Title: INTRODUCING: New avast program update 5.1.864
Post by: Vlk on December 31, 2010, 11:59:59 PM
Hi guys,

I'm glad to announce the general availability of avast 5.1. After almost a month-long beta testing marathon (and 3 beta refreshes just in the last 24 hours), I sincerely hope this new version will serve you well. Even though avast 6.0, equipped with even more features, is coming relatively soon, v5.1 is still a very important update for us. Most of the new good stuff is hidden under the hood.

The most notable improvements are:
- boot-time scanner now available even in 64-bit Windows
- big improvements in the Behavior Shield
- improvements in the antirootkit engine
- improvements in the cleaning module
- stability/performance improvements in the Web Shield
- CommunityIQ improvements
- added support for sound packs
- minor improvements in the user interface
- minor fixes in the firewall

I'd also like to take this opportunity and  thank all our beta-testers for a job well done. Without you, we couldn't make this happen.

BTW it takes a few days for download.com (and other local download servers) to update their bits. If you want to download the full installer now, use the following direct links:

Free AV: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe
Pro AV: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_pro.exe
Internet Security: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_ais.exe

Last but not least, Happy New Year 2011 everyone!
Now, let the party begin! ;)

Thanks
Vlk

You can simply add the file in question to the File System Shields exceptions. That will solve the issue for you.

Damn, I was actually expecting a fix for the BASS issue..
..But no such luck.  :'(

This has actually nothing to do with the program itself, all the related code is contained in the virus definitions, i.e. it would be modified in a virus database update. However, I'm not saying it will be... basically the file is compressed by an unknown (or more precisely, non-public, non-standard, private-version of) cryptor, and since it's not that widespread, it doesn't really have priority, sorry.
On the other hand, if it's caused by some antidebugging trick (and not by the fact that the file simply takes too long to process because it's so thoroughly crypted), it's possible that it will be solved by an unrelated engine update.

just to correct something, I sent a behavior shield log (the one found on C: root) to Vlk earlier yesterday, and it wasn't relevant at all...'cause I'm seeing now that it was created on Dec 30 and not 31. Probably happened with .857, ie the problematic behavior shield build on 64 bit OS, solved after that.

You can simply add the file in question to the File System Shields exceptions. That will solve the issue for you.
I use several programs based on BASS, and I'm always getting updated files for each program.
The exclusions workaround is just not a very good solution.

Hey we're actually quite distant from each other right now... well me and Igor only like like 1.5 miles from each other, but pk for example is currently 250 miles away I think...

Anyway, enjoy your New Year's Eve, I think we're done for today... :)

Have a good one,

By the way, do you think it would be possible to connect to your system? E.g. do a remote desktop session - use something like LogmeIn, TeamViewer etc...

It could be potentially useful. I'm not saying now, but sometime early next week.

I've installed AIS on my 64bit system to check how the suit is working, supplied the license and everything seemed fine. But like after 1 hour i got a message, that my license has expired. No info was available in the License panel. Then i've re-inserted the license and it was accepted and the info showed up in the License panel. Seems fine for now.
It was still a strange one though.

decided to do two installs from scratch on two systems (both W7/64), one with AIS, the other one with the free version, in one case to make sure I got rid of any remnant from the beta, on the other case (the free) because the behavior shield wasn't analyzing anything. Okay on the free version, it does scan events now, this said:

1 after re-installing AIS, got an all shields off after rebooting. Fix button worked and solved that. Second reboot >>> license expired and all shields off again (see screen shot). Fixed by entering my license a second time. Third reboot, all is fine now, including WSC recognizing the firewall.

2 after re-installing the free version, no way to use the automatic registration button. Clicking on the register now button retrieves info and then nothing, just nothing, no popup form appearing, so the software remains unregistered. I'm gonna have to use the online form and request a registration code.

Had a bad update. Filesystem shield was not showing any statistics and the update area showed that installed version was 5.1.677 and after I rebooted the system, it showed 5.1.864 is available. So, installed from scratch and everything is fine until now.

updated via GUI, restart the machine, and tada.. working well. i noticed the start up went faster, the yellow exclamation disappear fast. the right click bug in tool bar also disappear too.

in my task manager, avastsvc.exe used less memory than the previous version. but in this version, clicking the tab in GUI feels a little bit lag.

Thanks to all the avast! team and all the beta testers.

Updated free version on my XP machine through the GUI. So far so good. Now I have to do the Vista one.

Quick scan took 5:32 for 7.0 GB of data. I think that's about the same as before.

In this case, I'd suggest reinstalling avast now.

Just uninstall it, reboot, and download it again and install.
Hopefully, it will help.

Behavioral shield is still not working:
Behavioral shield - 0/0

I try a reinstall, but it doesn´t work.
After the reinstall and a reboot it will work.

Funny: After the reboot i change something in the avast preferences and then... my first Windows 7 Bluescreen.

there was like 90 mail files each 4.5MB size so around 400MB

the point why i find it negatively interesting was the ultra slow scanning speed

I did the update from 5.0.667 to 5.1.864 using the GUI

So far so good except for a critical Windows error on both W7 HP x32 and W7 HP x+64 when I run this one non-critical utility program.  I will look further into it in the future.  The program is temp files cleaner by oldtools.   The program does a deep cleaning of temp. files that other programs like CCC don't do.    However it stops all running processes in order to do this cleaning which I am initially thinking where the conflict may be coming from.  I was not getting this error with 5.0677.

I will try running it with AIS self-defense tool not enabled and see what happens.

Also I have added maybe one or two other programs since list running the TFC tool so the conflict could be coming from one of those programs.

I did not apply any W7 updates since I last ran TFC with 5.0677 so I don't think that it is a W7 conflict.

However everything else appears to be working okay though I have not done a thorough evaluation as of yet.

I did the manual update, to this new version and once again it still tells me I do not have enough user rights to update the program. it won't even try, it stopped before it even tried to access the internet. I am logged in as the administrator, I am the only user on the system. the only way to get a more administrator-y account is to go into safe mode and you can't do squat in safe mode anymore. It will let me update the definitions, but not the program. Updating the program should be something any account should be able to do anyway... This needs to be fixed.
(I would also like to not see that annoying YIELD! sign on my Icon just because I want to check for updates manually and not let it do it 6 times a day while I am trying to do other things. Or at least let us tell it when to do the check! I don't need all this pinging and I don't need 50 updates a week. once a week is more than enough.)

ty, unfortunately that made no change to my situation, maybe after another reboot. But it still will not let me do an update, unless I download it manually and that really is the issue, the other is just an annoyance and makes many of the features useless.

the main reason why i would like to thank the avast team is because in 5.0 i noticed a major slow down in browsing the web in firefox (even freezing and hangs occured) but those problems have been erased in 5.1. there is no performance degrade in 5.1 over 5.0. this is the best version yet! thanks again!  ;D

Now, let the party begin! ;)

Vik,

Thanks very much for an excellent program and for a very smootly run beta routine with lots of feedback here and excellent info being available.

Just wanted to say it went well on my XP PRO SP3 Thinkpad T40. I had Outpost 2009 free firewall and Avast 4.8 running. After a complete uninstall with Revo Uninstaller, I started over with Avast 5.1, followed by Outpost Security Suite Free. Worked great. Outpost recognized Avast 5.1 and smartly did not then install its own anti-virus module.

All is working well. Process Explorer shows CPU and memory usage to be the small footprint I've grown to expect from both Avast and Outpost.

Am extremely impressed with this release and much thanks to you personally and to the developers.

Happy New Year to all!

 :)

Hi there,

Congrats on the final version of Avast 5.1. Sadly, the web shield bug it is still present. I am using Firefox 4 beta 8 and when the web shield is activated there is very noticeable slow down in web browsing. All settings are default and this is a new clean install, no upgrade. Previous AV was MSE 2 final, which unfortunately it is performing good but VERY CPU intensive and still has the bugs from the beta version. So, I moved away from it to Avast. I would appreciate if you can help me with my issues. Thanks in advance, Ivan K.

I recommend using Firefox with no addons to debug problems first, then post something useful.
FYI I am using Firefox running in RAM, it does not get faster than that. If you don't know how is that done do a bit of research before posting.

Just updated Free 5.0.677 to 5.1.864, Win7 32-bit. Once update completed, I selected no at the restart dialog box which immediately killed all my downloads via Firefox 3.6.13. I was grabbing new DVICO BDA drivers from the very slow .kr site. Wasn't using a dload manager. Never done that before.

Hi, first post in the forum since there were no problems in the last 5 years using Avast.

After upgrading successfully to 5.1.864 and restarting, there was a BSOD stating "aswsp.sys attempted to access a non paged area".
Rebooted and same message again. Uninstalled Avast in safe mode, downloaded the full 5.1.864 installer, reinstalled (all went smooth), performed a quick scan with no problem and after rebooting again the same BSOD.
I had to revert back to 5.0.677 were there is no problem.

When I open the Avast UI, it says that the new version is 5.0.864 not 5.1.864.  Is this a mistake?  Or is this a more recent version?  Still have 5.0.677.

I'm one more who's happy to see the new popup-timer options, many thanks.

I haven't read all the way through this thread, so it's possible someone already mentioned this.  One (minor, I think, but important) feature I was hoping for was adding self-protect status to the list of status bar warning options.  If I temporarily disable self-protection (e.g., when defragging), there's no indication of that anywhere except in the settings/troubleshooting section, even though it's definitely a loss of some protection as discussed in other threads.

Any plans to add this sometime in the relatively near future?

I know at least one competitor of Avast has this feature.  That was about the only feature of that IS program that I liked ???

Hi ondrej,

I already upgraded to version 5.1.864 (Final version) of AIS and it's look the AvastSVC.exe become very lighter as we expected and LunarWolf mentioned.

So far nothing happened with my system on my vmware, and i trying to open a lot of browser likes mozilla and IE (with sandbox). The task manager display the CPU and memory process don't need a huge size on process.

Nice..and will keep update...

Happy New year for Avast Software team, May God keep preserve and blessing us in this new year..

cheers,

there are also some responses in the German avast! Forums about

- slowly responding systems: http://forum.avadas.de/threads/2499-Neue-Version-5.1.864-bremst-Windows-Explorer-extrem-aus
- freeze (only one case so far): http://forum.avadas.de/threads/2480-avast!-5.1.864?p=21323&viewfull=1#post21323
- no sound and network availability: http://forum.avadas.de/threads/2488-Nach-Update-auf-Avast-5.1.864-XP-Probleme

So far it seems only 1-3 individual cases were reported, where most of the users have no problems. Anyway it seems slowly responding system is the biggest problem atm.

Just curious.

Nightly Scan 75GB.  No files over 4GB

Time to scan while simultaneously surfing the Net is about 15 - 16 minutes.

Does anyone know?

Is this good, bad or about average?

Situation: I am using Win 7x64 and had 2 BSOD's yesterday when trying to update the new version of AIS. I uninstalled and went back to Avast 5 (AIS)...loaded slick. This morning I uninstalled 5 and tried the new version again...BSOD again. I wondered what might be different in my situation versus all of the regulars here that are doing so well with the new update...I was a late December "free AIS" winner. That shouldn't lead to a BSOD, but I decided to try the free "new update"...it loaded smooth (like the new AIS version did) but no BSOD. It is running fine...I'm not as well versed as most of you but it seems odd that the free version loads so well, runs fine, but the AIS version won't. Am I way out in left field?

Hi Avast Team,

First of all I would like to say Thank you for releasing Avast 5.1 it is great and works well.
I like the way I can now set how long the pop-up alerts stay on screen, I also like the pop up scan window so I can see the scan progress.

I have a few questions and queries and they are:

1. I had to uninstall 5.0.677 and do a clean install of the program 5.1.864, why did I not get the pop-up alert saying that new program update available? I had ask Ask when program update is available.

2. While using avast 5.0 I did a full system scan and at the end of the scan, the results were NO THREAT FOUND
Now with the new program 5.1 after the full system scan the results are SOME FILES COULD NOT BE SCANNED[/color  why would be happening?

3. I look at show results and results are as follows:  Archive Password Protected
My question is why does this result come up in the new Avast 5.1.864 program and yet I never got this message in ANY of the 5.0 programs?

Please could someone give me answers these questions thanks.

happy avast user:)

It's hardly connected to the program version, as the related functionality is fully inside of the virus definitions. Maybe some new files appeared on your disk?
Hard to say more without knowing (a few examples of) the filenames in question ;)

@ "happy avast user" did you add any packers to the full scan? it use to be an almost fully preset scan with very few options to change compared to custom scans (and I didn't mind to be honest).

In case you added packers like ZIP or RAR etc... and you got passworded archives on your disk that went unnoticed before, the fact that the process attempts to scan them now is normal, and as they're passworded, it can't ;)

ps: if you don't have passworded archives and didn't add packers, ignore this message.

edit: to be absolutely clear, you couldn't add packers in the full scan settings of Avast 5.0, in 5.1 you can, and you may have just done that.

Thank You Avast Team!!!

Just wanted to say that I have been a loyal user to your wonderful AV software for many many years and have even recommended your software to my family and friends. Unfortunately a couple of months ago when I downloaded update 5.0.677 it had caused so much problems on my machine that I was forced me to uninstall it and use something different. :(

I just found out yesterday that a new update was available so I uninstalled the other av and reinstalled Avast AV.

After reinstalling the program and testing it out I am happy to announce that Avast is running flawless on my machine once again and I am very happy to be a Avast user once again!  :)

Just wanted to say thanks to the Avast AV team for a job well done and keep up the great work. Thank you! :)

Btw I will be getting a new laptop really soon. To show gratitude for the wonderful work and support Avast has given throughout the years I will be purchasing and installing the Pro version on it. I am looking forward to this.

Thanks once again and I wish everyone a Happy New Year! :)

I found I have a slower responding system as well. Firefox takes a few seconds longer to open than with v5.0.677. A synch app I have that compares large numbers of files is also slower. Have returned to .677 and everything working fine now.

Upgrade? I'm starting to think that the new behavior shield is being too aggressive and behaving like a HIPS. I set mine to ask just to see what would happen after seeing in the log file that it was "detecting" things it never had before. In addition to alerting to Comodo and Spamfighter trying to change registry entries related to their startup and auto updating procedures, it also threw up alerts about Irfanview, Malwarebytes and Auslogics Disk Defrag trying to change network settings when I attempted to manually check for updates. What is an AV (I only have the free version) doing checking network settings? Isn't that the job of the firewall which in my case was already set to accept connections by those applications?
Title: Re: INTRODUCING: New avast program update 5.1.864
Post by: Hermite15 on January 04, 2011, 03:37:32 PM
I don't have alert issues with the behavior shields but I had worse issues, posted already. I'm beginning to think that this shield should not be installed by default, but just as an option in the setup process, with a clear explanation as to what it does. I know it's set on "allow" by default, but still, there are conflicts and newbies running the free version will be lost when shit happens. And they're not likely to choose a custom install to dismiss the behavior shield inclusion.

So exceptionally I will agree with Dch48, the beh.sh. is not an AV feature. Doesn't mean that I won't use it personally, I probably will but again, it shouldn't be integrated by default.
Title: Re: INTRODUCING: New avast program update 5.1.864
Post by: Mr.Agent on January 04, 2011, 04:57:19 PM
Well default is "Allow" and if they fix the issue that you got Logos then its should be fine. If the behavior is too intrusive well set it to "Allow". Its dont matter if avast! come to come and with his file shield see that the file that the behavior did allow and is a virus well in a vps he will remove it. I hope they did made the behavior for when a threat is detecting by like file shield to deny it lol...

PS : Mine are set to "Ask" and i did not seen anything yet. I hope the "Ask" isnt bugged and wont allow if he is set to "Ask". Because i seen few things (programs) that did got allowed i dont know if its normal but we will see. As by default when you upgrade its set to "Allow" so its might be that.

After reading all the problems that people are having  :o
Haven't yet updated my computers ( 1 x laptop | 1 x Desktop ) to Avast 5.1.864

Not Sure What To Do!  :-\

Should I...
a) Wait for the next update to be released ( Hopefully reducing the risk of any Problems )
b) Do a clean install ( Lot of hard Work )
c) Just install the update ( Take the Risk )

Thanks!

I just installed from the GUI on 3 machines with no problems (W7x64 Pro, W7x64 Free. Vistax32 Free).  Dells seem to be having a few more problems (custom drivers?) than others, but otherwise your configuration seems simple enough to do it as a GUI upgrade.  What is your current Avast! version?

I always get the "password protected" message with the same old two or three unpacked files when I do a clean install.   In my case they are program setup files.   So I just moved the setup files into a folder that I created called "unscannable password protected" and put that folder in my list of Scan exclusions.   The message then goes away.

Of course one should make sure files that are unscannable are safe.

did you try loading in the "Safe Mode"

If you can do that you can uninstall 5.1.864 and return to an earlier version that worked for you.

If you have trouble finding that working version you can probably find it at FileHippo which keeps an archived list of previous software version downloads.

I  think maybe Avast 5.1 was released too fast.  I am going to wait for actually several weeks on this build.  My 5.0 is running like a champion.  Did any of you get a pop-up message about 5.1 being out?  I didn't, and I don't really want it, until problems with this release are resolved.  I still set my settings to "Ask When Update is Available." This helps me keep track. Usually, I will install the new version within a day to a week at most of notification, while watching the forum.

But I understand 5.1 has some new features, so maybe that is why there might be more bugs than in the past.

I've always been that way, update immeidately soon as a program is released or any type of update

Supposedly , there is an update coming in the next day or two regarding a BSOD issue . The next release will have a fix . So I have been told that most that have the BSOD issue will be fixed as they know the problem after seeing quite a few minidumps . Good Luck all !!!

Hi first of all may I say that I hope that all the Avast Team and forum uses have a happy healthy 2011.

My thoughts on 5.1.864 are as follows:

Until today I was using 5.1.864 and had no issues till today,
When I did a full system scan the other day the scan results said SOME FILES COULD NOT BE SCANNED and when I checked what was not scanned this is the results: ERROR ARCHIVE FILE PASSWORD PROTECTED when I was using 5.0 I NEVER GOT OR HAD ANY ERROR MESSAGES COME UP AT ALL..

I know this is a problem with 5.1.864 as I used another FREE AV to see if I got the same result but I DID NOT.
Also 5.1.864 started hanging and freezing my PC, I REALLY HOPE THAT THESE ISSUES WILL BE SORTED OUT SOON so that I can come back to Avast as I DO LIKE AND LOVE AVAST and I personally recommend Avast to family and friends.

I hope my issue will be taken into consideration and sorted our thanks.

happy avast user

Dear All,

Does anybody feel something wrong when we trying to do manual update?

If we appoint our cursor to the avast icon on the taskbar (right corner at taskbar), then you do a right click and choose Update >> Engine and Virus Definitions. It look that the update doesn't running as usual.

I am not sure if my opinion have a mistaken or not...

cheers,

This is a known problem. It's a minor bug in my opinion but they will probably fix it in the near future.

I think if users would clean their computers, I don't mean the outside ;D more often, keep all of their software including Windows and Drivers up to date, use the Windows Firewall if they are using Windows 7 and regularly defrag their computer hard drive/s then they would have a lot fewer problems with Avast software.

Just my opinion.

Absolutely agree on folks keeping there computers up to date, Firewalls on, and all that--cause i got 4 systems here i maintain and i'm not seeing any major issues with Avast 5.1.864, maybe a little minor issues, but overall working great, nice and speedy, all is well

That's fair enough, but if everything is working fine before the program update and then browsing slows , like in my experience, after the update, then how is that the PC's fault? I do all you say above and are very vigilent, but the truth is that the latest version of avast! is not as fast as the previous. But I can wear that because I am only using the free version right now, and I understand that free users beta test for those who pay. So I am sure that eventually a better version will be issued without the slow-down issues.  No complaints here, just common sense. :)

I agree. It's good general advice to keep your system clean and well functioning, but I had the experience of not having any video after installing version 5.1.864.
I have other anti- malware and spyware programs and have never had this happen with any of them nor with prev. avast updates.

I agree as well and did such...to my demise, I am using a Dell and it gave me the BSOD. Tonight, all is well and I did nothing different. Great job Avast Team...that was fast!

Not sure or if this should be posted here or somewhere else.. I just installed the beta and it dropped me back the the free version. Is there a key or file were supposed to use to test the higher version?

What beta are you talking about as 5.1.864 wasn't a beta but regular release ?
Did you download the correct version (there were three links) ?

Or did you do a clean install of the pre-release build (5.1.874), in which case you may need to re-enter your license.

Hi --- When I did this upgrade on my 32 Bit Windows 7 system I got a BLUE SCREEN when I replied to Reboot, and had to do a SYSTEM RESTORE to previous day to get my system back. System came back OK but AVAST was deactivated and would not start up. I Uninstalled the product and Reinstalled and the product came back up. I then did the engine upgrade to 5.1.864 and everything is now fine. Any ideas as to what happened? P.S. When I did this upgrade on my XP system everything worked fine.

This is what I downloaded
Quote
Free AV: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe
Pro AV: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_pro.exe
Internet Security: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_ais.exe

It was a clean install and I never seen a license.

You can generally only download what you have a license for, not to mention this 5.1.864 isn't a beta but a regular avast release. That is why there are the three versions.

So if you had paid for avast Pro and that was installed on your system (you should have a license for it), then you could simply have done a Program Update from the avastUI (avast User Interface).

Otherwise if you didn't have avast installed You coulf download any of these Pro or AIS versions on a 30 unrestricted trial; at which point you have to buy a license for it (and enter it) or it reverts to the free version.

Or you could download the free version of this product and register it through the avastUI, Maintenance, Registration section.

update went fine here, just a minor thing had to do two reboots. the first time avast was updated and ask for reboot and so i did. after reboot i noted avast booted up normally and faster then the previous build nice on there avast i like it:D how ever when i hold the mouse over the avast ball i got up a screen sayed avast was not active but i know it was. so i did a second reboot of my pc and now when i holding the mouse over the avast ball i get after a few second that is aktiv. Don't know it it could have been something during the update or not. but avast is running well so far on the new build.

keep up the good work avast team.

Started Avast and it showed new update to program was available.  Did the update and now my computer won't run with Avast starting at all.  Can't use anything either.  Had to start in Safe mode, turn Avast off and then reboot.  It now works without Avast running in background.  Other Problem now when I click on the Avast icon to start it it tells me I do not have permissions and that the file may have been moved or relocated.  This was a bad update as far as i know.  I have Win 7 64bit on an HP laptop with 4 gigs ram.  I can't run Malwarebytes now either.  This is crazy!

i suggest you try a clean installation of avast then. that will often fix it.

What do you recommend as an to take the older version of Avast off with?  Just the windows uninstaller?  I don't see that Avast has a true uninstaller to take it off?  Thanks

@ Craigb
Best to use the official aswclear5.exe file.

find it here (http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility) and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for multiple avast products, 4.8 and 5.0, etc.)

Yes but it is in a personal web space ~forejt rather than the official files location, http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear5.exe not to mention I normally point them to the http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility page as that gives the instructions also.

I don't see any sticky for that in the avast! Free/Pro/Suite forum.

I have no idea why that has been stickied as the OP has nothing to do with avast and is effectively posting a link gathered almost a year ago when avast 5 was released. At that point the original aswclear.exe was for only avast 4.8, that is why a special build was placed in forejt's web space.

So I have no idea if this has been kept up to date as it certainly hasn't followed the official file name change of aswClear5.exe either.

If that remains a sticky the link needs to be changed to the correct name and official download location, http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility.
