Title: aswndis2.sys BSOD after updating PerfectDisk 11 pro to SP4 build 182
Post by: wonderwrench on December 06, 2010, 03:24:46 AM
I have been running Avast 5 IS and Raxco PerfectDisk 11 pro on my main box for months without a problem. Yesterday I received an email from Raxco stating they had released SP4 build 182 of perfectDisk 11. I updated PD11 though the programs GUI and thought all was well, until I rebooted that is. I receive a BSOD on boot naming aswndis2.sys as the culprit. Each boot I receive the same BSOD. I have never had a BSOD on this box before and was kinda shocked. After some thought I remembered I had updated PD so I uninstalled it and problem solved. So it would seem PD and Avast have a compatibility problem. I posted over on Raxco's forum and received this reply "Bsod are caused by hardware issue or faulty driver- in this case it sounds like avast driver has a bug. Pd can not cause a driver to have a bug- however pd may be doing something that is bring this bug in avast to light. Raxco can not fix the avast driver- only avast can fix. Please forward the dump info to avast as they will be interesting in fixing. Also forward to raxco and we'll attempt to contact avast and ask them to fix their driver."

I have not uploaded a memory dump to anyone yet. I doubt I will be able to upload a 12 gig file as it would take near for ever. Has anyone else seen this problem? I will try and reinstall PD 11 and see if it happens again but until I have some time I'll run without it.

See rig specs in my sig.

Thanks
Bill

Dump files should be able to be compressed in a zip file, 7zip has a fairly high compression rate, just check and see if it comes down much from 12gb.

The aswNdis2.sys file is the avast! Firewall Core Firewall Service; c:\windows\system32\drivers\aswNdis2.sys

So I'm not sure how the firewall service would interact with perfectdisk 11.

wonderwrench, we solved one conflict between avast and PerfectDisk in past (fixed in build 623), so I think we can find out very easily what might be wrong in this time. Could you please compress that 12gb file (7zip/rar) and upload it on our ftp? Thanks a lot!

I got some time Monday nite so I installed PD pro build 182 and find I no longer get a BSOD on boot. The only thing different now is I did not update to build 182 from the previous build. So for know I can't recreate the problem. I would attempt to upload the dump file but being the dumb ass I am I ran CCleaner and forgot I had it set to delete dump files. Duh! If the problem happens again I'll update this post and upload the dump file.

Err - PD11 update 183

Quote
The patch file to 11.00.182 was corrupted, so a new patch file was create to 11.00.183. New installation of 11.00.182 was not effected. The bug only effected patching from an earlier build to 11.00.182.

Sounds like the issue was a Raxco problem

Exactly, there was a problem with build .182 and so build .183 was released. Latest avast! IS beta over here and PD .183, working just fine. :)
