avast! has detected a secure connection from your mail program (process msimn.exed) to the IMAP server 74.125.159.109 (74.125.159.109).
This type of connection cannot be checked for viruses. Please disable SSL/TLS in your mail client so that the Mail Scanner can scan your mail. The Mail Scanner will provide the SSL/TLS security itself.
I get this message every time I get email on my gmail account. It can only be accessed via a SSL connection.
Makes the pop-up redundantly stupid.

That option is there. Mail Shield, Expert settings, SSL Accounts, see image.
First I don't use gmail:
However, what is more important is if gmail will work when you let avast handle the secure connection, e.g. disable the SST bit in your email client account settings for the mail account.
- avast! 5.x: SSL Problems The Mail Shield may not scan some e-mails - see http://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=458 (http://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=458).
