Title: Avast Server (manged or un) Blocking Symantec BUE 12 from running
Post by: Wheaties on November 08, 2010, 06:31:26 PM
Anyone know what causes Symantec Backup Exec (12) to hang during backup when Avast Server is installed?

maybe trying to access same files during backup schedule
probably cuz of the nature of file access it doesnt use VSS at that point for AV and symantec cant backup and hangs ?

wpn sounds to be right, but your backup log should help you find out the exact cause.  Or at least tell you where it's hanging up.

I did check Symantec Backup log, and there were some glitches.  I fixed those but still to no avail.  It's not on my server, one of my customers.  They also have ADNM installed on that same server which happens to be the DC as well, so rebooting often is not an option.  Really odd.  As soon as Avast Server is uninstalled Symantec BUE runs fine.

Any other ideas?  I also excluded BUE directory from the scan list....

its not the BUE directory that is PROBABLY the locking issue... its having them run together...

if you disable avast services (not uninstalling) does the backup run then??
then its for sure that you got file access clashes

talking about htat, did you configure BUE to use VSS??

We did try disabling all services actually and still didn't work.  Only worked once it was removed and server rebooted.

I can't believe I didn't think of Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS), that is what you are talking about right?  Within BUE.....

I will check that out and get back to you......EXCELLENT IDEA!!!
