Title: [Resolved] Manual file scan issue
Post by: buckeyered on December 03, 2010, 06:52:09 PM
When I manually scan a file I get the file scan screen that shows the scan
progress but it shows the same file being scanned three times instead of once.
I just noticed this recently because of it was taking longer to scan a file.
I am using the home free edition with Win7 home premium 64-bit.

Hi buckeyered, welcome to the forum :)

Is it a specific file, or is it just generally?

I have the same setup (win7 64 avast! free) and when I scan a file (e.g. a text file) it scans it only once.

It could also depend on the type of file, as some files contain multiple files, if that makes sense...for example, an installation file for a program will have more than one file contained within it.

yes the scan completes, it scans one file three times and the completion percentage is different on all three scans until all three complete.

text and nfo files scan once, exe, avi, mkv and some others all scan the same file 3 times simultaneously.

Can you give an example of a file that it scans repeatedly?
Also, how do you mean it scans  times? (is it shown three times, does the counter list it three times, does it open three windows? etc.)

Here is a screen cap of what I am talking about.

A. How long has this problem been going on for?
B. Is the rest of Avast working properly?
C. Is your machine acting normally?

1. Did you recently upgrade from a different version of Avast or a different product of Avast?

2. Did you have other antivirus, firewall, or other security software on this machine in the past?

If the answer to questions 1 - 2 above are "no," then please do an Avast Repair:
- Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > Avast Antivirus.
- Scroll down and choose Repair function in the pop-up window.
- Reboot.

Let us know if this fixes your problem, and reply to questions A - C above.  Thank you.

@ 12-es_csaj,

Same here.
But not always.
Are you having the same issue as the OP and having 3 scan logs (as in the screen shot) as well?  If not, please start a New Topic of your own as this will just confuse the current thread and we will help you there.  Go to this link, http://forum.avast.com/index.php (http://forum.avast.com/index.php), scroll down to the Avast Free/Pro/Suite forum and click it, click the New Topic button at the top of the list and post there.  Thank you.

Yes, the same issue.
I wrote my post only to confirm that it is an existing, real problem; not unique; and this happened to me, too.

Started about a month ago.
Everything else in Avast works fine.
PC bogs down when manually scanning larger files because it scans three times, fine otherwise.
I do regular update checks but don't remember the last program update that I have done, just virus data.
PC had AVG at one time but Avast worked fine after changing.
I tried repair but the problem remains.
Thanks for the help

@ buckeyered,

Check your computer for malware with Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware (MBAM).
·   Download free http://www.malwarebytes.org/ (http://www.malwarebytes.org/) (the blue button) for an on-demand scanner.
·   Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
·   After install, click update so you have latest database before scanning.
·   Under Settings:
o   General: Automatically Save File After Scan Completes is checked off
o   Scanner SettingsCheck all boxes
o   Updater: Download and install update if available is checked off
·   Once the program has loaded, select "Perform FULL Scan", then click Scan.
·   The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
·   When the disinfection scan is complete, a log will appear in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note).
·   Click the “remove selected” button to quarantine anything found.  You will find the infection details under the Quarantine tab.
·   The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
·   Copy & Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Thank you.

I just remembered I updated my file manager (free commander) around a month ago so I just tried
using explorer and avast scans the normal amount of times and then try the same file scan with
free commander and I get the triple scan. Sorry to post this as a problem with avast as it has something to do with the file manager used. Thanks for the help.
P.S. Can anyone recommend a free file manager that wont cause the duplicate scans?

@ buckeyered,

At least you were able to figure out the cause of the problem.  I have asked the Avast Team to see if this is a known or new issue.  Could you please produce a mini-dump file when you have the problem:

Here is additional information on how to invoke a memory dump file:  http://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=71 (http://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=71).

Please, zip and upload the C:\Windows\Memory.dmp file to this anonymous ftp server and name it uniquely: ftp.avast.com/incoming (http://ftp.avast.com/incoming).  Avast will analyze it and respond back to you in this thread or to your email.

After doing this, I would not use the software causing the issue for now.  Should you hear anything back by email from Avast, please post your response here in the thread so we can learn about it.  Otherwise Avast will post a reply in the thread so we can all learn.  Thank you.

Stick with Windows Explorer

Running free commander will cause problems on Windows 7 as it is designed for XP.

Sorry, I had already uninstalled free commander before reading the post on how to do the bug report dump file.
The program never crashed. After removing free commander I installed xyplorer as my file manager and it works fine with avast.
Thanks
