I finally uninstalled Windows Media Player 11 this afternoon.
The uninstall rolled things back to Windows Media Player 9.
Question 1: Why can I NOT see Windows Media Player 9 as an App that can be uninstalled?
I checked with CCleaner and Revo Uninstaller and it doesn't show up in either.
NOW ... the Main Question: Now that I uninstalled Windows Media Player 11, there is of course still its sidekick Windows Media Format 11 Runtime still installed. What is this Windows Media Format 11 Runtime and can I uninstall it now that I have uninstalled Windows Media Player 11? Or is it used for something else and I have to keep it installed?

Strange I uninstalled Windows Media Player and I didn't have the Windows Media Format 11 Runtime installed, perhaps I didn't have Windows Media Player 11 installed but an earlier version.
However, I am still able to play .wmv clips through WinAmp 5.581.

It almost seems like a Bloat Scam. On my other computer, my Windows 98SE Gateway, I originally had Windows Media Player 9 and now have Windows Media Player 10 and I know I don't have Windows Media Format 11 Runtime in it. Yet both Windows Media Players have worked fine.
So, it begs the question: Would then Windows Media Format 11 Runtime be something exclusive to Windows XP? Is it even needed with Windows Media Player 9 and Windows Media Player 10 on a Windows XP computer when it's NOT needed on a Windows 98SE computer?
Would Media Player Classic, VLC Player, JetAudio and any other Media Players NEED Windows Media Format 11 Runtime on a Windows XP computer?
Very mysterious. I'll have to see if I can Google up something more solid on this.

I know that vlc does not need anything from any other format or runtime or additional codec's, every thing is self contained in one package.

Same goes for Winamp and jetAudio.

Jetaudio wasn't to bad when i tried it about 8 month's ago but the download file is 32meg which open's up to well over 100meg and you dont get that much in the free version either, it didn't have support for h264 then but it might now plus i found there video player was quite grainy , yes you get some recording software with it but the best recording software around is imgburn at only 4meg's. Winamp also not to bad a program for ipod tranfers and a better media player than jet but you still dont get high quality bitrate sampling unless you pay for pro, sorry if iv put a dampener on your fav's bob3160 but vlc is still a better program i feel that does just what it is supposed to do (play stuff) :)

Seem's like a good suite, you should check out imgburn it burns everything as perfect copys. I link imgburn into dvdfab to make backup copy's all my dvd's and to convert format's and make data cd's,dvd's.

DONE! With some trepidation, I threw the dice and uninstalled Windows Media Format 11 Runtime. I was informed that it rolled back to the previous Runtime version ... not that I was given an actual version number.
Nevertheless, I encountered no errors and everything's running fine. :)
