Title: What control is there over logging in Avast 5
Post by: davexnet on December 08, 2010, 06:39:18 PM
Hi all,
in Avast 4.8, there used to be an AV category in the Windows Event viewer where you could see
recent activities logged by Avast.  In 5 it is not there.  Where is the log, and how can I control what
is logged?

The log has been removed from the event viewer in version 5, and is now only in the program itself.

I don't know the answer to the rest of your questions, as I don't have a version 5 to play with right now.  I know it's in there though, and has been asked before on the forum.

I'm expect it's in the interface somewhere, I just can't find it.

Well, what log are you looking for exactly?  There's a log in each interface.  For example, if you scan the computer and want to look for the scan log, it's under the scanner tab.

If you want to see what's in the firewall log, well, apparently there's problems with that one, that will be fixed in 5.1.  See this thread: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=60428.0

I'm not talking about the scan log, I mean the real time alerts that used to get recorded
in the Windows event log in 4.8.

Why did they remove that functionality?  It was very useful.

Got me... I guess the Windows Vista/7 event log is more difficult to get access for a third-party program.

Or maybe they just wanted everything to go through the main interface, I dunno.

Sorry!

Well where are the real time logs and setting in the main interface ?

Again, I don't have version 5 on any of the computers at work here.  I'm still stuck on 4.8, so I can't tell you.

I have version 5 at home, but I'm on that computer so rarely, I can't remember where to go.

Someone should be able to answer this for you soon though.

It is incorporated into the Real-Time Shields UI, a clue is it called Shield log, not all shields have this link the Behaviour and Network Shields don't.

Thanks David.  I really feel dumb when I can't answer these simple questions.  Hopefully I'll be on 5.x everywhere soon!

Thanks DavidR

The wording on mine is different - is it because I have the "home" version ?

No problem - They aren't that simple (when the OP hadn't seen it), especially as you have no reference or help file, etc.

<snip>

You're welcome,

The wording differs because you are looking at a different shield to the one I posted (File System Shield).

If you check my signature you will see I'm using the free version ;D

I looked at my file system shield and it still says "show report file"

Well, David is using the 5.1 beta apparently.

That might be why.

What is the status of the 5.1 beta ? stable enough to use for a home PC ?

Yes there may also be some differences in the Beta UI.

Depends on the system... Really, it is for advanced users as any other beta of a serious company :)

thanks for the info.  I consider myself advanced, but I'm not familiar enough
with 5.0 (I only installed it a few days ago) to tell if what I see in the beta
is unusual or not, for example, the problem I reported with the network shield
becoming "inactive"

For now, I've reverted to 5.0.

davexnet, the problem with Network Shield is not common, it's typical of a bug in the beta.
