I have updated from avast free 5.0.667 to 5.1.864. I did this by clicking "update program" under maintenance.
I have three shields running (file system shield, network shield and webshield)
file system shield and network shield is not scanning anything.
file system shield says "files scanned / infected : 0 / 0"
network shield says "connections scanned / infected : 0 / 0"
webshield works though
the eicar test files are not picked up by the file system shield...
Ive tried rebooting several times,,,
any ideas?
Windows 7 ultimate 64-bit, no other security software running, intel i7 920 system
*UPDATE* : I uninstalled avast, rebooted windows and did a clean installation of avast 5.1.864...now it works normally.
looks like doing upgrade from a previous version is broken somehow?
-
I'm also having this problem.
-
Can you provide a link for 5.1.864 version? Can only find on for 5.0.667 on the site.

Thanks very much, should probably have looked on the forums a bit harder. All seems to be in working order now.
-
this is quite a serious bug in my opinion...
I wonder what caused it...
Im glad I clicked the "real-time shields" and saw the "files scanned 0" indicator, otherwise my computer would have been vulnerable without me knowing it.
Avast was reporting "Secured. your system is fully protected" when in fact the file system shield was doing nothing.
-
I suggest to re-install avast from scratch.
I had this problem with a beta build before but solved by scratch install.
-
This is annoying. I've had such problem during beta test which was later gone when i re-installed avast! so i couldn't reproduce it. I suggest you re-install avast!, that will fix the problem for sure. But i agree, it's problematic because avast! is showing that everything is fine but in relaity it's not scanning anything.
-
i also having problem with this..but after that when i remove the 5.0.677 & done a clean install of 5.1.864 then my problem solved :)
-
I have this problem too. :( ???
I have updated from avast free 5.0.667 to 5.1.864. I did this by clicking "update program" under maintenance.
file system shield says "files scanned / infected : 0 / 0".
The avast tray icon never moves when I open programs.
edit: I just fixed it by uninstall/rebooted windows and did a clean installation of avast 5.1.864...now it works normally, but I might not have even noticed the problem if I was not reading this forum! I have another PC with Win XP, it updated fine, maybe it is just a problem for Win 7 64 bit?
Windows 7 Professional 64-bit, MBAM Pro security software running, Intel i7 950 system
-
I noted this problem in the beta forum- I installed the very last beta over the stable release and ran into this issue.
-
This seems like a serious problem indeed since it doesn't seem to be an isolated event. :-[
Maybe it would be a smart idea to stop the auto update and investigate this further before too many users are affected. But there doesn't seem to be any particular rule for this problem to happen hm.
Do you guys maybe have 64bit Windows?
-
Do you guys maybe have 64bit Windows?
Yes, Windows 7 x64 here- running AIS.

I'm also having problem as well on my current system XP Pro SP3 lucky for I've clone my last backup before the new version came out so I'm back to Avast v5.0.677 :-[
Also I'm getting a lot of freeze up :'( on v5.1.864
-
hmm, using the built in updater i didnt get this problem, each of my shields seem to be working fine. :-\
-
Hmm.. Indeed this was reported by RejZoR in one of the beta builds but we could never simulate it here. The upgrade path from v4.8 to 5.1 was tested on a number of different systems and we couldn't find a single problem.
Now, it would be really useful to find out what's different about your systems.
To help us analyze the problem, please ZIP the following directories
C:\Program Files\ALWIL Software\Avast5
C:\ProgramData\ALWIL Software\Avast5
and upload to ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming (ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming)
Also, please add the files C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\asw*.sys and an export of the registry key HKLM\Software\ALWIL Software
We will analyze the files here and hopefully find out what makes your install different from a clean install.
Many thanks
Vlk
-
Vlk I can't give you what you need because I went back to v5.0.677 :'(
-
The upgrade path from v4.8 to 5.1 was tested on a number of different systems and we couldn't find a single problem.
In my case I was upgrading from the previous stable build (5.0.677) to the last version of the 5.1 beta that was released. Unfortunately I did a clean install so can't provide a zipped copy of the install dir.
-
Hi
I'm also having this problem on my 64bit Vista PC. Avast is practically dead - only the web shield seems to be active :-[.
Vlk, I cannot find the alwil software folder inside Program Files ???, although there is one under ProgramData.
Also, do you need all of the drivers in C:\Windows\System32\drivers?
Thanks
-
I'm also having this problem with Windows 7 x64 systems. Every one of them were completely "silent" after GUI update from build 5.0.677. x86 XPs updated ok. Fortunately Avast is so easy to re-install, so I ended up doing that.
Quite serious bug though, if people don't check their AV after update.

It depends where you installed the program to.
C:\Program Files\ALWIL Software\Avast5
is the default location, unless you changed it in the setup wizard.
Also, do you need all of the drivers in C:\Windows\System32\drivers?
No, sorry, I edited my post, we only need asw*.sys files (all of our drivers are named like this).
Thanks

Silly me - I could have thought of that :P
I've already sent you 3 files (I hope you've got them):
[ProgramData]Avast5 (Silent Assassin).zip
avast (Silent Assassin).reg
drivers (Silent Assassin).zip
I'm also sending you avast! Free Antivirus (Silent Assassin).zip which is the folder to which I installed avast.
Thanks
-
Thanks. One little thing: the registry export is from HKCU, not from HKLM. Could you please also do one from HKLM?
Thanks

You mean HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ALWIL Software? I don't have such an entry there ??? (see screenshot).

Oh you have 64-bit Windows, right?
Then it's HKLM\Software\WOW6432Node\ALWIL Software.
Thanks

OK, I've sent it. Look for avast (Silent Assassin) [new].reg

Thanks much. It looks like the driver files haven't updated (are still version 677).
Please try doing the following: copy the *.sys from
D:\PROGRAMY\avast! Free Antivirus\Setup\INF\x64
to
C:\Windows\System32\Drivers
(actually, you don't have to copy aswFW.sys, aswNdis.sys and aswNdis2.sys as these belong to the AIS firewall - but even if you do copy them, it will do no harm...).
After copying the files, reboot the computer. Does that solve the problem?
Thanks

When copying I get a message saying that I don't have the permission to do that (LOL - I'm the administrator ???).
I've disabled avast's self-defense module and it worked. I will reboot the computer now.
-
Hooray! Avast is working now :D!
However, there's still one thing - the behaviour shield isn't showing any activity ???. What's wrong?
-
There's one registry value missing. Namely, in
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\aswSP\Parameters,
create a REG_DWORD value called BehavShield and set it to 1.
Then reboot and see what happens.
Thanks
Vlk

Yeap - it's working :D.

When this (the behaviour shield issue) will be fixed? I don't want to edit the registry, because I hate doing that. Because of that issue I haven't updated to 5.1.864 and I'm still sticking with 5.0.677.

Probably tomorrow evening.
BTW if install from scratch (i.e. uninstall 5.0.677 and install 5.1.864) you shoudln't be impacted by any of the issues.

same thing here :-X

Ok. Do I need to only run the Avast removal tool to have a clean installation or do I have to delete manually Avast files or registry entries?
-
I have updated 3 machines, 1x32bit and 2x64bit Win7 , I have seen only one issue and that is IE9 64bit will not run virtualised everything else is fine so far.

Hello. My shields except for web aren't scanning either. So do I need to uninstall Avast! and reinstall?

I think this is related to your other issue in the topic you created, so follow the suggestions given there. http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=68623.0 (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=68623.0)

will this be fixed via VPS update or a new build?

New build

I was able to reproduce this bug on a fresh installation of windows 7 ultimate 64-bit (no programs installed except avast) running on virtualbox (default settings)
all I did was first install Avast! Free Antivirus 5.0.677 (custom installation with system field shield, network shield and webshield). Reboot. Then update to 5.1.864 through the gui.
Reboot. System shield and network shield are not doing anything, except webshield.
looks like this affects everyone that is running windows 7 64-bit
EDIT : I tried to do a non-custom installation of avast 5.0.677 , and then update to 5.1.864 ...everything works normally-
looks like a custom-installation of 5.0.677 (with some shields disabled) does not update to 5.1.864 properly in win7 64-bit!
-
This seems to be one more of those things that for whatever reason is only (or mostly) a problem for certain systems (in this case, it sounds like 64 bit Win 7 is particularly vulnerable). On my XP system, I went the update route rather than a clean uninstall/install, and all shields seem to be showing normal behavior on the first try.
-
Now this is intriguing as my win 7 64 bit - with an update from the gui worked perfectly. I wonder if there is a common programme running on the other systems that could be interfering. My only running security software is AIS and windows defender. I have little activity now on my behaviour shield but I have my trusted programmes allready inserted and have not use any new ones recently
-
essexboy : did u do a custom installation of 5.0.677 or did you have all shields running?
I think the bug is caused by trying to update a 5.0.677 with some shields disabled to 5.1.864 on win7 64bit
-
Yes I have all my shields running, even though I do not use IM or P2P. I could never see any point in turning them off as there is no overhead if they are not being used
-
Our analysis suggests that it only affects users of the Free Antivirus (and maybe Pro Antivirus), but not Internet Security.
Can you guys confirm that? Essexboy, are you running the IS?
-
Yes AIS ;D

My win 7 64 bit - with an update from the gui worked perfectly. I'm running avast free.

fnukyguy sayd: "I think the bug is caused by trying to update a 5.0.677 with some shields disabled to 5.1.864 on win7 64bit"
It happened to me with Avast Free and none of the shields disabled on win7 Pro 64bit
I do have MBAM Pro running.
-

No problem with AIS here. I've updated from the earlier beta.
-
No Problem here also (ais)

I'm running AIS and experienced this issue during the beta.

Yeap - it's working :D.
Thanks Vlk!
My Reg value was still set to 1.
But the BehavShield is not working
AND i am using the AIS!

I had the same issue (i.e., only Web Shield seemed to be working), on two different W7 64 bit systems upgraded (from 5.0.677) via the GUI. I also noticed, when I went to uninstall 5.1.864 (based on this thread), that Windows' "Programs & Features" control panel still indicated that 5.0.677 was installed. An uninstall/clean reinstall of 5.1.864 fixed the issues on both systems.
Glad to hear this is getting addressed.
PS - this was with the free version of Avast.

I have updated from avast free 5.0.667 to 5.1.864. I did this by clicking "update program" under maintenance.

Same deal here, Windows 7 Pro x64. I'm using Avast free. I updated by clicking "update program" under maintenance and had the same issue with most of the shields not working after I rebooted. Actually, the only shield that was working was the webshield for me.
I uninstalled 5.0.667 completely and installed 5.1.864 from scratch and it solved the problem. I grabbed the download link Vlk supplied in this post to download the new free version.
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=68564.0
I noticed the 5.1.864 installer does a quick system scan before it completes. I don't recall the old installers doing that.
-
I also noticed, when I went to uninstall 5.1.864 (based on this thread), that Windows' "Programs & Features" control panel still indicated that 5.0.677 was installed. An uninstall/clean reinstall of 5.1.864 fixed the issues on both systems.

I noticed that too... Win 7 64-bit
-
is this still going to be fixed for those who upgrade from 5.0 to 5.1 through the GUI and don't know how to do a clean install.. i know a few people on 5.0 who i assume will be upgraded to 5.1.864 or already have and they most likely will have this issue. they are not tech savy people so they wont know how to fix the problem.
-
i also would like to know when this is fixed/, i updated my ais through the gui on my xp box with no issues but have held off updating my 7x64 box until the issues are solved
-
@ burleyr07m
It would be best if you hid your students.crown.edu ID as spammers and scammers can harvest your email address.
It can be done by going to PROFILE then selecting Hide email address from public? in Account Related Settings under Modify Profile
It would also help to select your country in Forum Profile Information as it looks like you are in the USA.
-
same problem here..only web shield is working..should i make the changes in the registry or is it gonna be a program update soon?
-
There are reports in this topic that a clean reinstall also resolves this.
So you could try that rather than do any registry hack or wait for a program update.
-
I also had this issue. I was concerned when I noticed a lot of slow down when navigating folders, it would take a long time to populate the list or render the icons. I checked the File System Shield and noticed nothing was going on.
A clean install fixes this. But I'm very disappointed by this bug, since I have a lot of friends and family running Avast too, not they won't be properly protected after this update until I go and clean install for them... >:(

i see why you are disappointed and you have the right to be..but they didnt do it for purpose..if you are an avast user for long time, then you know that version 5.1 took long time and that's because they try hard to make it better..but we are humans(except eset that is a robot :P )and human error is always present either you see it or not..so yes they didnt fix a very nasty bug but only because they didnt see it and now they do their best to solve it the sooner possible..dont tell them anything and let them take the update when its ready(except of your friends who will browse internet a lot i suppose)...
-
Of course they didn't do it on purpose. But what was all the Beta testing for? Several people said they had this same issue during Beta.
It should have been weeded out before release. Rather large oversight.
-

It was reported yes, but not reproduced by those at avast
It stands to reason then that when it is released officially that when more people (who didn't partake in the beta test) who can get this problem report it, it is easier to diagnose...unfortunately there will inevitably be problems that will only arise (or be tracked down) after a general release...
Hmm.. Indeed this was reported by RejZoR in one of the beta builds but we could never simulate it here. The upgrade path from v4.8 to 5.1 was tested on a number of different systems and we couldn't find a single problem.

hi all, having just read through this thread i decided to check my real time shields & i found that no emails have been scanned since early august.
i then took the advice of other posters & did a clean install of 5.1.864 & sent myself an email which was not scanned outbound or inbound. i just wonder if anyone has any idea why this is happening & what i can do to solve it
thanks

Update i installed ais 5.1 via the update in gui on my 7x64 lappy and everything went smooth and all shields are scanning :)

If it is from early August then it is unrelated to this particular topic. So I suggest you start your own new topic, click the New Topic button here, http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2.0 (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2.0). Post your question there, under a topic subject 'emails not being scanned' or similar and we will try to help.
Post info on your Operating System, email program, what email service/ISP you are using and if it requires SSL (a secure encrypted connection).

hi DavidR & thanks for the reply,
i have'nt started a new topic as after reading your reply i realised that it must have been around august that i altered my email settings to "requires ssl" which i then remembered removes the avast scan. i unticked the boxes & 'voila' surprise, surprise its working ok lol .
sorry to have been any trouble & thanks again
llanedeyrnjack
-
You're welcome and if that was your problem, then there is a corresponding setting in avast to allow for SSL and for the emails to be scanned and that is why it needs to be done in a new topic if you want a full resolution.
-
I'm still with Ver 5.0.677, but of course I'm being prompted to update. This may sound dumb, but should I go ahead and update? I mean, is Avast aware of the bug and possibly fixed it now?
Thanks,
Slider
