is a registry entry that runs AvastUI.exe with the NoGui switch at startup. This .bat file seems redundant.

Also my RAM usage has been bouncing in heaven and i don't even have other programs running. Is there a solution for this?

Thanks

I just let know that I have solved my problem. I used other PC and ISP to manually download the new avast engine, and installed it on my notebook, and it works fine.

Thanks.

Please start a New Topic of your own as this will just confuse the current thread and we will help you there.

Go to this link, http://forum.avast.com/index.php (http://forum.avast.com/index.php), scroll down to the Avast Free/Pro/Suite forum and click it, click the New Topic button at the top of the list and post there.  Thank you.

As reported in another thread, one of my computers has 5.0.377 installed and says latest program version is 5.0.418.  Clicking Update Program button goes nowhere.  Why doesn't it just say that .677 is available and let it install?  I'm sure this is covered somewhere but I can't read the whole board.

whatever the problem is, just download 5.0.677 and install it manually over your current version. No need to wait until something happens

Hi, VLK, Hi Avast Team.
Unfortunately there is a problem.
I set avast 5.0.677 as follows:
"Real-time shields"
1) scan when opening: i add "scan all file";
2) scan when writing: i add "scan all file";
3) used "transied caching" and "do not scan system dlls";
4) sensitivity: heuristic sensitivity high, use code emulation, scan for potentially unwanted programs.

Results: When I open a folder that contains many executables, explorer takes at least 15 seconds before access to files or the scroll bar can be used.
Sometimes it generates the total freezing of explorer processes which must be forcibly closed by the task manager.
Also reducing the level of heuristics or disabling the emulation code this happens.
I noticed that the problem occurs because of an "scan all files, regardless of other settings, and seems to be concerned avastsvc.exe which absorbs more than 60% -70% of CPU resources when the problem verification.
Could you please check? Thank you.

Guys, AvastSvc.exe is the service where a lot of things take place - most importantly all the scanning. So the memory usage may rise a lot sometimes (I mean, if you're scanning an archive with huge files inside, it might be hundreds of megabytes for a while).
So, comparing the values doesn't really make much sense - they heavily depend on what exactly is going on on the system at the moment (and even if the actions are done already, it might take a while for the values to get low).

There will be no steady state because of the nature of an AV depending on what you are doing, will force one or more of the on-access shields to be running and that is going to generate RAM use. Since there was no avastSvc.exe in avast 4.8 but ashServ.exe, ashWebSv.exe and ashMaiSv.exe, there is no direct comparison (you would have to total all of those as a very basic rule of thumb).

Be assured that avast5's use of resources is lighter than avast4 for the same activity, the problem being is that there is no way to do a direct comparison unless you had two identical systems doing exactly the same thing, one with 4.8 the other with 5.0.

Honestly it isn't worth the time and effort worrying about it, the AV is there to protect you and it has to use system resources to do that. I guess you could stop browsing, running other processes, etc. and then avast would be using minimal resources only that to actually load the program (not scan).

I remember that with Avast! 4 my commit charge was always over 300M/2460M, with Avast! 5 it's usualy always under 300M (that's when I don't use any regular on-demand programs of course).

If you are concerned about RAM, stick another 1GB in there it is relatively inexpensive and an easy upgrade that will improve overall system performance, bot just for avast.

Bellzemos's system may not support large capacity RAM sticks, and they may be considerable more expensive where he is, the US is much more competitive. But a smaller stick should hopefully be supported and cheaper.

@ Bellzemos
Use the likes of crucial to find out what RAM you need for your system, and then go hunting on ebay, etc. for a better deal, even with carriage it is likely to be cheaper than a local retail shop.

Try to start you CPU in safe mode and then uninstall avast from add remove program's to get you cpu working again then we can discuss what you previously had on your cpu prior to your install of avast. It is also better to start a new topic for yourself so other people will notice and be able to help.

Use the likes of crucial to find out what RAM you need for your system, and then go hunting on ebay, etc. for a better deal, even with carriage it is likely to be cheaper than a local retail shop.

EVEREST says that about my RAM:

System Memory ....... 1024 MB  (PC3200 DDR SDRAM)

DIMM1: A-Data DNGC1A16 ....... 1 GB PC3200 DDR SDRAM  (3.0-3-3-8 @ 200 MHz)  (2.5-3-3-7 @ 166 MHz)

So, that means that I have... 1 GB of RAM installed in the first DIMM slot? Do I have to buy the same brand (A-Data) in order to make it work flawless? So, it's DDR, not DDR2 or 3. Is it SDRAM, what is this? Is it 200MHz or 166MHz? If you can explain that to me so that I can go hunting for an additional GB of memory... Thank you! :)

PS: Is it wise to buy a used module?
Title: Re: New *release* build of avast now available (5.0.677)
Post by: DavidR on September 23, 2010, 02:04:48 AM
Generally you don't have to buy the same brand, possibly the only thing to consider is not buying generic (unbranded) RAM.

This is where you have to be careful, your old system is likely to be DDR not DDR2, which is why I suggested visiting crucial as they have a tool to identify what RAM and motherboard bus speed are in your system, from that information suggest compatible RAM for it. Mind you possibly the most important bit is the PC3200 as you could essentially just do a search on that 1gb PC3200 so providing that is in your search string you shouldn't go wrong.

Once armed with that information then you can go shopping for RAM of that specification of any of the major brand names, crucial being one top brand, Kingston and Corsair are more value brands but still up to the task.

These (3.0-3-3-8 @ 200 MHz)  (2.5-3-3-7 @ 166 MHz) represent timings if the RAM is used at either 200 or 166 MHz, it isn't really anything to be concerned with if your mother board was only 333 MHz then the RAM would be running at 166 MHz.

See this example search of froogle (google shopping), this is localised for the UK, there may be one for Europe or Slovenia, http://www.google.co.uk/products?q=1GB+PC3200+DDR+SDRAM (http://www.google.co.uk/products?q=1GB+PC3200+DDR+SDRAM), this is an ordinary google search, http://www.google.com/search?q=1GB+PC3200+DDR+SDRAM (http://www.google.com/search?q=1GB+PC3200+DDR+SDRAM).

Used RAM can represent good value, but you have no warranty so it could work out an expensive bargain.

You then need to enter/apply the license to the new program, otherwise it would be still a trial version (30 days). Did you enter/apply this license ?

I had an older version of AVAST and kept getting a reminder that Avast Program would expire...So I paid the 29.95 fee to update.. This new version loaded up and it is informing me that I only have a 30 Day trial version.. What Happened here?  I also have an ashAvast.EXE file on my desktop that is incomplete..

Sincerely,
SAWOOL
<snip>

You should have a) received an email with your licence file attached or b) a link in that email to download that license file. Did you receive the License email ?

You then need to enter/apply the license to the new program, otherwise it would be still a trial version (30 days). Did you enter/apply this license ?

- Check out these knowledge-base articles for the version you have:
- Inserting the license key into: avast! Pro Antivirus (http://support.avast.com/index.php?languageid=1&group=eng&_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=475) Or avast! Internet Security (http://support.avast.com/index.php?languageid=1&group=eng&_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=476).

Just make sure you know where you save the "license" file when you download it.

After you have downloaded the Avast License file you will then have to use use Avast to upload it into the actual program.

Just my opinion but the name of that file should be changed to something like "ALicense" rather than just the generic "License" name.

Behavior Shield is not working (Windows Ultimate, 32-bit).
Other than that, version 5.0.677 is much lighter!

According to the Help Center, it 'monitors all activity on your computer and detects and blocks any unusual activity that might indicate the presence of malware. It does this by continuously monitoring your computer's entry points using special sensors to identify anything suspicious.'

That's all well and good but it should at least record what gets blocked in it's log file like the other elements of Avast! do.

I am happy to note that an old problem I complained about last February was completely solved in this version.  See topic named "High CPU utilization in avast! 5.0.418 and previous versions" at http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=55554.0 (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=55554.0).

At the time some people (not Vlk) were somewhat dismissive of my problem.  Now it was finally solved and I feel vindicated.  There was a problem after all!

I believe it has been said that pirated versions turn into free versions, why disable the entire thing when there is a free version.
Am I right?

Martin.-

Well that is hardly any sort of punishment to fit the crime of software piracy and provide a salient reminder about using pirated software. At the very least I would completely disable it with a suitable pop-up about the risks of using pirated/cracked software., no conversion to the free product.

Look, I'm just saying that we are aware of the cracked versions and are able to react at any time and in any way.
There is no specific policy at the moment, so I am not saying when and what is going to happen - just that we're able to prepare some surprises, should we want to.

And I don't really think it's necessary to talk about it very much... everybody using cracked versions (of anything) should be aware of the risks - you never have any guarantee that the software will work correctly, all the functions will be available etc.

Sure. But you can share this information and alert some missinformed user.
I mean, I think MS Genuine policy made a lot of users to get away from piracy.
You're always saying that you're aware, that you can act.
A software that could be pirated is a less secure software, or has a security model that could be bypassed.
I'm thinking about trustfulness.

I think the main point of MS Genuine was to make those users aware who didn't even know they were using a non-genuine version (had it preinstalled when they received the computer etc.)

You can say something similar about avast! 4.x and its keygens - the users might not even know that they bought a fake license key. But if they have to replace an avast! executable (with all the disabling of avast! self-defense and stopping the processes - which is a hard task for an ordinary user), I'd bet they know.

Hi!
I've had troubles with this new version (5.0.677). Sometimes it doesn't update automatically the motor and virus database! Even I have a desktop computer, in which it doesn't update since the program new version was installed (09/24/10). Am I the only one having these problems? Help me, please!

When will a new version be released?
avast! still has a lot of bug..  :(
Fix them, and then avast only needs to improve the detection, and it will be a great software!

Fix them

Easy to say ? But is it easy to do it ?

A program will never be bugs free.

A program will never be bugs free.

But avast has lots of big bugs.
Other antiviruses haven't got any, or if they have, the bugs will be fixed in about 1-2 months.

Well understand it that avast! is releached for like if im not wrong 3-4 months or more so its take times to fixes bugs.

Just be patient and if there bugs then let a member of their team to know and they will try their best.

Mr.Agent

PS : Its aint easy to do and got a job like this so let give them the time and thank them. If you batch them its wont help its will just be worst.

I don't know about "big bugs". It seems to me that 99% of the users have not encountered any.

For example, lots of people can't access the net through the browsers when the web shield is on. I think it is a "big bug". And In my opinion, about 99,99% of users don't know this forum, and don't report any bugs on it.

Lots of people who visit the 'support' forums you mean, which is par for a support forum. If this were a 'bug' it would be impacting 'every' avast user, that is the nature of a 'bug.'

That clearly isn't the case (though it is a pain for those it is affecting) or there would be a flood of the 130 million plus avast users hitting the forums. But for those that are experiencing a problem. It needs to be worked through to try and identify the cause as there are so many different permutation of what is on an individual users system, firewall, other security applications, previous AV (if remnants remain) and any number of other things that may well conflict with the web shield. So this isn't something that is easily found.

By far the greatest majority of avast5 users are suffering none of these issues, but they don't come to the forums to shout about the fact that they don't have any problem.

Pleased to report that (after a firewall component uninstall and reinstall) the long filename/short filename problem appears resolved in 5.0.677. Starts via both filename versions of an application (I tried on wksss.exe) are now blocked from outbound connection by the same rule.

@mag:

Will this be fixed in 5.1?
Thanks
