Title: 5.1.864 system restore disaster... again (not behavior shield related)
Post by: Hermite15 on January 02, 2011, 10:01:41 PM
it has happened before, is happening now, and it will probably again. After deleting (not purposely, a tab I missed was checked ) some registry keys, I decided to go for quick sys restore. Unchecked the self-protection module is AIS, rebooted in safe mode, tried a few restore points, they all failed, for misc ridiculous reasons, shortcuts not restored etc...(lnk files). Okay, after my last try, I rebooted and couldn't boot anymore in safe mode, infinite loop when starting Windows (restart etc...). I tried "last known good", could boot in normal mode like that but after login in, black screen ;D.

 Rebooted again, inserted my Windows DVD and attempted to use a few restore points from there(in repair mode. Fortunately the last one (an undo one actually) worked. I got the message that it succeeded, rebooted in normal mode, login in >>> black screen again. Went back to safe mode: UNINSTALLED AVAST, REBOOTED IN NORMAL MODE, ALL WAS FINE AGAIN. THANKS.

 Guys, this sys restore issue (again nothing to do with the new behavior shield related sys restore point creation), this issue has been there for months and months, will it ever be fixed?

I have never achieved a successful system restore with avast 5 - whether or not self-defence was enabled. Windows 7 has announced that restore failed and something like "system repair" has kicked in both times (and fortunately - after a very long wait, succeeded).

@ mag: do you use bitlocker? ... yeah I was just wondering if bitlocker drivers could conflict with Avast when restoring a system.

@vlk is that possible?

No. But I have Mywinlocker installed (which I believe may be something similar: I never use it - it came pre-installed with the laptop).

okay I must google that...never heard... must be some HP or similar encryption system...

edit: okay so no, it can't be a problem, it's just about file/folder and containers (virtual disks) encryption.

@ Logos,

I think he is confusing threads.  He had another thread about problems with Acer machines.

@ Para-Noid,

Did you mean to post in this thread: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=68619.0 (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=68619.0) ?

Yep...sorry about that. I do know avast is working on these issues. I'm just in "waiting mode" till they get it fixed. Which, I know they will. Always have, always will. Just hang in there everybody. For those with Acer issues I advise using 5.0.677 (which is still good) till the next update.
