Title: Problem with forum topic content/layout.
Post by: DavidR on December 26, 2010, 07:55:17 PM
Is anyone else experiencing this problem:
In the default  forum theme, the Quote button is missing from the top right of each post, see image1.
If I change theme to say the Babylon theme I used before I have it back, image2.

Well the weird thing is that it works on my desktop with firefox and XP Pro on the default theme, but not on my netbook running win7 x86 and firefox.

However, this was working before with the win7 netbook with firefox and the default theme. Yet today win7 has fallen out with firefox anf the default theme, a real pain in the ass.

I have to say I'm finding win7 nothing short of totally counter productive what would take seconds seems to take a lifetim on win7. Part of that may well be down to also having to learn the netbook functions also. But I certainly am not finding win7 a pleasurable experience, a pain in the ass is possibly less painfull.

Well I have got them working again and I don't really know why/how. But I reinstalled Firefox and my add-ons so it is the same as the desktop (it was before), I also go rid of the adblock plus filter subscriptions and re-downloaded them.

After all that I have the buttons back and whilst I don't know the true cause, I suspect it was an erroneous filter in adblock plus, but that should have been the same.

Hours of consternation over, now perhaps I can get on with some work.

To many to ask ;D

When virtually everything is different where do you start. I know XP Pro almost inside out and blind folded having used it for getting on for 8 years.

Almost everything I want to do requires time to find it and it really isn't as intuitive as everyone makes out, certainly not for me.  Not to mention this is on a netbook with limited resources and uses the win7 starter edition, so that will no doubt be different again from the Premium and Ultimate editions, etc.

David,
It's a learning curve. Once you get used to it, you'll love it.
Get used to using the search function in Win 7 is a great shortcut to almost everything.  :)

For me it was the following erroneous filter in the Adblock Plus Fanboy Annoyances subscription.

Glad to hear the problem went away for you, David.  I guess you use a different subscription and that it's been updated already.

I think love is one hell of a stretch right now. Given I'm fighting this war on two fronts, getting used to my new netbook also.

Yes I was also using the Fanboy Annoyances and Easy list. It may be that my desktop version was out of sync to the netbook one, all I know is it caused a lot of hassle.

I find that you're opinion of Win7 the same as mine.

I'm getting used to it, and still like it better than XP (only because I'm quite sick of it) but I totally agree that some certain "easily accessible settings" are a heck of a lot harder to get to than it's win 2k and XP cousins.

Still, it's no different.  Things have different names and different homes, but they're all the same as they were before in my opinion.  Just give it some time.

The hardest part is being the only tech at your work and having to remember what things are called or where things are in the different OSes in order to troubleshoot problems over the phone.  Especially when you have clients that can barely find the "start button".  Network properties in XP is called Manage Network adapters in vista, and manage network connections in 7 (as far as I can remember, I'm probably wrong so don't yell at me).  Same $hit, different stink.

My biggest problem will be not using it enough to get used to it. Since it is on a netbook, that for all intents and purposes is basically as a backup to my desktop. Should I ever have a problem with the desktop where I'm unable to get on-line to resolve, that is where the netbook comes in to its own.

I can't really see myself taking it out an about with me when I do go out. So it isn't likely to get a huge amount of use other than keeping it up to date, etc.

Well, I can't see you still using XP in 2-5 or so years, so it will become normal for you eventually.

Since you mentioned updating, I'll comment on that.  It seems like the biggest "upgrade" to the OS that I've noticed from XP.  It actually has a program to deal with updates instead of a website and an active x control.  I think it's a nice improvement.

Anyway, here's to getting our main machines out of the "dark ages" and installing a modern OS soon!  ;D

Cheers!

I can, if I still have this desktop, I can't see me paying for a win7 upgrade on an existing system.

In two years, who knows too far in computer technology terms and win8 will no doubt be out at that point, so thee is every possibility of jumping win7 for my main system as and when I get round to changing it. So far it does everything that I want of it and there is nothing in win7 that I consider a must have as you must have a need of it.

I have a lot of software that does its job without fault on XP, upgrade to win7 and that would no longer be the case and unless you buy win7 Pro or the win7 Ultimate edition you haven't got XP Compatibility mode. So now we are also talking of the cost of upgrading software also.

My XP Pro system has been checked and would run win7, but I really don't see the logic in upgrading an old system when there is likely to be another OS along in 18 months, etc. So it simply isn't going to happen until I get a new desktop system and as I have said mine does what I ask of it and I can't justify the cost simply to have win7.

My Windows 7 system came with Vista and that is the main reason I updated to Windows 7.

I would not compare a desktop system to a netbook.
Windows 8 is more than 2years out.

Yet there are rumors around CES 2011 that MS has a tablet with Win 8 installed to show off.  Might be an Alpha product, but still.
