Hello,
I have a new problem started after installing AVAST pro.
Big e-mails with attachments that are, say 1.5 Mb JPG etc., cause timeouts and sometimes get sent only after 5-6 retries. What can be done to prevent this ?

You must set the timeout of both email program and avast to the maximum.
e-mail programs used to be 5 minutes (300 seconds).
avast providers should be configured to more than this.
I can't see a way to 'by-pass' the question of avast or from your email program ::)
Of course, as you may know, packing the files (zip, arg...) will decrese the size of the files (in most cases).

Most types of packing won't make much difference with JPG's, will they? JPG is, after all, essentially a type of compression protocol for image data to start with. Self-extracting EXE's are similar, zipping usually won't compress them much.
Admittedly, I do recognize that you can use multiple layers of compression, that's how "compression bombs" work after all.

In most cases I wrote... You're right, and I knew that, jpg can't be easily compressed :P

well....still having problems. OE6 is set to the max (300 sec) and avast to 600 sec. but still I get a lot of timeouts. :(
is there anything else to do ? I send big filez a lot...
btw, brasil flag....I see it twice a week in my Capoeira training...

Choo-chee, why don't you disable the Outbound scanning?
That way, the only 'problem' will be OE6 and not avast.
There are some mail programs just to send big files (maybe in 'Links' on my signature you can found something, otherwise, you can Google a little ;)).

If you send a lot of large files, why not do it through ftp?

I do not scan outbound mail anymore and changed all the settings. for the last hours it was quite OK. FTP is not good 'cause my clients are not power-users and know nothing about this tool :(

FTP is not for email. FTP is short for File Transfer Protocol. It is used, as the names indicates, for sending files. eg: this is used to upload files to a website, directly connect to another system and get files of it etc.
Windows has a commandline version. start > run > cmd > ftp > "help" if you want to see the commands.
There are also many ftp applications, a lot of them are freeware.
Total Commander is a file manager (and a lot more) and has FTP build in.
Cerberus is a free FTP server application.

Many websites offer free upload for your pictures as well as many ISP's. Your ISP may already offer that option to you. Check it at their website or contact their support. For the others, use GOOGLE to find one you like.

OE6 is funny about large files. I have had trouble sending large RTF's.
I use an alternate email client for the "big" stuff....
Pegasus Email. It is an excellent backup to OE, and can handle multiple accounts pulling all POP mail into one box.
Nice feature.
I tried Thunderbird but it acted too much like OE and would not send large files.
There's also Phoenix mail, and Foxfire which are good.
Eudora is nice but I personally did not like it.
You can find email prgrams as well as FTP's (I recommend WS-FTP lite.....simple, effective and stable):
