Title: standard scan
Post by: spats on July 11, 2003, 01:01:03 AM
Greetings from a brand new member!

I'm a complete novice at this computer lark as you'll be able to tell from my question.
I've just installed avast and didn't find it at all easy; the directions given in "Internet Made Easy" sounded ridiculously simple but then so did all the stuff in the "for dummies" books.
However, here goes:
I've attempted a standard scan which seemed to be OK. It took about 90 minutes and resulted in 36409 files tested with zero infection. Great!
The avast interface shows the date of last scan as "Not done yet"
I was just starting to get some confidence!!!
Have I got to do it all over again?
Please help :'(
Thanks a lot.

spats,

Welcome to the forum.  Don't worry about being a novice.  We can teach you what you need to know.

Firstly, You stated that you just installed Avast.  What build of Avast are you using?  If you are not sure, right click on the A ball in the tray.  Go to About.  Up on top it will give you the version which will should read "build June 2003, 4.0.235.  If you did not update Avast after installation or if it did not prompt you that a program update was available, then you are working with an older build which might contain some "bugs".  At this point, I would right click on the A ball in the tray....go to Updating.....and click Program update.
This will update your version to the latest build, and at the same time update the database.  (Program updates always will update the virus database whereas Database updates will only do the db)

Rerun your standard scan, setting AVAST to the STANDARD scan... Thorough... and scan Archives.
To do this, go back to the Main interface.  Left click on the drive icon next to the Resident Protection. This brings up a new window where you can move the "slider" to change it to Thorough and also check Scan Archive files.

This is a peculair behavior for Avast.  So let's get things current and try the scan again.  If this does not work, then a corrupted file somewhere within the program could be the culprit.

Do not uninstall Avast at this time!

OK?
 ;)

Hello and thanks for your prompt reply!
I've done as you suggested and all seems well.
I'm working on a IBM thinkpad with windows 98SE as my PC is being repaired after being seriously infected!
My first task is to make sure that this doesn't happen again and so I'm placing my faith in Avast!
I'm starting by kicking out a lot of downloaded stuff like kazaa!!!!! (which I think has caused some trouble too).
I would like to defragment my disk also but whenever I try to start the operation everything freezes and I have to do a ctrl-alt-sup. I can't imagine what the problem is? Any ideas?
Also, do you think that I can place total confidence in Avast and remove the other anti-vius software? V-shield, Norton.
Thanks again for your kind attention.
regards
