Title: [Resolved] CANT ACCESS INTERNET using avast AIS 5
Post by: Skowy on September 19, 2010, 06:15:48 AM
Since down loading avast i have not been able to access any website;

a. i have removed all previous anti viruses prior to loading avast
b. i have a windows firewall and deactivated it - but that's not the issue
c. the internet connection is working - ISP confirmed this and sent a technician to test it and it works
d. I bought a brand new router and modem because i thought the old ones were broken -

the only way i can surf the internet is via disabling the web shield [not a good choice, esp when i paid for this service]

the outlook express application will not send receive - but if i disable the mail shield it allows it

so basically, if i disable avast i get to use the internet and email people ????? hmmmmm....what the...?

can anyone help me -

The OP made duplicate postings in this thread: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=64010.msg541514#msg541514 (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=64010.msg541514#msg541514), but was told to create his/her own thread.

@ Skowy, As you now know, please only post in one thread, one that you start, so there is no confusion with people trying to help you.  Continue to post in this thread since the other thread is for the other OP.  Thank you.

okay, thanks SafeSurf, i have not run a removal tool - i have gone back in control panel and into unistall/install programs menu but there is no known anti-virus program in the list? do you think i should run the program you suggest...?

or is this problem specific to the avast application?  use widows XP and firefox browser however sometimes chrome but no browser will function -

You shod first tell us what AVs you previously had installed as we have links to many specific uninstall tools

As I said in the other topic, your firewall XP's has no outbound protection so shouldn't interfere with avast. That leaves potential conflict with other AVs or remnants of previous AVs.

So yes you should run the uninstallers for these previous AVs to ensure all remnants are gone. The windows add remove programs only reports if a program is installed, it won't detect remnants of a previous AV after uninstall.

These uninstallers are from the specific AV company in most cases, these have detailed knowledge of registry entries, files not located in the program files folder, etc. and are designed to remove all remnants.

okay - i found in my emailbox that i have registered Pro version 4 in 2009 under a 2 year license expiring june next year - the reason i did not know was because recently my computer crashed and i had a new motherboard installed and the old version 4 was not reinstalled...hence the reason why i bought Pro version 5

Now i think version 4 is interfering with version 5 HOWEVER version 4 is not installed on my computer Now?

Before I had avast i had norton and i have since used the uninstaller from the link provided above but thats really not the issue because everything has been reformatted - i mean would this remnant exist even after installing a new mother board??

If you had done a format after uninstalling Norton then it should have been cleared out. The same would be correct of avast 4.x pro.

Try a clean reinstall of avast 5 using the instructions below:
- Download the latest version of avast pro, 5.0.677 http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_pro.exe (http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_pro.exe) and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.

- Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear5.exe find it here (http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility) and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 4.8 and 5.0).
Your old avast 4.x Pro license should still be valid, but you will need to convert it as it won't work in avast5:
- avast! 5 Pro license convert from 4.8 Pro license. Try http://www.avast.com/resend-license.php (http://www.avast.com/resend-license.php) now, fill in the form giving your email and 4.8 Pro License key and they will send the new license file to you (presumably it will check you have a legit 4.8 Pro license first).

Should this be done to the laptop as well as the PC -

I really don't know why avast support team are not helping me through this problem i have sent a detailed ticket [screen shots and hyjackthis text files and receipts along with everything i could possibly note, and after 3 days they say to me have you tried to disable the web shield?]7 days to say to that???? and they do not respond? its been 7 DAYs as an EMERGENCY but its as though they laugh? no offense to you but am i to trust the word of a forum? or the technical support team via the submit ticket system?

I have avast 5 on the laptop, but the application appears different the heading says 'internet security' But on the PC the application says Pro anti virus 5 NOW, on the laptop there are firewall settings unlike the PC? the laptop works without a glitch but not on the PC i have to disable webshields and emailshields and i dont understand why this happening?

Do i simply wait for the stupid technical support team to help me or simply take the advice from the forum? If i uninstall the avast program from the PC will this upset the avast program on the laptop? the laptop is the only thing i got for secure internet connectivity?

I would try forum first, ticket second.  That is just preference, but for sure don't consult both at once or you might get conflicting instructions.

DavidR knows what he is talking about, I would try that route first.  Only clean-install on the system giving you problems. (the pc, not the laptop, correct?).

And no, this should have no bad effect on the other Avast! installed on your laptop that I can see.

It didn't work - i uninstalled the avast program and reinstalled it - but it continues to not allow internet connectivity to view websites -

I do not have 4.8 license key information and the 4.8 install is completely gone from computer...i am using the license key information for the avast 5

Okay this is what puzzles me -

on my laptop the avast application 5.0.677 contains a firewall setting BUT after reinstalling the avast 5 onto PC the application doesn't contain the firewall sidebar like it does for the laptop?

the header you know, the top of the application next to the avast logo states on the laptop INTERNET SECURITY but on the PC it states PRO ANTI VIRUS and yet i used the same license and the same excutable download for both?

is this a problem or is it normal? i am totally stumped now...the license if for 3 computers and i have used it only on a laptop [works] and PC [not working]

Ohhhh....well, did you only make a single purchase?  If so, it sounds like you downloaded 2 different setup files, and one was the wrong one.

Avast! Internet Security, license works for 3 pc's, but an AIS license might indeed have a problem activating Avast! Pro.

Or did you renew your original pro subscription from Avast! 4?

Check you purchase e-mails if you cant remember.

i have used the same license file on the PC and the laptop - i confirm the customer numbers in both PC and LP are the same in both downloads

Post by: Gargamel360 on September 25, 2010, 04:02:57 AM
Well, that part straightened out, now you need to download and install the correct setup file on the PC.

Here is a link for AIS install>>http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_ais.exe (http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_ais.exe)

Repeat the clean install procedure (yes, I know, again), but use the setup file through the link I gave instead.   Sorry for the hassle, it just wasn't initially clear that you went from 4.8 pro to AIS, it seemed you where just upgrading from old Pro to new v.5 Pro.

Let us know how it goes.

 :( No joy.....

Have you tried turning the Web Shield off since you last re-installed, if not try that again to make sure it is indeed same problem.

Also, since this is now Avast Internet Security you have installed, does the firewall have a rule for Fx established yet?

btw, you have 20 posts now, if you wouldn't mind modifying your profile to include basic system info (like mine, but without the....colorful parts at the end),  it can help the forum members help you.

This be beyond my ken, I think.   Someone with more know-how is needed, perhaps someone to read one of you logs or some such detailed troubleshoot, or just to think of one of the likely many things I have not thought of yet.

I will pass the buck, send someone a PM who can either help you better or find one who can.
Sorry for the headache.

Anyone else is free to try in the meantime, of course. :)

Title: Re: CANT ACCESS INTERNET using avast Pro 5

This is the total rundown of the troubleshooting outcomes to date;

1.   I have removed all previous anti viruses prior to loading Avast on PC
2.   I have a windows firewall and deactivated it - but that's not the issue
3.   the internet connection is working - ISP confirmed this and sent a technician to test it and it works – my laptop connects and no error when browsing
4.   I bought a brand new router and modem because i thought the old ones were broken –
5.   the only way i can surf the internet is via disabling the web shield
6.   The only way i can send / receive emails is via disabling the mail shield
7.   I have checked that “firefox” is not the issue – proxy settings are correct
8.   I have uninstalled and reinstalled the Avast application [AIS]
9.   I have inputted the correct license number because the customer number is compatible with my Laptop and my Laptop is working without error
The browser error: this is the error that i see when i attempt to browse via any browser namely fire fox but chrome and IE respond with the same error;
The connection was reset
The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.
*   The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.
*   If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection.
*   If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to     access the Web.
Basically –
I have used the same set up program for my laptop and it work, but the PC doesn’t work unless i disable the web shield...
I have sent a support ticket to the technical team marked as “emergency” but they continue to ignore the issue and have NOT RESPONDED IN 7 DAYS really disappointing for what i considered a good company;

The following is for the machine that is not working properly:

1. Have you tried resetting your firewall settings?
2. Please check to see if you have the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package installed on your machine, look in Add/Remove Programs to see if you have Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package listed.  If not, download the file (see below) and restart your machine.

When folks are having troubles with Avast installs and similar it could also be a dependency problem. Make sure you have Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package installed and updated BEFORE you attempt to install Avast.  Actually this is good general advice anyway, for maximum compatibility and in order to avoid problems with applications written in Visual C++ it is always a good idea to have all the C++ redistributables installed and fully updated.  Many programs require them to function properly; one important example is ATI drivers.  It is often seen when the installs went bad or were unable to install the drivers because of either missing or not updated C++ Redistributable Package.

Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package ATL Security Update
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=766a6af7-ec73-40ff-b072-9112bab119c2 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=766a6af7-ec73-40ff-b072-9112bab119c2)

Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x86)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=a7b7a05e-6de6-4d3a-a423-37bf0912db84 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=a7b7a05e-6de6-4d3a-a423-37bf0912db84)

Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x64)

If the above fails, the next step is submitting a memory dump file is needed for Avast to analyze what is going on.  This would be only for the machine that is NOT working (I understand your laptop is now working fine).  Remember to rename your file that you submit uniquely.

Here is additional information on how to invoke a memory dump file:  http://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=71 (http://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=71).  Avast will analyze the information and report back to you in this thread or by email.  They do not work over the weekend, so there will be a delay.  I thank you very much as you have been very patient.

Please go back to the FIRST post and edit/modify the title of the it from "Pro 5" to AIS.  Thank you.

Please let us know in the meantime if we can help you in anyway, and we will continue to provide you with support and help you.  Thank you.

By deafult avast! FW should auto allow it's own processes to connect but i am wondering if somehow your rules got changed. How do you have your FW set up ? You need to allow internet access to avast's webshield or none of your browsers will work(it's not enough to just allow FF). Can you give us a screenshot of your application rules ? Here is how mine looks like.

(http://www.shrani.si/t/39/Or/gM6L1QM/fw.jpg) (http://www.shrani.si/?39/Or/gM6L1QM/fw.png)

You can also turn on webshield, open up FF, try to browse some sites and check the in the FW logs to see if it's blocking anything.

Here is how it looks like on my machine when i block internet access to IE and try to brose some sites with it(don't have FF installed sorry):

@ Skowy,

m416 gave you excellent suggestions regarding the firewall settings and asks some good questions for you to respond to.

I know we have asked you this in the past, but more information has come out as we talk to you more about your problems.  What other security programs (Firewall, Antivirus, security programs in general) do you currently have on the computer that does not work and in the past?  If it was in the past, how did you uninstall the software (the vendor's uninstaller tool or some other way)?  Thank you.

Hey i think it's best if he runs HijackThis and give us a list of installed programs:

http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/

Open HJT, go to Open The Misc Tools Section and then Open Uninstall Manager and Save List.
You will get a dialog to save uninstall_list.txt. Save it somewhere on your hdd and then attach it to your post here.

We work quickly here in the forum, and we are trying to resolve your problem as quickly as possible.  If getting the information needed from you can do this (like your HijackThis log) can help us, then we ask you to please provide it.

To post something as an attachment (like your HijackThis log): In the Post windows > (Additional Options > Attach > Browse > Post).

Skowy, we are here 24/7, and understand that it can be frustrating to have a computer issue, so that is why we ask for information (including logs) to help you so that we can help fix your problem as quickly as possible.  Thank you.

Hi

I have exactly the same problem.  I was using Avast 4 Pro previously.  I think the problem is more deep rooted than proxy setting etc...

Normally I use a "wired" connection to my router, but now I can't even see it, so I tried wireless and I can't even see any networks, even though I know they're out there !!

I ran the install, which uninstalled the v4pro, everything seemed to go ok, but after the machine rebooted I had lost all network connectivity.  I disabled all the shields and the firewall but nothing except uninstalling the product made any difference.

I'm running XP Pro and I have Spybot, Windows Defender and Malwarebytes running on the machine.

ps I running the trial version - glad I haven't paid for it yet !!!

I did ask the Avast Sales Support people before trialing it, if there were any know conflicts with the other products I run and they said try it and see.  I'm not keen on their "suck it and see" attitude !!!

I'm going to let someone familiar with interpreting HijackThis logs read your log and report in this post.

i received this from the technical support team but can someone explain it - set the Web Shield "Heuristics sensitivity" to low and try again?
What they want you do to is this:

Open your Avast GUI > click on Real Time Shields > click on Web Shield > click on Expert Settings (right side of page) > click on Sensitivity > you should see 4 orange bars (like a bar graph) and it should default on the "Normal" 3rd bar...they want you to click on the 2nd bar = Low > click "OK" on the bottom of the page > close this window and the Avast GUI > reboot your machine (if you have an XP, reboot twice).  Now see if things work.

@ mrsgoodwin,

Please open your own thread in the Avast Free/Pro/Suite forum section as to not confuse the OP or helpers with this thread.  We will help you there and that is the appropriate place for your post.  You can copy and paste what you have written here in your first post.  Thank you very much for your understanding.  :)

Hi SafeSurf & Skowy,

When I analyze Skowy's log, most things seem normal until I noticed certain entries near
the beginning of the log.
As examples, the 3 listed below would be normal entries for XP:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe

In the log supplied, the same entries show as below:

C:\WINXP\System32\smss.exe
C:\WINXP\system32\winlogon.exe
C:\WINXP\system32\services.exe

There are at least 3 more similar entries all beginning with C:\WINXP which seems incorrect
to me.
I do not know why these entries are as they are in the log but it appears something has
changed them.

The other 2 things which are relatively minor are no firewall shows in the HJT log (XP firewall will
not show) and this entry:

O2 - BHO: WormRadar.com IESiteBlocker.NavFilter - {3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0}
- (no file)
Unnecessary (deactivated) entry that can be fixed and is related to LinkScanner.

I hope this helps.

@ Safesurf

Sorry but I thought this was the correct thread AIS = Avast Internet Security.  Which is what I'm attempting to trial.

I'm not running the free version.  It's the full version in trial mode, which is free for 30 days.

hi

what do you think it means?

C:\WINXP\System32\smss.exe
C:\WINXP\system32\winlogon.exe
C:\WINXP\system32\services.exe

There are at least 3 more similar entries all beginning with C:\WINXP which seems incorrect
to me.

question;
do you think this is a result of the new motherboard installed?

do you think its because of the reinstalled software? (I'm not sure what is required when you replace a motherboard, or what the consequences are when you reformat a computer"

what questions should i ask the tech guys who did the reformat or motherboard install? is the problem really this deep?  ???

I'd like you to run some tests on your machine and I'm going to have one of our Certified Malware Experts, Essexboy, take a look your logs after you post all of them.  In the meantime, we will still be here to provide you with help.

Part 1:

Check your computer for malware with Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware (MBAM).
·   Download free http://www.malwarebytes.org/ (http://www.malwarebytes.org/) for an on-demand scanner.
·   Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
·   After install, click update so you have latest database before scanning.
·   Under Settings:
o   General: Automatically Save File After Scan Completes is checked off
o   Scanner SettingsCheck all boxes
o   Updater: Download and install update if available is checked off
·   Once the program has loaded, select "Perform FULL Scan", then click Scan.
·   The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
·   When the disinfection scan is complete, a log will appear in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note).
·   Click the “remove selected” button to quarantine anything found.  You will find the infection details under the Quarantine tab.
·   The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
·   Copy & Paste the entire report in your next reply.

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts -- Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process; If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Part 2:

Check the information on the first post of this thread under Virus/Worms for you to check your machine for malware: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0 (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0).

Follow the directions of obtaining the OTL logs.  Post the two (2) OTL log as an attachment (Additional Options > Attach > Browse (the logs will be on your desktop > Post).  After you post your logs, then Essexboy will analyze your logs and give you further instructions in this thread; please follow his instructions as he may be doing additional testing.  After posting your logs, please do not make any changes to your machine or this will change your logs.  Thank you.

Let me know if you have any questions in the meantime.  I will also be here while Essexboy is with you but in the background as to not interfere.  Thank you.

Hi lets use a different variant - you also state you have re-installed windows, was it a full install or a parallel install ?

Download OTS (http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTS.exe) to your Desktop and double-click on it to run it
Reg - NetSvcs
Reg - Shell Spawning
Evnt - EventViewer Logs (Last 10 Errors)
File - Lop Check
File - Purity Scan

Title: Re: CANT ACCESS INTERNET using avast AIS 5
Post by: Skowy on September 29, 2010, 11:55:10 AM
what would this mean - and would it apply to this error?

Check your firewall configuration. For the correct operation the Web Shield process (ashWebSv.exe or aswWebSv.exe) needs a permission to access the Internet on TCP port 80 and a permission to act as a server and accept incoming connections from localhost (the local machine) on TCP port 12080.
Title: Re: CANT ACCESS INTERNET using avast AIS 5
Post by: essexboy on September 29, 2010, 09:02:09 PM
Looks like a parallel install was done, data transfered and the old windows deleted, hence winxp as your windows folder

The only thing I can see is remnants of AVG and Norton - this will clear them.  What problems if any are you experiencing ?

Start OTS. Copy/Paste the information in the quotebox below into the panel where it says "Paste fix here" and then click the Run Fix button.

Quote
[Unregister Dlls]
[Registry - Safe List]
< BHO's [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE] > -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\
YN -> {3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0} [HKLM] -> Reg Error: Value error. [AVG Safe Search]
< Internet Explorer ToolBars [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE] > -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ToolBar
YN -> "Locked" [HKLM] -> Reg Error: Key error. [Reg Error: Key error.]
< Standard Profile Authorized Applications List > -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess\Parameters\FirewallPolicy\StandardProfile\AuthorizedApplications\List
YY -> "C:\Documents and Settings\Scott\Local Settings\Temp\7zS8D.tmp\SymNRT.exe" -> C:\Documents and Settings\Scott\Local Settings\Temp\7zS8D.tmp\SymNRT.exe [C:\Documents and Settings\Scott\Local Settings\Temp\7zS8D.tmp\SymNRT.exe:*:Enabled:Norton Removal Tool]
[Custom Items]
:Files
ipconfig /flushdns /c
:end
[Empty Temp Folders]
[EmptyFlash]
[CreateRestorePoint]

The fix should only take a very short time. When the fix is completed a message box will popup telling you that it is finished. Click the Ok button and Notepad will open with a log of actions taken during the fix.  Post that information back here

I will review the information when it comes back in.

essexboy - i am really "freaking out" i  ran the program fix but an error box popped up and the only prompt option i had was to click continue, so i clicked it, now its been an hour and the OTS fix seems stuck on [Create restore point] is an hour normal?

man i know it could take you hours to respond because of the time zone difference, so i will leave it until something happens...really freaking me out;

the program doesn't look frozen because there is a flicker of an hourglass every now and again and the mouse pointer moves across the screen -

what do i do?

(a) close the program and start again
(b) leave it running...But, for how long?

okay - not freaking out now the program has ended and stated " system needs to reboot" so i rebooted it - But there was no window that popped up as a notebook containing a file?

do i redo it?

Its 3:25a.m. in the UK, so essexboy will be tucked up in bed now, so it will have to await essexboy's return. However, given this was a specific fix to get rid of remnants of AVG and Norton and it appears to have completed successfully (other than no notepad report), I wouldn't have though it would need to be rerun.

As essexboy asked, "What problems if any are you experiencing" ?
If you have anything to report post it now so he can see it when he returns.

the problem - I cannot access the internet via any web browsers [Mozilla] - [IE] - [ Google chrome] unless, i disable the webshield then avast allows connectivity....

I think that the hope was after removing remnants of previous AVs it would break any potential conflict allowing you to connect.

Since it's avast!'s own firewall that you will be using, no you don't need to create a rule for webshield. It's allready there and allowed.

Yes now would be a good idea to reinstall AIS.

Perhaps the OP should hold off on reinstalling AIS until Essexboy is done uninstalling his tools.  He has a routine, which I'm used to seeing, and I do not believe he is done yet, nor given the OP the "Spring CleanUp."  He should be back to the forum soon.

@ Skowy, Please hold off on reinstalling AIS until Essexboy is done with everything as I posted above.  OK?  Thank you for your patience as we try to get everything fixed and working for you again.

It is unrelated as the ashWebSv.exe was the old 4.8 process of the Web Shield (not in avast 5.0). The avast 5.0 resident shields all come under the control of the avastSvc.exe process.

it states [windows was unable to find a certificate to log you on to the network]

If you mean you can't download combofix, why not download it on the laptop and copy to a CD and transfer to the PC. The reason I suggest copy to a CD is if your system were to be infected it could infect any USB you connect or if you used the network to transfer from the notebook to the PC.

OK I now think we can rule out malware - so we are looking at a system problem now.  Now we need to determine why webshield is not allowed to go through the firewall

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations.

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset  System Restore points:

Run OTL

Click Start > Run  and copy/paste the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:

ComboFix /Uninstall

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button.  It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.  MBAM can be uninstalled via control panel add/remove along with ERUNT.  But they may be useful tools to keep

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that

SPRING CLEAN

Download and run Puran Disc Defragmenter (http://www.puransoftware.com/Puran-Defrag-Download.html)

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes: It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read our little guide  How did I get infected in the first place ? (http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/topic/225044-preventing-malware-and-safe-computing/)

Skowy did you mess around with the fw settings ? Look at essexboy's screenshot and tell us if it looks the same on your end. And do another screenshot. This time go to FIREWALL LOGS and select show log for CONNECTIONS(not show log for activity but show log for connections ok ?). Take a screenshot of that and show it to us. If the firewall is blocking webshield it will look something like this:

What happens NOW? :o

(a) do we all give up go to the pub and get hammered
(b) Do i get a full refund but keep the 24 month subscription and service because the web shield doesn't work?

if it is NOT the computer or the operating system NOT malware related then what is it?  ???

would i need to purchase another avast AIS 5 to see if its related toooooo blaaaaahhhhhhhhhh  :P

The third [Avast! antivirus update]

The forth [Avast! Firewall service]

it doesn't appear the same as your label headings?

@Skowy: Just looked at your OTL logs. I noticed you are running Uniblue PowerSuite. That software messes alot with your system, can you go inside that program and restore back whatever the program did to "optimize" your pc ? It should have some sort of a roll back feature.

And you have an outdated version of Java installed aswell. Might want to update that.

EDIT: Had an even better look at your logs and here is what i found...

Are you running a LEGIT version of avast! ? Cause i am not so sure about that anymore. I ask because you are running a pirated copy of Adobe Photoshop CS 4. You have entries in you hosts file that block access to Adobe's activation servers. The only reason one would do that is if they are using a pirated serial key which would be blocked if you were to allow Photoshop to connect to adobe's activation servers. So you just block access to those activation servers via the hosts file and Photoshop doesn't know it is using a pirated serial and activation key. Oh and i just checked your mbam log aswell.

C:\Documents and Settings\Scott\My Documents\office\Programs\Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended\Adobe CS4 Activation Patch\Adobe CS4 Keygen.exe (Trojan.Downloader) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

That said, i am not posting here anymore. I refuse to help someone that is running pirated software. Have a nice day and consider yourself lucky that i don't report you to Adobe.

M416 - thank you for your observations, i attached the Avast invoice as proof of purchase;

You accuse me of pirated software in my PC, if your right then I want it out of my PC, i personally don't use photoshop - but i don't need to explain to you how i suspect its installation - what you can do is tell me the best way to get rid of it? do i go to control panel and then uninstall or is more elaborate?

I recently purchased registry booster and your saying its better to get rid of it? if that is causing my computer issues then do i uninstall it from control panel?

I want my computer clean and SECURE, I opened my PC up to everyone here to solve an avast problem do you really think i would do that knowing there is pirated software in the PC and if avast is not going to allow browser connectivity because of it then what am i going to rip out and How?

Well ok now that you provided proof that you are a legit user and let's say i believe you didn't install that Photoshop cracked edition yourself. Though still, it had to be downloaded to your pc and installed by someone. If anyone else is using your computer ask them to please not download that sort of stuff, it's illegal to use pirated software...

Remove the Photoshop install and crack you have in this folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\Scott\My Documents\office\Programs\Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended\

If you still have Photoshop installed, remove it via control panel(add/remove).

Remove these entries from your hosts file. You'll find the hosts file under C:\WINXP\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
You can use HijackThis to edit the hosts file aswell... http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html#HTHostsManager

As for Uniblue software. That messes around with windows system settings, registry entries and who knows what else. It could be it changed some critical setting somewhere causing you problems. Like i said it should have some sort of a roll-back feature to restore your system state to what it was before Uniblue "optimized" it.

Quote Direct from the uniblue support desk

How can I undo changes made by Uniblue programs?

Uniblue programs allow you to undo major changes.

For RegistryBooster, to restore your registry, open RegistryBooster and click on the Restore tab. Select the restore point you would like to revert to and click Restore. Then restart your computer.

Please note that  any changes made to your computer after the restore point was set would be lost.

and or

You can also use Windows System Restore to restore your computer's configuration to the state it was in before installing our products.

Hmmm good questions. I have to go back and re-read the thread but a quick look a few pages back i see that essexboy had you reset your hosts file(that is why there were no entries for adobe's servers there anymore), purge system restore points , empty temp locations etc.

Also he had you remove some reg entries that were apparently leftovers from other AV's. So no i wouldn't restore the registry back. And since the windows system restore points were also deleted you can't go that route either.

We need to consult with essexboy first before proceeding...

Skowy from your AIS log that you showed us it doesn't appear that the avast! fw is blocking but just to make sure about that, can you temporarily stop the firewall(open avast! and under firewall settings click stop) and try to browse online with the webshield enabled ? I wanna make double sure that it's not avast! firewall doing the blocking. After you tested this re-enable the firewall.

LAPTOP allows outbound access to the internet on port 80

PC allows outbound access to the internet and inbound access to friends

Yeah the rules are the same on my end so that is fine. Infact on my end it just says avast antivirus for all those rules. You need to highlight the rule and click file details below to actually see for what process those rules are.

Anyway Skowy, we alerted the avast team to your issue, hopefully we get a reply soon.

Hi Skowy,

does turning off the avast firewall solve the problem? Are you able to browse with webshield enabled and firewall turned off?

Edit: We should first find out what component is the problematic one. So the first step is to rule out the firewall. So please try it with firewall disabled. If it works, we might try to tune the firewall, if it does not help, leave it turned off, and we can try to find out other offending part. To me it seems that something on your system (and it seems it has already seen quite a lot) is messing with the redirect feature in avast! that is used both by WebShield and MailShield. Don't understand however, how tuning down the heuristics sensitivy might help though.

Ok I havent read the entire thread since I'm usually busy on sunday nights, anyways this sounds much like the same problem I encounter'd, I had to disable all avast services to get internet access on google chrome and uninstallation is the only way to get things working on Internet Explorer.

Happen'd right after I upgraded to Avast! 5 today, pro trial.

No, there is no connectivity when enabling the webshield and disabling the firewall - Connectivity to the internet is only via disabling the webshield all other services are functional

I tuned the heuristics sensitivity down in the mailshield and the mail services work BUT, when applied to the webshield it did not work

This issue has been going on for a month now without resolution. The problem sounds very similar to what I recommended at reply #136. I wouldn't be surprised if it did solve the problem. If it doesn't work then it doesn't work. I recommend giving it a try though.

I'm a little perplexed by this. Have you or have you not run the Winsock fix? I don't see where http://majorgeeks.com/WinSock_XP_Fix_d4372.html takes you to Registry Mechanic. Make sure you don't download the "recommended download" advertisement. Websites are tricky like that. These recommendations are for free versions. There are many free versions that are just as capable as paid versions. I wouldn't keep spending money on utility software to try to fix your problem(s) to find out it didn't solve the problem. So please doublecheck that you downloaded WinSock XP Fix 1.2 (which is free) and try running it if you haven't already done so.

@ Skowy,

I'm really glad things are working out now.  :D :D :D  You have been through a lot!  If your machine needs to speed up during boot time, check under CCleaner (or another site) for Start Up to see what programs are booting up.  If there is anything that is not essential (needed) for boot up, or you only need it for on-demand, you can change the setting to "disable" (do not delete it).

There were recent issues that came up on the forum with a few others regarding the WinsockFix utility, so I'm glad you ran it and it fixed your system.

You do not need Registry Mechanic with everything else that you have on your system, which we suggested to you and was free.  What are you using now in place of your FW?

If you want, you can list your security software and we can see if we need to trim it down for you or you can leave it as it is until you are comfortable.  Make sure you create a NEW system restore point now that your machine is working correctly.  Let me know if you have any questions.  Thank you and I'm very happy for you. :D

2.   What version of Avast did you install?  5.0.677?
3.   What product of Avast did you install?  Free, Pro, AIS?
4.   What other security software do you currently have or did you have in the past on this machine including antivirus (AV), firewall (FW), and other security programs?  If they were in the past, how did you remove them (the vendor's uninstaller's tool or another way)?
5.    How do you connect to the Internet?
6.    The issue(s) you are currently experiencing, when it occurred, and what you have done to troubleshoot (example disable firewall and reset, malware scans, etc.).

Thank you very much.  :)

CheryB - Yes I finally downloaded the correct Winsockfix utility for free and ran it but it did not work.

You see the link at the base of the attached image that is what i clicked but it goes to registry mechanic and when downloaded and run you need to pay to fix the errors it identifies.

the correct link for the download for the winsockfix is http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=4372&file=15&evp=4578a0d2691013178f302c260093894b

Hello all,

I was having the same problem as most of you after installing Asvast 5 (couldn't connect; couldn't update; firefox connected to the net while IE wouldn't, blah, blah blah).  I am running Vista 32 SP2, having had at one point or another: Mcafee, Comodo and Zone Alarm and, thanks to alot of you and your advice, I got all the uninstallers I could find to clear up any traces of said former FW's/AV's.  YET STILL, I couldn't connect to the net through IE or update Avast.
Not sure if this will work for you but after having read countless forums and spending 3 DAYS trying to fix this (the Avast AV rating's just couldn't be pasted up-and for free) I found this little , itty bity thing that let Avast connect (at least for me).
Purely by accident I went into: Network and sharing (my LAN settings); clicked on view status then properties and LOW AND BEHOLD, there was an old, old setting for comodo still there from 2 years ago I had no idea was still active.  Soon as I deleted it, Avast worked, updated (quite quickly I might add) the whole bit!
Again, not sure if this will work for any of you but I finally got it going!  THANKS to all of you for the advice on how to clean up old crap from my "puter".  I appreciated all I've read and plan on spreading the info wherever I can!

Good Luck,
Therobbie1
