I do not know most of those companies on that Yahoo page but I do know that TigerDirect is a trustworthy company and their prices are just as good. See item numbers 13 & 17 at the link below.

Or, item number 21 at the link below for Ultimate :

Thanks CharleyO for the posted links.

1. What should I go for Retail OR OEM?

2. W7 Pro OR W7 Ult 32 bit?

3. Some sites on the link sell OEM for 120 bucks....some catch?

Regards,

Merry X-Mas in advance.

Doc.

Hi Doc,

The big difference in the 2 types is that the OEM version will most likely come without a fancy box and almost no documentation while with the Retail version you will get the fancy box, the extra documentation along with installation instructions, and other product information slips, etc. With the OEM version, it will most likely come in a paper & plastic sleeve along with the registration key on the sleeve and that will be about it.

So, if you have experience with installing a Windows OS before, I would say go with the OEM and save a little money. Otherwise, get the Retail version.

As to Pro or Ult versions, it all depends on what you want to do and whether or not you need all the "bells & whistles" or not. Read the chart that is on both the Pro & Ult pages and you will see there is very little difference. You will have to decide if you need the extras for about $40 more.

OEM = Original Equipment Manufacturer, so you are normally only meant to purchase this with a system or a major hardware update, e.g. Hard Disk or Motherboard, etc.

The big difference being you get zero support from Microsoft, as it isn't a retail product where They provide support. With OEM if you are experiencing problems with W7 they are the ones you are meant to go to for support. Some of those selling OEM versions haven't the slight idea on supporting the W7 OS, so you have to exercise care where you purchase.

That is why there are in some cases big differences between OEM and Retail prices.

it's not just that, Windows OEM licenses, as opposed to retail versions, aren't transferable over another computer.. officially... yeah I heard a few times that a phone call to MS solved the problem (for instance in a case where hardware suddenly broke quickly after you acquired the OEM).

@ Yezinki: doesn't matter where you get it from, as long and it's from a well known retailer. Be careful with that because many obscure sites actually will sell you pirated OEM copies. Also, if you got a recent laptop, why not buy a 64 bit version? your CPU can handle that so...

You can look for it in your language though.

Yes its good but the 64 bit version is better.

I did not need the Pro version as I do not need Windows XP Mode, Domain Join nor
back up to a home or business network.

Also want to point out that most retail copies have both the 32bit and 64bit DVDs inside. When I bought  the upgrade for my Brother PC it had both Discs, great that they give you that choice.
