Title: [Resolved] Re-Registration Date for Free Avast
Post by: jmazz on December 14, 2010, 01:47:22 AM
hi,
I'm new to this forum so sorry if I posted in wrong area.
I have been using Avast Free version for a long time and got a message last night saying that I should Update.
I followed the update instructions and expected to have to put in my old registration code.
When I looked at the summary screen it says Version = 5.0.677 and Expiry = Date 1/4/2011.
I was expecting one year of registration and I didn't like the "April Fools" Expiry Date.
Can someone reassure me that all is OK   :)

Hi, welcome to the forums. What version of avast! were you using? If it prompted you to update from 4.8 to 5, then your current license information will be retained/saved, if you installed over version 4.8.

I think that the previous version was 4.8 although I am not sure.
Is there any way to re-register to change the registration elapse date to something other than "April Fool's Day"?
I just don't feel comfortable in having virus software which is due to lapse on that day.

You should be prompted around 1 week before current registration expires.

.......a little superstitious, are we?  ;)

I subscribed (paid for) to my previous AV software providor for 13+ years, and yet they let me down badly by suddenly cancelling my 3 user licenses this month when they still had 5 months to run before renewal was due. Needless to say, this left me without any protection and no way to update, so I had no other option but to uninstall their software and switch to avast!

It has taken nearly two weeks for them to sort it all out and finally refund my 5 months pro-rata, as I decided I no longer want to be with a software vendor who makes such an error and then refuses to assist in a timley manner to ensure my machines are protected. I actually had a senior Australian executive take up my cause when I complained how badly I was being treated by their Indian support centre, none of whom seemed to speak or understand English very well. After being so loyal to them and always paying ahead of time, I was terribly upset, as you can imagine

So, my question here is, whilst I decide whether or not to buy the paid version of avast!, is there a time limit on how many times the brilliant free version can be renewed or on how many machines it can be used?

The Free version lets you renew 14 days prior to your expiration date.  You should get a warning pop-up reminding you to renew at that time.

Oh, okay, that's good to know, thank you. I guess the process is exactly the same then?

Looks like I'm all set then. Seems to be a great program, and version 5's GUI is very easy to use I have found.

<snip>

This rather depends on who you are addressing as it was jmazz that started the topic and he hasn't come back with anything that appears like it being resolved. But Erebus has jumped on this passing bandwagon ;D

@ jmazz
The only way to change the re-registration date if you aren't comfortable with April 1st is to uninstall avast and do a clean re-install. That will allow you to re-register.

- Download the latest version of avast, 5.0.677 http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free_eng.exe (http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free_eng.exe) (English only) and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn't save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.

- Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear5.exe find it here (http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility) and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 4.8 and 5.0).

Maybe I'm wrong, but the date listed in the first posting
says 1/4/2011. April Fools day should be 4/1/2011, at least
in Ohio.  Happy Holiday Season to all.

Entirely depends on where you live, those of us not in the US don't have it backwards ;D

The first of April 2011 is the way it is said and the date format the same in Australia where jmazz is.

Thanks David, I realized that few minutes after I posted
that. Being a Ham Radio operator for 43 years and talking
to people all over the world, I know that using GMT is
standard for hams, but we have different ways of saying
things. My apology.
