Title: ** HAVING ANY ISSUES WITH V5.1.864? Try a new pre-release build 5.1.874 **
Post by: Vlk on January 05, 2011, 10:32:18 PM
Now superseded by version 5.1.884.

Hi *,

we have just released a new pre-released build of avast, version number 5.1.874. This build is supposed to solve the majority (if not all) of the problems reported for the original v5.1.

If you're having any kind of issues with the current release build 5.1.864, we recommend trying this one -- hopefully, it will solve your problem.

Fixes include (but are not limited to):
- compatibility with Acer control software
- compatibility with the Game Guard application (although this is still work in progress, because of the hacks Game Guard is using)
- compatibility with a Dell wireless network adapter
- various 0xC0000005 and 0xC000007B errors (e.g. with some .NET applications)
- issues related to upgrades from v5.0 (inactive shields, missing right-click associations, missing 64-bit boot-time scanner etc)
- other possible hang/crash conditions (relatively rare but possible)
- performance related issues
- UI related issues

Your feedback is appreciated.

Just one question. Can this be installed over the top or clean install only?

Edit: For anyone wondering the download version is 5.1.874 and not 5.0.874.

Can also be installed over the top as well, of course.

Thanks

okay did an upgrade with the downloaded setup file (upgrade from the UI wasn't available, but I suppose this was wanted), rebooting was pretty long but all seems to be fine so far... just time will tell, must be using it a few hours and try misc system operations before I can tell anything.

Hi *,

we have just released a new pre-released build of avast, version number 5.1.874. This build is supposed to solve the majority (if not all) of the problems reported for the original v5.1.

Vlk,

This appears to fix the compatibility problem with Dell Broadcom-based wireless cards. I have installed the new version, plus the Behavior Shield, and have not experienced any Windows alerts so far.

Thanks very much to the entire Avast team. This kind of support is why I've stayed with Avast through some of the "hard times."

OK... so 1st problem for me:

Security Center says that avast! is deactivated when appears as Secure and with all shields ON. The icon rotates also.
When i try to execute the program (attach 3) the problem persists.
See attachments, please.

Thanks.

Anyone else notice the downloads read 5.0.874 not 5.1.874
Is it supposed to be that way??

I wouldn't worry much about that. After I performed the install, the application identifies itself as version 5.1.874.

Installed .874 over .864, pro version under W7x64.  Wasn't having any of the referenced problems and the latest version has not so far exhibited any new ones.  Security center recognizes it fine, BTW.

I'll say something if the problem appears again.

C'mon, this is not an official update (yet), so no wonder it's not available through the internal updater, isn't it? Or did you assume we'd detect your systems and offer the update to you, being sure you'd be keen on testing it? ;)

874 fixes the problems I found with 864 on my Acer Desktop running Windows 7 (64-bit):

(1) Quick Launch menu appeared blank and after several seconds the icons and text appeared

(2) "Recent Places" list in "Save As" dialog box appears empty and then gets populated so slowly that Windows reports Opera has stopped responding

(3) Spybot S&D's "Check for problems" scan runs VERY slowly

Uninstalling 864's Behavior Shield "fixed" these problems.

Used 874 installer to upgrade 864, rebooted, re-installed the Behavior Shield, rebooted again and now things are working better:

(1) Quick Launch menu appears with icons and text immediately

(2) "Recent Places" list now appears faster

(3) Spybot S&D's "Check for problems" scan runs at normal speed now

Vik when will it be put in the updater- I am assuming you are a waiting a few more days to make sure no one else has problems with it?

Just asking so i can tell my clients who have the pro version and free version to do the upgrade.

And thanks for the prompt fixes.  Avast is the first company I have ever seen listen to their users when there is an upgrade/update problem and act almost immediately.
I applaud you all!

http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=68708.0

Greetz, Red.

Boy I really love this stuff! I had .864 installed on both my systems and the only bug was the 'right click icon for update issue'.
On my laptop install .874 went great, initial reboot after install went smooth...tried the right click icon and choose update virus etc and it worked like a charm
HOWEVER...On my Desktop after initial .874 reboot from install the right click issue was not working.
It took a couple more boots and Whalla the right click to update bug is fixed.
A little extra messing around is what makes me smile ;D ;D
Even though I have not had issues on my CLEAN and Healthy Disk systems I thank the Avast Team as always for their dedication. ;)

It's very unlikely that's caused by avast. PFN_LIST_CORRUPT is one of the most complex crashes to solve - it's better to change GPU drivers or test your hardware (memory). PFN_* bsod means, internal kernel-mode memory structures were corrupted.

OK, I had the beta drivers found over at laptopvideo2go.com, and I just installed it, thinking it was gonna be good. But I ignored the part where it says "BETA" XD
Well, NVIDIA finally updated their driver database with one that's just a little step down from the one I'm using [266.44 on the laptopvideo2go website compared to 266.35 on NVIDIA's website], so I guess this one is a little less buggy, since NVIDIA "daringly" put it up there. Updated it in safe mode, and am now going to test it out.

My main issue since upgrading to 5.1.864, as I've posted somewhere on this forum before, is that my onboard video doesn't work on normal bootup- thus I have no picture on monitor even though I can hear windows xp booting up ok, via the sound.
I have to manually, via power button, shut down, sometimes several times, and then I get picture and normal boot up.
I don't have a dell or an acer, have a gateway, and use xp pro.
Never any problems like this till the upgrade.
Will this new update fix this problem as I don't think my specific issue was mentioned?
I don't want to screw things up any more than it allready is,
as at least I can boot up eventually right now and the uninstall in safe mode left many remnants.

Nope...Just uninstalled 5.0.677, downloaded 5.1.874, re-booted...no error messages. And I have an "Acer" laptop.
Install was smooth and .874 is now running pleasantly quietly in the background. In fact it seems everything loaded a little quicker. Just like the avast know and love.

To one and all thanks for providing this fantastic anti-virus software. A special thanks go to VIK(sp) for putting up with all the bugs and us.

Get rid of SpyBot S&D it's not worth the time or trouble. And the tea timer conflicts with avast. We recommend using MalwareBytes Free or Pro and Super Anti-Spyware Free. You will be better off with MBAB and SAS.

Will this latest update be available from within the program GUI at all? If not, do we need to uninstall current version before downloading and installing new version, or should I just wait? Sorry for being so thick. I am fairly new to avast! and have always had AV software that updated from within the program itself, hence my confusion.

Inserting license code issue.

Having got an installation error updating AIS 5.0.677 to 5.1.864, I uninstalled, ran Registry Mechanic, installed 5.1.874.
When prompted during installation I inserted the license code but when it finished, all shields were deactivated and license "expired" displayed, despite the expiry date showing as 13/8/2011. Inserting the same code a second time fixed it.

Its a new pre-release build.

See what Vlk said:

If you want the pre-release then go to the topic start and download the version of avast! you have.

As stated at the beginning of the thread, 5.1.874 isn't an official update. It's a pre-release fix for the issues listed. It won't be available in the UI, the eventual official update will.

Issues with V5.1.864 will not allow CorelDrawX5 to start. Application Error. Same with V5.1.874. Still not working. Still getting the 0xc0000005 Application Error.
Confirming the issue stated above. This is a real problem for me. What is the easiest way to go back to previous version until this is resolved? Thanks.

[If you want the pre-release then go to the topic start and download the version of avast! you have.

Thanks for the clarification. I have never had much luck with installing one version over another, and no one has said whether the current version needs to be removed first, so I will wait for the official update release. The browsing slow down isn't bad enough that I can't wait a little longer. How long do official updates usually take. Sorry for all the questions; still quite new here.

plutox or M Phillips, in case that you have Vista/Win7 OS, please go to "c:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\WER\ReportQueue" folder, are there any new created folders corresponding with your crashes (i.e. date time match)? If so, please compress them and send me it to kurtin@avast.com. If you have XP system, please compress corel draw executable and upload it on our ftp (instructions are here: http://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=18). Thanks!

Inserting the same code a second time fixed it.

still same issue here for me.

Hi for the A team again :)

Just installed the pre-release on a new pc with fresh installed OS (W7 32bit) and although the avast service is running the AvastUI was not loaded, i tried to open it manually but it throwed an error(see pic.)

Note: this is on fresh avast install, without restart.
Note_2: after restart all seems to be fine, avastui loaded.

Hi,
there's still a problem with the FW and uTorrent- CPU usage is increased (sometimes dramatically, ~100%). The problem was prsent in 5.0 and now in 5.1. I did a quick test of 874 in my VM (I have another product installed on my real machine until this gets fixed) and the increase in CPU usage is still there.
Here's the thread I posted earlier: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=68758.0
Is the issue being taken care of and if so is there any ETA on a fix? Thanks.

I've had this exact issue on all installs from scratch of Avast 5.1 builds, from the first beta up to 5.1.864 (I did an upgrade with 874 so I can't tell, but it would probably have been the same) ...ie again all shields off when rebooting after installing, expired license message, and second insertion of the license to fix the problem.

edit: setup log sent to vlk

So the file is there even at the moment the program reports "expired"? (you'll probably have to reinstall to simulate the situation)
And also, please have a look in HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\ALWIL Software\Avast\5.0, is there a value called "LicenseFile", and is it pointing to the file?

Using 5.1.864 with updates on manual

No noticeable problems with 5.1.864

I ran Program Update in the GUI to update to 5.1.874

It came back.

"You already have the current version" or something like that.

I will stay with 5.1.864 for a while longer.

Maybe even wait for 6.x before doing my next update

We shall see :)

Of course you can't update from the GUI as this is a pre-release build as the topic title and instructions at the start of the topic states.

You can only get it by downloading it using the links at the start of this topic.

okay I'll have a look next time I install from scratch... I admit I didn't look if it was there last time I had the expired message...and now of course yes the reg value is there, pointing to the file but this will have to be verified again next time after a clean setup.

Title: I can't reinstall Corel X5!

I have a big problem with Corel X5. After detecting that Corel didn't work anymore with the new update of Avast (5.1.864), I completely uninstalled Corel to reinstall it again, but since then I can't install it anymore. I've tried without Avast installed on my computer, with the new beta version posted here, and even with an earlier version of Avast, but the problem persists and I still getting this message:

"The setup has encountered a problem trying to configure your software. Can not access the folder c: / Documents and Settings / USER HERE / local settings / Temp / CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X5/15.0.0.486/CGS15/Setup.msi - The installation source for this product is not available. I'm running Windows XP. Any idea? Thanks!

Sorry but your response quoted above is a bit confusing to me.

I used the GUI to update from 5.0677 to 5.1.864 and it worked fine.

So it works to update to from a released version of AIS; i.e 5.0677 to a Beta, i.e. 5.1.864 using the GUI but not to update the 5.1.864 Beta to a 5.1.874 Pre-release using a GUI?

This is confusing to me because Firefox does not work that way.

For example you can't update from 3.x to 4.xBeta using the Firefox update feature.

However, once you have downloaded and installed the first Beta of Firefox 4.X all all subsequent Betas can be updated through Firefox without having to download the complete executable of new Beta release. I imagine that you will be able to update with Firefox all the way through the 4.xRC and onto the public release of 4.X. :), though only time will tell.

hey Nesivos, this is a pre-release, a pre-release version, meaning it's just for beta testers. Most people are already running the latest stable and official version called 5.1.864, and we don't want them to get an upgrade to a beta, and 874 is a beta. They will have an UI upgrade as soon as there's a new official build, non-beta, out.

edit: 5.1.864 is not a beta, that's why the upgrade was possible from the GUI in 5.0.677 ::)

Hi, first post in the forum since there were no problems in the last 5 years using Avast.

After upgrading successfully to 5.1.864 and restarting, there was a BSOD stating "aswsp.sys attempted to access a non paged area".
Rebooted and same message again. Uninstalled Avast in safe mode, downloaded the full 5.1.864 installer, reinstalled (all went smooth), performed a quick scan with no problem and after rebooting again the same BSOD.
I had to revert back to 5.0.677 were there is no problem.
System XP SP3

Hi, 5.1.874 installed with no problem during installation or after reboot, thanks people.

I have just puchased the Internet Security version of Avast, and can not get it working.

This is the scenario.

After installing the program - have also tried the newest version "5.1.874" - I reboot.

Now the problem shows it self.

I will not reach the desktop. Instead a message shows in a blue box.
It says "driver irql not less or equal" and shows some crash status at the botto, of the message.
then reboots again. And will only reach desktop in safemode.

Then in safemode when i open Avast, the firewall is off and can not be turn on.

How can I fix this and get started protecting my laptop.

My problem was BSOD when running OLD 16-bit programs, Micrografx Designer 4 from 1993 and the Concise Oxford Dictionary from 1996.  I had to uninstall the Behavior Shield in 864 to get these working again, but 874 works fine.

No this is a pre-release build which is seeking to resolve problems that some are having. If you aren't having any then 'you' personally don't need it; wait for the regular program update release.

That is confusing

Avast should really consider numbering their releases accordingly.

By looking at the release number there is no way to tell what type of release it is.

This is just bad news to have to rely on Avast people to post on the forum what kind of release it is rather than having the release number tell you.

Sorry, that is my opinion on this. :)

i would not think of having my clients do the upgrade to 1.864 now. I do not want to take the chance of them having problems so i told them not to click on the upgrader until the new one is out.  Why cause problems prior. I personally have no problems except the right click issue with 1.8.64 on one of my computers. I can wait till i see the new version in the updater

Many of my clients have dell laptops especially the ones that are having the wireless issue. I would think Avast would pull this version off the updater for now until they put the more stable one on so anyone who has a dell laptop doesn't do the upgrade and find they are not dead in the water.

I never had this error but heard a few times about it... seems to be C++ related. Not sure if Avast can do anything against it. Well the devs here will tell us...otherwise I'd advise to post about that on Technet (Microsoft forums).

ps: 1 also make sure that you got the latest C++ 2005 and 2008 installed.
2 if the issue is completely C++ unrelated, forgive me, I don't have a clue then.

It doesn't matter what's the most recent (most likely 2010, possibly even SP1 whose beta was released about a month ago) - the required redistributable has to match the version of the development tool the particular program was made in.
For avast!, it's VC 2008 SP1.
If the installation of the redistributable fails for some reason (probably some corruption in the side-by-side hell on the machine), the mentioned error appears when trying to start avast.

Many of my clients have dell laptops especially the ones that are having the wireless issue. I would think Avast would pull this version off the updater for now until they put the more stable one on so anyone who has a dell laptop doesn't do the upgrade and find they are not dead in the water.

That's an excellent idea. Why take the chance of creating more frustrated customers if you can avoid it?

ps: I'm on an ethernet connection.

I installed this version because the previous one was giving me trouble, but I still get the same error message.

"C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast5\AvastUI.exe

The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more detail."

Can someone help me!? I've been trying to find a solution to this for months and it usually winds up being a dead end.

Well you have exactly the same error as me, see this post : http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=68927.msg579317#msg579317

But after i did a restart the AvastUI started, did you tried to restart the machine after the install process ?

The side-by-side error so far is virtually always related to the c++ issue.

So yes I too think this error is unrelated to the 5.1.864 or 5.1.874 avast builds, but not having the correct C++ redistributable installed.

Just writing to confirm that the pre-release is working great compared to V5.1.864. BOOT time scan now works correctly (little slower than expected compared to my 4 year old Laptop with WIN XP-PRO running Avast as well) and it also doesn't automatically reschedule itself anymore (when it was not working anyway, in the previous version).

Boot into Windows, browsing, malware scan, running application etc, etc is now back to normal.

However, I do recommend a full clean reinstall, which is faster imho. In my case I updated over the previous official release and restarted, but the OS froze/crashed without an error and did not boot normally. Uninstalled in Safemode. Clean install ran without issue.

System: WIN7 64bit (all updates), C2D@3.8, 4 GB RAM, Creative Xi-FI Titanuim (no more audio issues with pre-release), Software Firewall -ZoneAlarm Pro (no issues with Avast), Teatimer running in Paranoid mode (not activated via Start-up though).

Uninstall the Behavior Shield. Control Panel -> Programs and Features -> avast -> Change -> untick the Behavior Shield box.
Corel X5 problem: all the following applies to both 32 & 64 bit Windows.

It seems necessary to fully deactivate the behaviour shield module to avoid the crash described earlier when attempting to run Corel X5 (both Draw & Paint programs). Merely turning the behaviour shield off within the Avast GUI does NOT solve the problem, nor does adding files to the exception list.

You can download a trial version of Corel X5 at

http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/gb/en/Product/1191272117978#versionTabview=tab1&tabview=tab7 (http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/gb/en/Product/1191272117978#versionTabview=tab1&tabview=tab7)

if you wish to see what happens for yourselves.

Is there anything more I can do to help you isolate the cause of this problem?

i just downloaded the installer for the free version that you gave us.  I have a test dell laptop that has this particular driver so i figured if it did not work- no great biggy.  This one is running xp pro sp3.(i had the older version before 5.1.854).
When clicking on the install and asking me if I wanted to upgrade- How come when it goes to upgrade it says it is version 5.1.854 instead of 5.1.874? I almost was hesitant to install it but i did anyway.  All went fine- no problem with dell wireless drivers -so far.  I opened the program and saw it did upgrade to the correct version though.

Will keep you posted if i find anything else weird happening.  I only tested the wireless and that is how i am typing to you all now.

Well since no one else seems to have had this problem or at least noticed it ill drop a note.
Since avast updated to 864 my start menu icons to about 5 secs to load after each reboot. I accidentally thought the problem come from microsoft onecare live which i ran online the same day avast updated so wasted alot of time trashing through registry and sux to no avail. Then i remembered the avast update and did an uninstall and presto. Start menu population instantly again.
With 874 this problem seems to have been fixed too.
Thx :)

I'm also seeing the 0xC0000005 error when I try to run a game called SimCity Societies. This is being caused by the Behavior Shield. When I uninstalled just the Behavior Shield, the game runs fine. Disabling the shield won't work, it has to be completely removed. It happens under both 864 and 874 builds. I'm running AIS under win7 ultimate 32-bit. No other issues noticed besides this one.

I just sent it to you (edited post above). And yes the license file is there.

Thanks

Verify that the source exists and that you can access it."

I'm running Windows XP. Any idea? Thanks!

Had the same problem with CorelDrawx5 after the Avast update. I had to clean a lot of files first, before it would re-install. Here is Corel's answer. Follow with care.

Just a quick question-- I'd like to wait for the full update to be available within the Avast! program, but until then I have to keep my Behavior Shield uninstalled to avoid the Dell Wireless LAN problem. Is it all right to leave it uninstalled for now, at least until the next version of Avast is available?

The beta release fixed the problem with Schwab Street Smart Pro as that will run again. However, I tried D-Link Monitor (a program that works with Skype) and that will not run. Not sure how many other programs are being impacted, but it still does not look like the fix is a complete remedy yet.

FOR AVAST TEAM.
On my system I had 2 major problems.
 I upgraded from 5.0.677 to 5.1.864 ....... ok.
 After I downloaded 5.1.874.
 I ran the file setup_av_free.exe ........ ok .... reboot ....
After rebooting I immediately start grinding to a halt, no icons loaded, no activity of HD.
Reboot, I run in safe mode the file aswclear5.exe.
 I removed avast 5.1.874.
Ok ... reboot, Windows started ...... regularly. Everything works.
 I ran setup_av_free.exe (5.1.874) ... ok.
Reboot ..... ok;....... Windows starts, all ok.
My system seems to work, avast works, but: problem!
"avast antivirus: Warning, your system is not secure."
Avast, however, seems to work .... What do I do?

My system: ASUS F3ESERIES, CPU COREDUO T5450, WIRELESS, XPPRO SP3 WHIT ALL UPDATES, 2GB RAM,ONLY SOFTWARE OF ASUS FOR MY NOTEBOOK.

I'm not sure what the reason is, but I also have had to do a dual reboot on a few of the occassions when installing a newer version. 5.1.874 was one of the times.
However, after the second reboot everything falls into place and Avast functions perfectly. I'm sure the team is aware of this and most certainly is on top of it. ;)

I agree with Asyn. Please try 5.1.874, it's worth it. I found it to be very stable and all components to be up and running. No problems after re-boot, all software actually seemed to load quicker than before. I think at the top it says 5.0.874 (it's really 5.1.874).

I am having a problem with both the 5.1.864 and the current 5.1.874.

In 5.1.874 while the long delays before the Programs menu and QuickLaunch becomes available to use has been fixed a Network issue still exists.

I have a home network and my email program resides on the other machine at the front of the house.  I access this email program (PmMail 2000, ok I know it is old) across the gigabit network from the second computer.  Both computers are running Windows 7 x86 Ultimate.

When I click on the Email icon for PmMail, the system freezes, only the mouse is able to move, nothing can be run, not even Task Manager, nor Sysinternals Process Explorer.. NOTHING.

I have to hold the power button for 4 seconds until the computer shuts off completely.

On reading some of the preceding messages in this forum, I tried removing the Behaviour component of Avast Free 5.1.874.  Now I can access the email program again.

As far as I know, this is the only issue remaining on this 5.1.874 release, at least on my systems and so far.

HTH,
Regards,
BobxT

Is this pre-release english only?

Running XP Pro SP3 here (old and slow PC).
With 5.1.864 I can't use the Behaviour Shield at all.

But before I install this to check if the BS works okay, I need to know if it's an english release only.

Thanks!

No. This contains all languages (same languages on version 5.0 and 5.1.864).

Well this beta version fixed this strange problem I had with programs on my USB...........why or how I've no idea.

But they occurred as soon as I installed the last problematic update.

Any reasons?

Another Network issue appeared on the other computer.
I have VirtualBox installed on another Win7 x86 computer and had updated VirtualBox before trying the new Avast Free.  When I installed either of the Avast betas, the network worked and worked through several and frequent reboots. UNTIL the next day.!

On the following day when rebooted no network was available.  Uninstalling the Avast beta fixed the networking problem.

So, I initially was blaming Avast Free, but I have since come to realise that Avast did NOT cause the problem but instead, Avast TRIGGERED the problem.

In the Device Manager, I noticed that there was TWO network interfaces for VirtualBox. One was "working" and the other was indicating a failure with a yellow mark and was a slightly different name. I assume that the prior VirtualBox update had changed the networking in some way.

I removed the duplicate VirtualBox network entry and rebooted.  Result - Networking is now fully working.  I have yet to try the Avast betas again, but I am confident that this particular network issue is likely to be gone.

Addition:-
Another day has flown by and the Networking stopped again.  This time I have uninstalled Avast Free and rebooted then reinstalled but without the Behaviour component of Avast Free 5.1.874. So far so good. What a dog..!

I have rebooted 3 times and still working.
I wonder what happens tomorrow..?

HTH,

BobxT

just wanted to chip in my 2cents worth. I haven't updated my siggy but I'm running on a gateway LT series netbook from verizon. Windows SP3, IE 8, avast! (can't get to the version as i'm currently running in safe mode) and a non current version of MBAM (which i need to update). Reason i'm running in safemode is because in normal my mouse and keyboard are no longer functionable. Last night approx 10pm CST my avast! alert popped up stating that an update for the program was available and to click to update. So i did. Ran the update and got the request to restart. I clicked no, finished my browsing and shut the PC down for the evening. Hubby turned the netbook on this morning, goes through all the start up procedures and opens to a blank desktop screen. no icons, no start bar/menu. we powered down the netbook, i restarted in safemode, which came up fine, and backed up pics as we recently had a hard drive failure. Restarted the pc in normal, icons and everything come up as normal. got clicked on IE8 to bring it up and nothing happens, just the icon was selected. Mouse wasn't functioning and find out keyboard is not either. powered down again, rebooted in safemode, did a system restore to 1/5/11, returned to normal mode. same issue. no keyboard or mouse function. rebooted to safe mode and here i am. I'm noticing though that in safemode my avast! is in a disabled status, and that once the pc is turned on, until opens and shows in the system tray, my mouse and keyboard work, once avast is running in the background it stops. So my next step is to disable avast! on startup and see if that helps. I'll be back in a bit to update.

This bug was already fixed (workaround: in safe mode, run regedit.exe and set HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\aswSP\Parameters\BehavShield = 0 and reboot). This will disable BehaviorShield until next program update.

So far this build is working fine for me. I only got a problem with the program update using the setup. With all previous builds (5.1.xxx) I had a freezing computer when I updated the program through the setup. Both my old P4 and my "new" Quad Core had these phenomenon. Though the last update worked fine on my P4, while it did not on my Quad Core. The only difference was, that I allowed the requested reboot on my P4 and told my Quad Core to restart later. Any one else noticed these phenomenon? It also happened with the build in updater (when I updated from 5.1.xxx to 5.1.yyy). It is a minor glitch for me, as the uninstall procedure, reboot and installation procedure works fine.

Right after upgrading 5.1.864, I also kept getting the "Acer ePower Management DMC has stopped working" message on reboot. I headed immediately to the forums to see if other members had the same issue as it was clear to me that it had to do with the Avast update.
I have now upgraded to 5.1.874, and all is well again, thanks for the fix!  :)

Occasionally the system hang when I open GOM and WNP. On Photoshop CS3 too. Lightroom 3 is fine so far.
I use XP SP3, other running software are WinPatrol 2010 Free and Online Armor 4.0.0.45. But I think they didn't caused the problem because they worked nicely with Avast on my XP SP3 system.

Update :

The system hang up again just several minutes ago when I opened Chrome 8 (Avast already updated to Avast 874)
I'll try to disable the behaviour shield. I'll report back later.

Thanks

You may want to update your OA to the latest version of 4.5.1.431 as this is a more stable version.  See if this helps.  I also use XP SP3 with Avast and all shields up on both Avast and OA with no problems.

RE Corel X5 - Fixed
I had the same problem opening Corel X5.  When I attempted to repair the Corel installation, I got this message which is related to Microsoft .NET  Also my computer slowed to a crawl.

Product: CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X5 -- Error 1704.An installation for Microsoft Visual Studio Tools for Applications 2.0 - ENU is currently suspended.  You must undo the changes made by that installation to continue.  Do you want to undo those changes?

I repaired Corel, then completely uninstalled the latest version of Avast and installed Avast version 5.  This solved all my problems.  However, this isn’t a solution and I find it hard to believe that anyone would publish this update that trashed so many computers.  Those who post here are aware of what is going on, but many more clueless computer users have the same problems but are unaware that Avast is to blame or how to fix the problem.

Add my complaint to the list of issues with the 5.1.864 update:

The update was offered through my Avast 5.1 program update module and installed normally. Upon reboot, I could not Explore or Empty my Windows Recycle Bin.

Windows XP Pro SP3 32-bit, fully patched. Comodo Firewall with Defense+. Exit Firewall and no change. Disable Avast File Shield and Recycle Bin was restored to full functionality, even with CCleaner. Enable Avast File Shield and the Recycle bin cannot be Explored or Emptied. Failures cause Windows Explorer to hang, forcing a hardware reset. This is a WinBook Laptop, rather old.

I then followed the advice in this Forum and did a full removal of Avast, using Revo Uninstaller and the Avast Removal Tool. (I decided to use the whole "belt and suspenders" approach.  :D ) I then installed a fresh copy of Avast 5 Free (from the Build 5.1.874 download link). I then rebooted. The Windows Recycle Bin was fully restored, and CCleaner and other utilities programs can empty the Bin as they did before.

There was definitely something which went wrong with this update. In my case, it involved the Avast File Shield module, possibly the Advanced Heuristics component.

In any event, I am glad to have the issue resolved. I like using Avast and would have been very disappointed to have to switch to something else on that laptop. I have been using Avast Free for three years now.

I think the 5.1.874 Build may be ready to be released to the public. It may be better than its predecessor, and may resolve many of the issues some of us have seen when Build 5.1.864 was applied as an overlay under Windows XP with SP3.

Edit: I just saw in another Thread that there is now yet another update to Avast. I'll try that one and report back. I think you folks are calling this one 5.1.884.

Update to my issue with the Windows XP Pro SP3 32-bit Recycle Bin and Avast 5.1.864:

I have been offered the newest release (Avast 5.1.884) through the usual Avast Program Update process.

Since updating the program through the interface to 5.1.884, I can report that there have been no further issues. This is the version currently being offered through the Avast Interface.

Thanks for the swift action on this problematic update.

I am having a problem with both the 5.1.864 and the current 5.1.874.

In 5.1.874 while the long delays before the Programs menu and QuickLaunch becomes available to use has been fixed a Network issue still exists.

As far as I know, this is the only issue remaining on this 5.1.874 release, at least on my systems and so far.

HTH,

I have updated to 5.1.889 Avast Free the problem still remains. And I have again uninstalled the Behaviour Shield.

This time it is worse, in that, if I click on any Desktop url link or Non IE browser (specifically Mozilla Seamonkey v2.0.11) then the whole Windows 7 x86 freezes with only the mouse able to move.

Strangely, on the same computer and booted from the second partition with Windows 7 x64, there is no problem with Avast 5.1.889.

I have scanned both partitions and there are NO viruses/malware/trojans/rootkits.

----
I also investigated a member of the Melbourne PC User Group club's problems under Windows XP SP3. He also has this same problem on one desktop computer but not on his wife's laptop, also XP Sp3.

Both are running Avast Free 5.1.889.  I fixed his lock ups the same way I fixed mine - uninstall the Behaviour Shield.

I had previously tried unticking the options in the Expert Settings of the Behaviour Shield and while it worked for a while, it became erratic and that is when I completely uninstalled the Behaviour Shield.

I should note that at no stage does the Behaviour Shield throw up any error messages or any indication it is even doing anything.

BobxT
