Title: ** INTRODUCING: BETA VERSION OF AVAST 5.1 [NOW 5.1.807] **
Post by: Vlk on December 06, 2010, 11:29:53 PM
Hi *,

we'll soon be releasing a new build of avast - version 5.1. This includes the three "consumer" editions of avast - i.e. avast! Free Antivirus, avast! Pro Antivirus and avast! Internet Security. The business products (avast! Business Protection and avast! Business Protection Plus) unfortunately aren't ready for the prime time yet and will be released later.

As usual, we're making the new version available for public testing before it's officially released.

Version 5.1.803 still misses a few things that will be in the next couple of days. For example, some of the Behavior Shield changes aren't there in this build yet (but there's a progress compared to the previous builds 5.1.798/803).

How to get it
Free AV: http://files.avast.com/files/beta/5.1.807/setup_av_free.exe
Pro AV: http://files.avast.com/files/beta/5.1.807/setup_av_pro.exe
IS: http://files.avast.com/files/beta/5.1.807/setup_ais.exe

How to install it
Just run the setup executable (links above). You can either install it from scratch, or on top of an existing avast installation (installing over both 5.0.xxx or 4.8.yyy should be fine). A reboot will be required to complete the installation.

If you're already running a previous v5.1 beta, you can go to this build by simply invoking the Program Update feature from within the avast! UI.

What's new
Most notable improvements include:
- Boot-time scanner for 64-bit OSes (finally!)
- Behavior Shield improvements - now with more sensors and able to detect exact offenders*
- Improved cleaning of infected computers
- Improved anti-rootkit engine - now capable of dealing with the latest TDL variants, for example
- Web Shield improvements (both stability and performance related)
- Mail and Web Shields not hosted in separate NT services anymore, resulting in much faster starts
- IS: new version of antispam engine
- Sound packs (more info coming later)

*The Behavior Shield functionality is still incomplete in this build. And even in the final v5.1, it will work only in "passive mode", which means that the new sensors will be active but won't be stopping the attacks, just reporting them to our backend infrastructure (unless you have opted out from the avast! community membership). This is to allow us to collect enough data before enabling the real thing in Q1 2011.

Changes in the latest build build 5.1.807
please see here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=67373

Thanks much

I might add that - as usual with the betas - some of the language modules were not updated yet and the new items are still in English there; no need to report, this is normal.

I can also say that the boot-time scanner has been noticeably accelerated recently (at least for some OSes/machines). OK, technically this is not directly connected with avast! 5.1, but I thought that you might like to know anyway. ;)

Strange no problem here.

There were two options when the installation started/ended, Update and Uninstall you didn't happen to choose Uninstall, in which case it might have dropped back to 677. For me the install went fine I clicked Update and allowed the reboot and I'm running on 5.1.798 on the restart.

Just wait a few more minutes guys, as the original setup had incorrect servers.def in it that will basically get you back to 5.0.677 on next update...

This will be fixed in like 10 minutes.

okay I did it ;D I was expecting it tbh but still clicked on "update program" to see what it does, and it got indeed downgraded to 5.0.677 ;D +  an "license expired message", then a pop up asking me to renew, clicked on "I already have...", license got re-activated 8)...just like that :) will have to upgrade again... but I'll do that from scratch.

Hi

The Network Shield does not work in this Beta? Everything else seems to be ok, except the NS module doesn't work. Windows 7 x64. Tried re-starting it, doesn't work. Is this expected?

But you will have to download the beta setup package again (note that the URLs have changed little bit).

Sorry for that.

You mean the "Retrieving information" box? This will be a new Welcome screen (shown immediately after installation), most likely going live tomorrow (at least the English version). It's not there yet so that's why you didn't see anything but the progress bar...

The Network Shield should work normally. Strange.

Any idea why mine worked then if the server was incorrectly serving up 5.0.677 ?

Not that I'm complaining about my installation working (install over 5.0.677) ;D

It probably didn't quite work. I bet the next time you invoke program update you will get back to v5.0.677.

Had to do a reboot for it to initialize. Strange, as everything else was working, and never had to do that before. Seems to be Ok now, thanks.

Yes, invoking a manual program update drops back to 5.0.677, downloaded again and will install after a reboot to drop back to 677.

Installed with no problems.  Had to reinstall Adobe Flash Player to see statistics, but now OK.  Did an update and it stayed at version .798, so I have the right one.  Installed AIS but running in Pro mode currently.

okay all works fine now, concerning the wrong program update prompt, doesn't happen anymore after installing the new package. But I got another problem, all shields are off after each reboot. They get re-activated in a click but still, there's a problem. Also, I'm getting the message again that my AIS license has expired, and that's probably causing the shields de-activation...lol, re-activating the shields reactivate my licence too. Okay no big deal.

That said I just gave a shot to my first boot scan on W7/64 and it worked fine. For obvious reasons it cannot scan EFS files but that doesn't matter, I'm glad to have the boot scan again, last time was with 4.8 on Vista32.

edit: Hi Red ;)

OK I have seen my first Behaviour Shield event blocked, this belongs to Outpost Firewall Pro "ACS stands for Agnitum Client Security Service, part of Outpost Firewall Pro" which is required.

This is strange since Vlk said it was in Passive mode (so why would it record a blocking action ?):

Quote from: Vlk's 5.1.798 notes
*The Behavior Shield functionality is still incomplete in this build. And even in the final v5.1, it will work only in "passive mode", which means that the new sensors will be active but won't be stopping the attacks, just reporting them to our backend infrastructure (unless you have opted out from the avast! community membership). This is to allow us to collect enough data before enabling the real thing in Q1 2011.

Does this mean that although the Behaviour Shield says it has blocked this, that it actually hasn't (see image as it is running) ?

Edit: There is still no data relating to detections being entered into the BehaviourShield.txt file. This was something we were screaming in 5.0.677, but nothing seems to have been done about this as there were 12 & 9 so called infected items, image 3

nice option, the timing of Avast popups is now tweakable ;) ...also,I'm noticing that the quickscan (so a pre-set scan) sensitivity and packers settings are not grayed out anymore. IIRC this was already doable through Avast.ini but I preferred to leave it to default, well it's supposed to be a pre-set scan, but okay, may be that's just for the beta phase.

Oh yes, no change at all with the firewall... I was expecting at least the ability to abort connections, may be in 6.0...

hmm guys... I'm getting again and again the issue with all shields deactivated and a license expired message after each reboot, always fixed manually as I described above but it happens again.
I installed from scratch, so an upgrade problem can't be the issue.

edit: the behavior shield doesn't seem to do more than it use to (on W7/64), not that it's just passive as Vlk described, but it still doesn't scan anything, probably still no rule sets like before.

Same here, but we can see some kind of details if you set BS options to "Ask".
I already see 5 "Asking" dialogs, 3 are about Mozy, 1 is services.exe and 1 is CIS.

Anyway, is it strange that there is too many (75) "blocked" actions, though "Analyzed" events are only 16... still increasing...

2. I didn't install a custumized sound package. There is only the possibility of exclusion ???
3. The Behav blocked Mozy :'(

After three attempts to install finally got it. I guess I didn't get the correct install package the first two times. First time it reverted back to .677 after restart. Second time file shield and network shield did not work. Third time is a charm. I noticed that when you right click the avast ball that the menu disappears as it should now.

confirming the "ask mode" issue with the firewall >>> alert popups are freezing, i.e. you can't allow or deny, just close the popup and switch back to auto-decide to start the program. No issue in auto-decide mode.

edit: unrelated, the only problem with the manual scan popup, if you didn't make it sticky and if there was another alert (of any kind) in the meantime, you can't get it back (the scan popup), and there's still nothing saying in systray that a scan is running...

edit: Win7 taskbar button from Avast when minimized shows progress of manual scan, nice 8)

Well mine is presumably set to the default Allow, as I haven't changed it. So I will set it to Ask and see how noisy it is. I think the problem with many of these they are at boot time or very shortly after so the Ask interface is going to be a bit of a pain in the a**.

After installing the beta AIS : the Win 7 Firewall is in a disabled mode (win 7 FW = off ).
This is opposed to the case when Ver 5.0.x was installed (Avast team recommended to leave the win 7 FW on).

Is that a bug in the installer ?

VLK please comment.

Computer frozen completely with both Behav Shield on "ask" and on "allow".
I just need to boot in Safe Mode to change anything. Nightmare (literally...).
I'm trying to restore the 5.0 version right now and uploading a manual dump.
I would like a feedback.

I though the Ask would be very noisy on boot as that is when most of what it does is checked, so it looks like that assumption was right, but even worse freezing the system. I have switched it back to allow, I hadn't rebooted since I set it to Ask, so hopefully it won't have the same problem.

same thing happening here firewall popup freezing
win.7 64/ais

confirming the "ask mode" issue with the firewall >>> alert popups are freezing, i.e. you can't allow or deny, just close the popup and switch back to auto-decide to start the program.

Hi

The Network Shield does not work in this Beta? Everything else seems to be ok, except the NS module doesn't work. Windows 7 x64. Tried re-starting it, doesn't work. Is this expected?
Same thing here, Network Shield is on, but is analysing nothing....
Also, my machine runs Win 7 64 bit

Update: Sorry, I just found that only Web Shield is scanning web traffic, File System Shield and Behavior Shield are on, but are also scanning nothing....

I was unable to manually enter settings into the Mail Shield SSL Accounts. Avast won't save these settings. I was thinking that I was able to manually do this in AIS 5.0. After syncing the account Avast automatically populated the fields. Also, I don't know if this is important to you or not but the "automatic detect and warn about unprotected SSL connections" pop up gets buried behind all other windows. I didn't even notice it was there until I closed two windows. Might want to bring it to the front.

Also noticed that windows defender and windows firewall were turned off with the installation. With other installations I had to manually turn these off. I don't know how many people are going to like this change but I do.

Been waiting for the 64 bit boot time scan. Thanks.

Same for me as well. Can't enter any host names, etc and save them. And doesn't seem like the Mail Sheild is doing anything. Opened Outlook 2010, updated Send/Receive, got new emails and opened them, sent one out, etc. Hotmail and live accounts. The Email Sheild shows no activity for even scanning anything. All setting are on default - Scan outgoing, incoming.

Avast 5.1.798 is working well here, only a few issues mentioned by others, but overall good.

I made an installation from scratch...

I'm using the Spanish version, some texts aren't translated yet (I hope this will be fixed soon)

The Network Shield and Webshield weren't active after install (this solved after the first reboot, so no problem)

If i found some problem i'll report it.

Regards.

Secunia reports Avast beta as being version 5.0.676.0 and tries to update it. While using the beta version of Avast, users may want to add Avast to Secunia's ignore list so Secunia does not try to download a program update. Especially if you are on dial up.

I had shut down my computer and returned to restart it. Received a message that windows did not shut down correctly. After restart received a Blue Screen error and spam filter failed to start. I have the minidump and the sysdata xml if you want me to upload it. I really think it was a one time deal as I may have helped cause it by running Secunia.

while I was running a full manual scan yesterday after a fresh install of 5.1, I saw these "+-" characters appear in the middle of a line while a folder was scanned.

okay this is still happening >>> BSOD when uninstalling Opera11 >>> "System_Service_Exception"

1 this only happens when Avast is installed (well Opera doesn't load any driver so that must be something else conflicting, and the answer is Avast, as there's no problem uninstalling Opera11 when Avast is not there).

2 this happened already here on a previous install of Windows (W7/64) with Avast 5.0.677 and Opera 11 alpha), so, as I've had (for unrelated reasons here) to re-install Windows in the meantime, my setup is not the cause.

3 I could reproduce just now with Avast 5.1.798 and Opera11 beta ( http://my.opera.com/desktopteam/blog/2010/12/06/extension-improvements-updates-to-core-and-some-other-nice-fixes ), any attempt to uninstall Opera leads to a blue screen, did it twice a few minutes ago.

4 when it first happened, as said with Avast 5.0.677 and Opera 11alpha, I already emailed Vlk about it, uploaded a memory dump to Avast ftp and gave Vlk the password, so I guess there's no need to go through that again, concerning this issue, Avast has my data already. Please fix that ;)

edit: just adding if needed that of course Opera 11 can be properly uninstalled in safe mode (i.e. when Avast isn't loaded) or in normal mode, when Avast is not installed at all.

So after a clean uninstall and a clean install of the 5.1 install pkg. the install process didn't want to get by the "qick systen scan" at the end of the install....scanned for 2.5hrs ??? not so quick...and hung with no apparent activity. unrelated here, but the BSOD caused by Avast when uninstalling Opera 11 as mentioned in my above post caused all profiles from opened programs as it happened to break completely, and that includes Firefox (all custom settings lost, including LP credentials, and I'm sure I would have lost all my passwords if I had used FF integrated pw manager), Thunderbird (accounts deleted), and Skype, all reset to default with messages as if they were running for the first time. I could restore the good versions thanks ;D I know, it's not Avast that did that, it's the BSOD ;)

Behaviour Shield Again:

1. Still getting 13 of 15 blocked, yet no entries in the behaviour shield text file, there is little point in having this file if the only thing recorded is start and stop data. It is absolutely no good the BS User Interface showing blocked items if there is zero way of finding out what is blocked.

People have been complaining about this in the forums for some time now in 5.0, rather than provide comfort and additional security it makes people worry about what it is the the behaviour shield has found  and why. Yet, zero/zilch/nada/nothing/sod all information in the BS report file. This is why so many people have switched off the BS, which is bad news when it really could be a great addition, but right now it is causing more grief that potential good.

2. The Trusted Processes section of the BS Expert Settings doesn't appear to work. Yesterday the only notification on the blocked items is the Last blocked field and because this is for Outpost firewall pro. I added this to the trusted processes, yet here it is again listed as blocked (we know as I have Allow and the BS is currently passive), so the trusted process doesn't work or doesn't function correctly.

See image, note the different path annotation, the BS info is in the old style 8.3 format, yet when you use the Browse function to navigate to trusted process, the entry path is in the full non-shortened 8.3 format, so essentiall they are the same locations but different path formats.

Is it this which is failing or that the trusted process function simply doesn't work ?

Also, the install time and process was quite abit longer with 5.1
Same here. Much more longer.

Yes much longer, so much so I thought there might be something wrong.

I'm not aware of any freezing here, but that question is more for Vlk.

The minidump can be uploaded to ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming (ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming)

Oh no... We are two - at least - and you can't reproduce it?
I won't be able (today) to install it again and froze my computer... restoring the 5.0 version again...

schmidthouse, scanning and installation times aren't related imho.

Okay...but thats strange because it was during the installation...I mean there was no indication that setup was finished doing it's thing  :-\

Sorry Tech..also when did your computer freeze up? During installation process or after reboot? :)

Updated last night. Boot and even the GUI was much more responsive. Memory usage was unbelievably low as usual. Working great. Hopefully I won't run into issues but if I do, well that's the point to beta :D

So far so good, system is even booting faster :)

Just one thing I noticed :

Last night the BB analyzed CCleaner and was "blocked" ( in fact it was "allowed" because that is the default option ), but now the BB doesn't analyze CCleaner anymore.

Edit : It seems that I was wrong. With BB on "Ask" it's analyzing CCleaner and asking me what to do( I choose "Allow" for now ).

Edit 2 : And now, after re-booting, it doesn't analize CCleaner anymore :-\

Tech, is this issue (memory leak / high CPU usage) same as yours?
Just noticed... thanks to dual-core CPU I didn't even notice this.
Maybe the cause is Behav Shield, maaaaaany blocked items.... :'(

Updated: Memory / CPU usage just dropped dramatically and returned to normal... ???

yeah definitely no memory leak here (RAM is as usual), no freezing either, boot times are okay and on a side note the setup from scratch was as fast as it use to on 5.0. remains the BSOD when uninstalling Opera; the guys at Opera obviously don't even want to hear about it (well there's not much they could do) as that's an Avast driver issue.

ps: Avastsvc using 7500 kb here, couldn't be lower.

I really haven't noticed much of a difference in RAM usage, image1.

Same as above, no noticeable difference, I don't sit with a stopwatch to see if there are any differences, but no noticeable difference in XP Pro SP3.

Still zero recording of any blocked items in the behaviour shield report file, a real pain after the number of complaints about this in 5.0. The new BS Expert Settings, Trusted Processes also doesn't work.

I upgraded to the Beta (free version) and checked the one thing that has been giving me fits with prior versions - The outlook plug-in crashes Outlook 2007 whenever outlook is invoked (started) from an external program (like explorer).  If outlook is already running when invoked, there is no problem because the plug-in is already loaded. But if outlook must start, the process of trying to load the plug-in causes it to crash.

Try it if you run outlook 2007. In explorer and with outlook NOT running, browse your hard drive and find a file - any file - and right click, select "send to", then "email recipient".  Outlook will try to start and create the email message with attachment, but will instead pop an error window indicating Outlook has stopped working.

Disable the Avast plug-in in outlook... it works fine.

Run Outlook before trying to do the "send to", and it works fine.

Note:  The first time I tried this after installing 5.1.798 (and rebooting), it worked.  But subsequent times it failed.  Not sure if it always works OK the first time after a reboot... I'll check.

I'm not sure if this is an outlook issue or an avast issue, but it sure would be nice to get resolved.  Its been out there for a year or more.
