Hello,
I've just bought a PC ACER Aspire AMD Athlon 64x2, and reformated the hard disk, and installed a new XP SP3. Everything works fine.
After installation of AVAST, the web access through Mozilla Firefox or IE is impossible, although the internet connection is there (good update of Avast files or windows)
Do you have some possible explanations ?

Had the same issue with the latest update. I've been using the Free version for months but every since the very latest update (I have it set to download and install updates automatic) the Internet connectivity was intermittent. Completely uninstalled Avast and the problem hasn't come back. I run Windows 7 64 bit, firewall is off. Also, when I would try to go into Avast control panel the program wouldn't respond.
If there's a log file or anything a tech wants to look at let me know.

I had the same problem on all 3 of my pc's had to uninstall and re install.Firewall had nothing to do with it as I tried it with the firewall shut off.Working fine now.

I'm using Avast 5 Free.
I've the standard firewall of Windows XP, I touched nothing from the standard XP installation
If I desactivate AVAST, the WEB access is Ok. When I reactivate, the WEB access is gone.
What can be the cause ?
By the way i just read above that marc-d-l had the same problem, and solved it by uninstall and reinstall ?

With my new XP SP3 installation, the first program i installed was Avast5 free.

***What other security software do you currently have or did you have in the past on this machine including antivirus (AV), firewall (FW), and other security programs? If they were in the past, how did you remove them (the vendor's uninstaller's tool or another way)?
Have you tried a Repair of Avast:
- Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > Avast Antivirus > Remove.
- Then choose Repair function in the pop-up window (Repair). Reboot.
If the repair fails, follow these exact instructions for an uninstall and CLEAN install of Avast:
1. Save a copy of newest version of Avast (5.0.677) for the version you need and save it to your HDD:
Free – http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free_eng.exe (http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free_eng.exe) - (English only)
Free – http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe (http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe) - (Multi-language version)
2. Download the Avast Uninstall Utility, aswClear5.exe http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility) and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 4.0 and 5.0).
3. Disconnect from the Internet at this time.
4. Boot into Safe Mode (http://Safe Mode) (hit F8 repeatedly) and run the Avast Uninstall Tool.
5. Reboot twice.
6. Install the newest version of Avast and reboot.
7. Get Internet access and update Avast definitions.
8. Register your copy or add the license key for Free

as, I said, my ACER M3100 PC has just been reformatted, with a new XP/SP3 installation : so no programm, no other other antivirus.
I've tried already a proper clean uninstall and reinstall, as you explain, but the result is the same.

Check your computer for malware with Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware (MBAM).
· Download free http://www.malwarebytes.org/ (http://www.malwarebytes.org/) for an on-demand scanner.
· Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
· After install, click update so you have latest database before scanning.
· Under Settings:
o General: Automatically Save File After Scan Completes is checked off
o Scanner Settings: Check all boxes
o Updater: Download and install update if available is checked off
· Once the program has loaded, select "Perform FULL Scan", then click Scan.
· The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
· When the disinfection scan is complete, a log will appear in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note).
· Click the “remove selected” button to quarantine anything found. You will find the infection details under the Quarantine tab.
· The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
· Copy & Paste the entire report in your next reply.

I think a conflict of windows update.
Is you OS Legit?
Did you try uninstalling Firefox? and see if IE has a web access?

I also encounter this issue. After updating to 5.0.677 (aIS, and it's the only security-related software on my pc, with Windows firewall and UAC off), I have to disable Webshield after booting before I can get access to Internet. Though I doubt why Webshield would suddenly work fine and doesn't block my connection if I restart it some time later(15 minutes at least or so, I think).
Anyone got an idea on what's wrong???
PS: I've tried a clean re-installing of it, but of no effect.

It seems that we are many to have exactly the same problem, in the same conditions !
On my side, I've a legit XP, and no other program installed, except Avast 5 free and Firefox. I don't know if windows updates can make a conflict.

This looks like a Quick Scan was done, but it came up clean (no malware), which is good.
How do you normally connect to the Internet? Cable, DSL, proxy?
When you open the Avast GUI > Settings > Details > Update Parameters...what is checked off (anything or not)?
When you open the Avast GUI > Settings > Details > Proxy Settings...what is checked off (there are 3 buttons: the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd)?

IE6 is very old and very vulnerable to attack and should be updated to IE8 as it is much safer and faster.
IE is used everywhere in Windows so it should be at the latest level.

- I did really a full scan, but as the PC is just installed, there is nothing except XP, Mozilla and Avast, thus the number of file is reduced.
- I'm connected with an Ethernet cable to my AOL box (ADSL line). No proxy
- Update parameters : auto update of the virus data base in checked on, ask for program update is checked on
- proxy settings : automatic detection is checked on
To answer YoKenny, I do not intend to use Internet Explorer 6 (I know it's obsolete), but Mozilla : so is it important to update IE6 to IE8 anyway ?

You're confusing Windows Explorer (the Windows GUI) with Internet Explorer (the web browser).

You need to update you window's explorer because there are processes in your cpu that still require internet explorer to function and update correctly

See my notations in blue and red above in your quotes. Are these the settings you have, especially the one in red?
To confirm what the other posters have wrote, yes it is important to keep ALL your software and browsers up to date, including IE even if you don't use it. By not keeping it up to date, this allows for many security holes and opportunities for malware to get into your machine. I would suggest that you check the free Secunia Software Inspector http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/ (http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/)and scan your machine weekly - direct vendor links are given to you at this site for easy updates. Many of us here use this since software is changing so often now.
You should also at some point think about installing a third-party firewall (FW) as the one for XP does not offer a 2-way protection and can allow nasties into your machine. FW's that have been known not to conflict with Avast are Online Armor (free and paid) http://www.online-armor.com/ (http://www.online-armor.com/); Outpost (free and paid) http://free.agnitum.com/ (http://free.agnitum.com/); Comodo without antivirus http://www.comodo.com/home/internet-security/firewall.php (http://www.comodo.com/home/internet-security/firewall.php); and of course Avast Internet Security (AIS).

I have updated IE6 to IE8. Ok
I have then uninstalled properly Avast 5 Free, and re-installed it.
Same problem than before : internet is there, but no web connection (except if I disable Avast)
Any other idea ?

At this point, I would suggest submitting a mini-dump file to Avast to analyze:

Windows XP here.
I had the exact same problem. Used free avast for years with no problem Paid $39 and no internet. My ISP said there was a program preventing internet access. I went into my Network Connections, found my LAN connection, went to Properties, and under the area where it lists "things that are used by this connection" it listed an avast Firewall. I unchecked that item and no problems since.
Now I have to find out why my Thunderbird email client won't work now. That problem surfaced at the same time as the loss of internet.

I'm having exacting the same problem, but with the Internet Security suite.
I don't believe it's proxy settings or IE or anything liek that. I reckon it's something to do with network protocols.
Because I used wired a connection to my router with no access, but when I check wireless there are no networks displayed, when I know there are at least 10 out there.
And when I unistall the program everything re-appears and is re-established !!
I'm running the trial version so it's not looking so far !!
I was (happily) running v4 pro with Windows Home Server.

SafeSurf, PLEASE, continue to work on that problem, I have EXACTLY the sam problem with my customer!! She has payable AVAST and Internet stoped working!!! At the end, after few days I uninstall Avast and install Avira... don't ask!!! But it's not right, if she has purchased version.
