I don't understand why avast 5.1.677 is available to download but not on software update. It wants to uninstall the older version of avast 5.0.677 snd I don't know if I should. I will loose all my settings if i uninstall.

I looked all over the web "no" 5.1...yet. I found a lot of "5.1.677" but no real 5.1. Can you say, "oops". 5.1 is not, I repeat, is not out yet. Someone is pulling someone's leg. Ya think?

Indeed, there is no Avast! 5.1 yet. But ... biting on my tongue, because I am not allowed to tell ... we are close to a Avast! 5.1 BETA, and NOT a RELEASE as some forum members think. In fact we are very very close to it ;)

The 5.1 beta will most likely be posted here on Monday (i.e. tomorrow).
It will contain only some of the new stuff I was talking about - with the rest being included in the v6 beta that will follow in about 1 month. At least that's the plan for now.
BTW yes, the 5.1.677 package is a red herring - that is, it's identical to the original 5.0.677 with the new virus defs bundled with it. It's not the real v5.1.

But this "incorrectly labeled package" installs version 5.0.677 and the setup file is 2 MB bigger:
setup_av_free_eng.exe v5.0.677.0 (41,6 MB)
setup_av_free_eng.exe v5.1.677.0 (43,7 MB)
So what this "versions" mess and these extra 2 MB are supposed to mean? That the "new" version 5.1.677.0 has some hidden features avast developers are not so willing to tell the audience or it is an inadvertent mistake and the "new" version continues to stay available for download for about four weeks already ? No explanation.

What a mystery ;)
The installation packages were refreshed to include a newer version of virus definitions (so that less data is downloaded during the first virus definitions update) - that's all. That's the moment the incorrect version info got in... and we don't think it's such a big deal to revert it back (since the versions are already prepared for avast! 5.1, it would require some effort to do that).
