Title: avast almost the best av

and i think maybe i would buy avast

now i'm using nod32 because i bought it for 1 year now i have only
1 mounth free
it's right to buy good software , alwil doesn't work for free!!!

for my avast will be perfect with a LOW memory consuming!!!

if i want only a resident shield is too much 8mb of ram!
for example without vrdb,mail scanner and others providers..

Dr.web,nod32,vet,sophos,f-prot and other GOOD software in the resident
protection need very low memory
not everybody has super computer!

i said this to make avast the best av in the market
and boys remember it's right to buy a GOOD software,for the life of
the software!

Avast: Uses about 21MB RAM (via VM size). Super-quick, barely slows down systems.

KAV: Uses about 15MB RAM. However, opening a folder full of EXE's is a painstaken process with KAV, (takes about 1 minute to load 25 icons).

I personally don't care too much about RAM usage.... I'm more concerned about _SPEED_. Speed is NOT RAM usage. RAM usage is NOT speed.

And I doubt any AV product can operate off 2MB RAM. Probably some hidden/integrated drivers...

In fact, Notepad uses almost 3MB RAM.

But so far I've not met something coming somewhere close to the speed Avast!4 inspects a folder full of scannable files... response is almost instant, while with other programs you must light+smoke a cigarette before you have access to the folder.

And yes, I'm 100% sure it uses 946K of RAM. Light resource usage and good heuristics are F-Prot's two good traits....

In fact, the Linux and Dos versions have an --ONLYHEUR switch, in which case it completely ignores its virus database and relies only on its advanced neural-network heuristics...

Very interesting to test out; doesn't detect much less than the sig-based scanner...

--Avast as my primary/resident AV (most features for its speed/resource usage)

--KAV for a backup, on-demand scanner (most sigs, best detection, but puts waaay too much load on the system.

--F-Prot as another backup scanner. I use its neural-network heuristics when I'm really doubtful, but mostly for fun :)

Post by: raman on July 15, 2003, 05:54:46 PM: Nod32 V2.0 is a good product, but i do not know if it support more Archive Packer than Avast( Avast support SFX Archives,which Nod doesn´t). Avast supports only some old Dos-Exepacker, but with the new Version(which will come soon i hope) Avast and Nod32 are equal.
BTW: Nod32 does not support UPX in all its versions right now, and no UPX-Dlls at all(AFAIK)
