Title: Close applications when updating?

I closed down all open applications when I installed Avast. Can someone please tell me if I am supposed to do likewise when the programme is updating? Thanks.

No, you don't have to. Virus database is updated completely "on the fly"; for the program updates you have to restart your computer to apply the changes, but any other applications should not be affected.
