Post by: patclash on January 03, 2011, 06:19:18 PM
Hi,
I've update Avast from 5.0.677 to 5.1.864 and since my apps from http://portableapps.com/ on an external drive doesn't work  :-\
I have the message : there is no disk in the driver A ; when I insert a empty floppy disk in the driver the apps work  :o
(I have try on 2 different PC running with Win XP SP3)

So I try to uninstall the 5.1.864 version and reinstall the 5.0.677 version and now all the apps work fine again (Firefox Portable, Thunderbird Portable)and no more message box  ::)

Hi Patclash,

What is your installed avast on your system?

If you are using AIS, maybe you should check the firewall for application rule.

cheers,

I have the avast free version installed  ::)

Note : I have do a fresh installation of Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition (http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable) on a usb stick (Corsair):

with Avast Free version 5.0.677 this work perfectly;
with Avast Free version 5.1.864 : I have the message box (there is no disk in driver A...) and the pc freeze if I try to close this message box

Thanks for your attention

The machine is freezing even after doing an uninstall and clean install of 5.1.864, and you rebooted after installing?

when I insert a empty floppy disk in the driver A there is no message box and no freeze  ::)
And this is using which version?  v.677 or v.5.1?  Or having done an uninstall and clean install of 5.1?

this is with the 5.1.864 version ; (no problem with the 5.0.677 version that I have installed after uninstalled the 5.1.864 version and reboot)

no :(

so I uninstall the version 5.0.677 , reboot the pc;
then I reinstall version 5.1.864 and reboot;
same thing :(
(http://uppix.net/d/b/d/1370d856897ffc61204f01eacf71dt.jpg) (http://uppix.net/d/b/d/1370d856897ffc61204f01eacf71d.html)
if I try to close or clic on "annuler" or "continuer" of this box the pc freeze;

when I insert an empty floppy disk in A and clic on "recommencer"(try again)or clic on the [X] the message box disappears and FirefoxPortable open and work normaly.

This doesn't produce with the previous version 5.0.677 of Avast;
so there is a bug in the 5.1.864 version.

The reason you are still having problems is because you need to uninstall and do a clean install following these steps:

1. Save a copy of newest version of Avast (5.0.864) and save it to your HDD:
Free –  http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe (http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe)
2. Download the Avast Uninstall Utility, aswClear5.exe http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility) and save it to your HDD.
3. Disconnect from the Internet at this time.
4. Go to Control Panel and uninstall Avast through Add/Remove Programs if possible and reboot.
5. If Step 4 fails, boot into Safe Mode (http://Safe Mode) (hit F8 repeatedly) and run the Avast Uninstall Tool.  If you had a previous product or version of Avast on your machine, uninstall it at this time (4.0, 5.0, etc.).
6. Reboot.
7. Install the newest version of Avast and reboot.
8. Get Internet access and register your copy Free.
    Free – http://www.avast.com/registration-free-antivirus.php (http://www.avast.com/registration-free-antivirus.php)
9. Update the Avast definitions.

Let me know how this works for you.  Thank you.

I use PA.c as well without problems, however this is on vista and 7, systems without a floppy drive. The way I see it is that something to do with avast is accessing the floppy drive when you try to run one of the apps.

Quote
I can access of the file in my usb sticks without trouble
Does this mean you can open other files etc. besides the PA.c apps?

EDIT: a bit of a long shot, but this setting refers to floppy disks:

open avast! --> 'Real Time Shields' tab --> 'File System Shield' tab --> 'expert settings' --> 'Scan when attaching' tab --> UNcheck 'Scan diskette boot sectors...'

Like I said, long shot, but worth a try.

This issue is still present in 5.1.889. I had to disable the behaviour shield to sort it out.
