The only firewall I have came with my Windows Vista. And I want to know if that is enough or should I get something better? If I need something better which one? All my software I download from cnet.com and I like "free". Any suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Please take note of what I have by looking at my signature. I am not much of a computer "geek" so it has to be easy to set-up and use. I am looking at Comodo and others which is best?

Hi Para-Noid :)
As you are using the Windows Vista Firewall, maybe this article from Stem is interesting for you :

ZoneAlarm Free (http://www.filehippo.com/download_zonealarm_free/)
or
Windows 7 Firewall Control 4.0 (http://majorgeeks.com/Windows_7_Firewall_Control_d5578.html) Works on Vista, too.
-
Thank you Rednose for the article, which is very good. I've done beta testing with Stem. If you look at my Signature, I use Avast Free, but you can also use Online Armor Free and layer your protection.
As was suggested I believe in a previous thread, I would get rid of Ad-aware and replace it with MBAM which has higher detection rates free http://www.malwarebytes.org/ (http://www.malwarebytes.org/) (the blue button).
The key to security is to layer your software so you are not causing conflicts or over kill. Therefore, I suggest that you trial what ever FW software to see how you like it and how it plays with your other software; not all software play well together.
-
You can also try Comodo :)
-
Hi Para-Noid, i would suggest doing as SafeSurf has mentioned. If you dont want the full avast suite which come's with a firewall then online armor is an excellent choice, very intuitive and strong with a great hip's.
-
In my personal opinion:
Comodo (http://www.filehippo.com/download_comodo/)
Online Armour (http://www.tallemu.com/free-firewall-protection-software.html)
Outpost Firewall Free (http://www.filehippo.com/download_outpost_firewall/)

For Vista Windows 7 Firewall Control works quite well:

Second choice would be Outpost Firewall Free

I haven't had any problem YoKenny

YoKenny don't start flaming this crap about Comodo I've had enough their has been no problem in the latest v5.0, however Comodo has admit their was a minor mistake in v4.0 which has cause a lot problem in MOST computers not all of them and it all depends how the user installed Comodo correctly and the settings. The latest version hasn't cause any problems so far because Comodo had more time to resolved a lot of issued before v5.0 came out, so it okay to install Comodo ONLY the firewall package not the Comodo Internet Security package.

Thanks SpeedyPC

As a free stand alone firewall Privatefirewall (http://www.privacyware.com/personal_firewall.html) is a good choice. And paid Online Armor Premium (http://www.online-armor.com/products-online-armor-premium.php) :)

I've been using Comodo firewall with Avast for over 1 year, and I am more than happy. No problems at all.

Use CIS 5 (complete suite) without any other security application. Or avast! with Windows Firewall or another light firewall. Right now I'm testing CIS 5 (without any other security application) and so far is working well, and the best of all, no slowdowns.
Is your decision.

I am glad to hear :) It's stable, solid and secure. FP come (a part of the contract ;D ;)) but that's better than having a malware.
CIS 5 is everything you need in case you have no wish to combine AV with different firewall. I don't find CIS 5/2011 hard. If you have problems and you don't know what to do then it's good to follow CIS 5/2011 hints.

Best thing to do is to sit behind a router, or some other hardware firewall or a UTM appliance. I use a software firewall to monitor outbound connections. I wouldn't use a software firewall in lieu of hardware firewall but I rather use it in conjunction with it. As for Comodo I never liked it, very bloated for my tastes and the logging is non existent...at least when I tried it.

Never did trust a person that can't figure out how to keep their PROFILE up to date.
Please go to PROFILE then Modify Profile then Forum Profile Information then select your country in Please select your country: then update your Signature: with information like my signature as this helps the helpers offer pertinent advice.
I guess that's why you are lethal on the street. ???

Don't troll.I know how to update it, I don't really care about it.
You have a profile, doesn't mean anything to me.
Regardless of your baseless paranoia, what I stated in my last post is an opinion. If you don't trust it...who cares. It's not like i'm sitting here selling opinions. Better yet do some research on what I stated instead of worrying if I have a profile and a ridiculous avatar.

@ street_lethal
You seem to be very young and need to learn a lot.
Question:
How old are you ???
You seem like a know it all 15 year old or a frustrated 30 year old that realizes they do not know very much.
Which is it. ???

Go argue with somebody else. I don't have the motivation or interest to go back and forth with you about profiles and who you trust or don't trust. Nobody cares.

Typical 15 year old response. ::)

YoKenny brought up a inane issue he had with me not having a profile. He then proceeded to prattle on about nothing which is what was confusing.

he found your comment, just as I did, a bit off topic.
1)Almost all modern router have firewall and the info that you say is quite advanced which is strange; that comes from someone who has no info about himself, no signatures.
2) Even if your router has a firewall it's recommended to have a software firewall.
I have no intention to offend you or to argue with you.

Who's he? And who's comment was a bit off topic?
My post that you quoted is straight forward, I wouldn't just use a software firewall. I would use a hardware firewall also, a router, a dedicated firewall, a UTM appliance, etc....Some people just use a hardware firewall.
Also, many consumer routers have extremely watered down dedicated firewall features but act as a firewall due to NAT.
Me having a profile has zero bearing on anything and was off topic. If some people care about profiles that's great, some people don't.
-
for me it's indifferent.
cheers :)

Good Evening ! A topical issue...I just finished auditioning over the past three months Private Firewall...P.C.Tools Firewall Version 7...and Sunbelt's Premium Firewall which is integrated as a suite component with it's Vipre Premium Suite...and the winner is Windows 7. Runs like a top with my Avast Pro Anti-Virus and Prevx 3.0 with Safe On Line. In all fairness, in my opinion they all performed extremely well with Windows 7. It's a great time for consumers everywhere...so much choice...and quality. Take them all for a test ride. Enjoy! Sincerely...Zron
