Title: Avast 5.0.677 unable to update!
Post by: bigspanner on November 25, 2010, 02:16:09 PM
I've just upgraded from version 4 to version 5.0.677

However, I'm unable to update both the Engine and Virus Definitions as well as to Update Program.

It shows:- Error: Cannot Connect to Server.

My internet connection is broadband and it is working fine.

When I am at the avast! user interface, it tells me: SECURED. your system is fully protected.

But at the system tray, when I hover my mouse over the orange avast icon, it says: Attenton, your system is not fully protected.

Can an Avast expert please assist me?

Thanks!

Commonly this is your firewall blocking the update process.

What is your firewall ?
Does it allow avast.setup internet access ?
- If it does delete the entry for it and do a manual update, this should force the firewall to ask permission again.

Re, the message on the avast icon, when does this happen and does it go away soon after ?
When the message is there is there a Red X or a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark ?
If so left click on the avast tray icon and it will open the avastUI, tell us what isn't running ?

Hi DavidR,

I previously use Online Armour but had since completely uninstalled it as I find most firewalls more problematic than useful. My PC is behind a router and I'll let my router act as a basic firewall. Having said that, my Windows XP Firwall is active.

Do I need to whitelist Avast IP address with the Windows Firewall?

I upgraded from Version 4 to version 5 by clicking the Avast Notification that came up when I started my PC. I did not download it from Avast and then install. It was downloaded and installed automatically after I clicked the Avast Notification page.

The message on the Avast icon is always there and always remain the same when I mouse over. There is no Red X or a yellow trianalge with an exclamation mark.

All the services are running. Here is the screenshot: http://oi54.tinypic.com/vgtqxj.jpg

Hi Asyn,

I've changed the setting from Auto Detect (Use Internet Explorer Settings) to Direct Connection and then tried to the update. It seems to be able to update by downloading its files but then Connection Terminated, Retry and then it will download some files and then the same Connection Terminated, Retrying starts all over again. The Overall Progress does not seem to progress in its bar at all. Everytime when there is a Connection Terminated, Retrying, the progress bar goes back to starting point.

Is this the norm when doing an Avast Update or is something not set properly?

By the way, after setting the direct connection, the Avast Icon now is showing: Your System is Secured.

If there's nothing to update right now, this is normal.

Hi,

I've encountered another strange problem and not sure if it should be in this thread or if I should start another thread.

Well, after the updating problem is solved, I shut-down my PC.

Now that I have turned on my PC again, I saw the system tray icon of Avast showing this:

avast! Antivirus: WARNING, your system is UNSECURED.

Can an expert please tell me why this is so when it showed "SECURED. Your system is fully protected" when I'm inside the Avast UI?

Relating to the change of the proxy setting - If you can't update and your virus signatures are out of date then that could trigger the unsecured tooltip.

I asked 3 questions about this in my first reply, so I suggest you re-read it again as that information will help us to help you.

Any slight delay in loading some of the avast processes would give that tooltip, but as I said the delay might be short and when you open the avastUI they have already loaded.

Hi DavidR,

I've already answered your 3 questions.

Asyn had solved the update issue, anyway.

My Avast virus definition is up to date now and the program is also up to date.

But this UNSECURED WARNING at the system tray is contrary to what within AvastUI is saying, which is that my system is fully protected. This is what I like to solve now.

Restart your system.
Wait 2 minutes.
Solved..?

Check all the shields, maybe one of your shield is disabled.

you can right click the avast ball > avast! shields control > enable 7 protection ;)

but this thing can be corrected in simple reboot.

Regards!!!

Hi,

I rebooted my system.
After that, took a look at the system tray for the Avast Icon.
Mouse over and this is what I see:

avast! Antivirus: Attention, your system is not fully protected.

The icon is orange color, with no other exclamation marks or whatever.
It is spinning.

I right-click the icon and look at avast! shields control.
The menu line that is grayed says "All shields are on".

Within Avast UI, I go through all the 7 shields and confirm that all 7 shields are running.

What exactly is happening? Please advise.

Within the AvastUI, it says : SECURED. Your system is fully protected.

But when mouseover at the system tray icon, it says "Your system not fully protected".

Look at avast! shields control > to see if All shields are on.

What is your operating system and Service Pack level?

What is your system CPU and speed and ammount of RAM?

Yes, both ENGINE AND VIRUS DEFINITIONS as well as PROGRAM are set to Automatic Update.

Go to: Settings - Status Bar
See, if anything is checked, that is not installed/running at your system.
Maybe post a screenshot, if you are not sure...

All the 7 services are turned on.
The Status Bar has ALL the monitored items ticked.
The AvastUI says system is fully protected.

But the system tray says otherwise.

So, this is what I did. I turned off one of the services. In this case, I turned off File System Shield.

Immediately, Windows Firewall prompts me saying "My Computer is At Risk. My Anti-virus is not updated".

So, I turned back on the service File System Shield.

Then I looked again at the system tray icon by mousing over it.

It says: avast1 Antivirus: Your system is secured.

So my guess it is a program bug.

Thanks, everyone for helping.

1. So my guess it is a program bug.
2. Thanks, everyone for helping.

1. Usually a restart should fix this, but sometimes you need to wait for the next autoupdate to get this fixed...
2. You're welcome..!

Hi Asyn,

I think it is already fixed. By turning off any of the services and then turning it back on, my guess is that this refreshes the icon message shown when mouseover. Why it is behaving like that, only the program knows.

Now, it is showing "Your system is secured", which is similar to the message shown in the AvastUI interface.

So, thanks for raising the issue of the status bar to my attention which makes me think that most likely I need to turn off and on some services, to refresh the user interface and it worked.
