Do you get updates faster with the Pro version vs the free version?
Also are there any annoying "ads" in the free version?
What will I be missing if I use the free version vs the Pro version?
Thanks

avast! 5.0 comparison chart

Do you get updates faster with the Pro version vs the free version?
Faster? No. More frequent? Yes. The minimum intervals currently are like this: Free AV: 120 minutes ( = 2 hours) and Pro AV, IS: 15 minutes.
Also are there any annoying "ads" in the free version?
Annoying? No. In the interface (static button), yes.

So if Avast Pro gets a new update say at 9AM then Avast Free will not get that same update until 11AM? Is that correct?
Also in the chart it says with Avast pro it "Lets you safely browse suspicious websites or applications" What is this feature that is not in Free version?
Thanks for your help :)

idk if its true or just marketting, but the comparison chart says the pro version has faster updates

It will check for updates a short time after you turn on your comp and it detect connection, then at the specified intervalls that is sett ( can be adjusted, default is every 240min )

No.
avast checks if there is an available connection each 40 seconds.
If there isn't, wait more 40 seconds to check. Checking does not take more than one second and, of course, does not use the Internet band.
If there is a connection, check for an update. If there is not any new file to download, wait 4 hours to start checking again. If there is an available update, start it and install it. Again, wait 4 hours to check the next time.
Avast Free AV checks for updates every 4 hours. Avast Pro AV and IS check every 1 hour. The program already knows that the update is there, but it won't tell you until it's your turn. You have to allow the update, i.e., it's not a forced and automatic update. They also use 3rd party servers for updates distribution, combined with their huge network of standalone servers, to distribute the content from geographically close locations.
Also in the chart it says with Avast pro it "Lets you safely browse suspicious websites or applications" What is this feature that is not in Free version?
Script blocker? ???

"Faster" is what you, an user, achieve... you receive it faster as it checks for updates more frequently.

well then its written a little out of context, perhaps it should say "more frequent update checks" or something along those lines instead of faster updates which implies the updates download quicker
and the safe browsing thing im pretty sure means the sandbox

I would hate to become a pedantic. ;)

Well they are planning that the Pro version gets quantum updates or some such name (not just more frequent update checking every 15 minutes, etc.), effectively in real time in the future. I can't recall how this is achieved right now, but that obviously won't be available to the free version, they will have the same process of update checking.

can we use the free activation key for avast internet security?
if so how we can?
plz tell....
-
Absolutely not, as you have to pay for the avast internet security product it isn't free.
Even if it were somehow possibly do you believe that the official avast support site would tell you how to rob avast ???

You need to purchase avast! Internet Security.

if i remember correctly, the idea of quantum updates was ditched wasnt it?
-
If it had, I can't remember it or I wouldn't have mentioned it.

Sure. My fault.
Although I think on demand sandbox (not turned on by default) wouldn't be a safe boat to count with...

A project that was dropped down... I think for what I've read.

It will be for the paid version, but they didn't implement it and, I think, this was dropped.
Maybe they could say more about this.

Yes, the quantum updates are discontinued. It will be replaced by the cloud features.

Thanks Rednose,
Presumably, these Cloud update will no doubt be Pro/AIS version only to maintain differences from the free version.
-
Hi DavidR :)
Yeah, I edited my previous post because I thought my comment about quantum updates available in Avast! Free was indeed premature.
But it is not :
And the other good thing is that unlike the quantum updates, we expect the cloud will be accessible for the Free AV users as well

If the cloud is necessary for protection, I presume it will be on the free version also.
I hope so.
There are many other minor things that make up these changes (such as further emphasis on the Behavior Shield when making these heuristics decisions, i.e. taking into account full context info) but this is, at a glance, how it's going to work. What may be of special interest, also, is that this is how it's going to work even in the free version (which means that the core functionality of the sandbox will likely be moved to the free AV).

My comment relating to the cloud was if that was going to somehow be used for Pro updates (replacing quantum update feature) and not in relation to overall protection.
