wouldn't I need root access to scan the entire machine what is the proper way to launch avast on my ubuntu I have an icon pined to a panel I tried setting the command in its properties  to

I have the slightest idea. But, it should be sudo avastgui not avastgu

you must be the very same user who owns the X Windows screen (thus, use avast cmdline version, when sudoing), OR, issue "xhost +" to allow root's app to draw on your screen too, OR, simply log-in as root into the X Windows.
