Title: Mouse Pointer Disappears!
Post by: dasaunders on January 04, 2011, 03:34:45 AM
Hey all,

Just changed from Avira to Avast 5.  Installed without a problem on my Windows XP system running SP3.  However, if my computer remains idle for longer than an hour the mouse cursor disappears and only a hard restart will casue it to reappear.  Have since gone back to Avira and have not experience the mouse pointer issue.  Anyone else have any similar problems or know of any solutions?

Thanks,

Doug ???

Hi dasaunders and Welcome: You could have tried a 'Repair' of the Avast installation. Instead of choosing Uninstall when in the Add and Remove Programs you should choose Repair as the installation may have been flawed in some way.
How did you remove Avira? What version of Avast did you install exactly?

Find Avira on http://uninstallers.blogspot.com/ run the uninstaller. If you Removed Avira in control panel than there may still be Avira Files/Drivers on your computer.  I hope this helps :)

Thanks for the advice.

I actually removed Avira by using CCleaners uninstall tool.  Maybe remnants of Avira were left behind and caused some conflict with Avast 5.

Hi: I would follow the advice given by CoolMario88cp and make sure all remnants of Avira are gone:
http://www.themisteriosos.com/uninstall-avira-antivir-completely.htm (http://www.themisteriosos.com/uninstall-avira-antivir-completely.htm)

I would also follow these instructions to ensure you get a Clean Install of Avast since the initial install was involved while there was probably Avira left on your system. Just to be sure. :-\

Download the latest version of Avast (5.1.864) for the product you need and save it to your HDD:

Free AV: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe (http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe)
Pro AV: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_pro.exe (http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_pro.exe)
Internet Security: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_ais.exe (http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_ais.exe)

Then download the Avast Clean up Utility http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility  (http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility) and save it to your hard drive where you can access it easily.
Please go to Start/Control Panel/Add and Remove Programs and choose Avast and click Remove and then Uninstall.(I f Avast is already uninstalled them just proceed to run aswClear in Safe Mode) Once the uninstall process is completed, Reboot your computer and when up and running, Reboot again into 'Safe Mode' and find the (aswClear v5) download you saved to your hard drive and run the Clean up tool. Make sure you first choose the version you want to cleanup and then run the tool, your computer will automatically reboot. Once up and running in Normal Mode, Install the latest version of Avast you saved to your hard drive and all should be fine. Please remember you need to choose the version in the Clean up tool that you have had installed on your system. If you have had both v.4 and v.5 installed, then you need to follow the ‘safe mode’ process twice; once for each version separately.
NOTE: Please run CCLeaner after you Reboot and before Clean install of Avast
