Title: *** NEW PRE-RELEASE UPDATE 5.1.884 NOW AVAILABLE ***
Post by: Vlk on January 10, 2011, 02:32:51 PM
This beta has now been replaced by a new official update, version number 5.1.889.
More info here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=69305.new#new

Thanks to everyone who helped testing.

Hi *,

we have just released a new pre-released build of avast, version number 5.1.884. This build is supposed to solve the remaining issues that were not fixed by the previous pre-release version 5.1.874.

We expect this to be a very short beta test before the update is finally pushed out to everyone (maybe less than 24 hours).

So, if you're having any kind of issues with the current release build 5.1.864 or 5.1.874, we recommend trying this one -- hopefully, it will solve your problem.

Fixes, compared to the previous pre-release build 5.1.874, include:
- solved a compatibility problem with CorelDraw X5
- solved a problem inserting a license file in the installation wizard

Your feedback is appreciated.

I may re-install it with this build but no behavior shield for me anymore.

Logos, please be more specific... does it mean behav shield show you 0/0 (in scanned/blocked)? Sometimes it takes some time than it receive events suitable for scanning.

Ho-chi-minh: All BETAs are updated to final public version automatically when it's available. You will be also notified by GUI there's a new final version so you won't miss it.

no it's not that but I started a thread recently where I mentioned several issues, including Windows firewall becoming unable to remain turned on (was turning off after each reboot) + "homegroup" being partially broken and no way to repair it. I had to re-install Windows (as my latest backup had the same issues). Can't tell if the behavior shield was responsible at all, but such things never happen with 5.0.

edit:to be honest I also gave a shot to two other security suites (just short tests) so I have no idea what made shit happen, if it's Avast or not. AIS firewall being turned on and homegroup computers being still accessible through the network folder, it took a few days until I realized that things were broken.

And I only noticed this yesterday :)

Title: Re: *** Hope this fixes the Boot time issue
Post by: gentle4ug on January 10, 2011, 03:47:43 PM
I encountered a boot time scan issue last night with .874.  Got a disc full error and was unable to complete the scan.  When attempting to "ignore" the file, it just went into and endless loop of trying to send the file to the chest.  Ended up exiting out of the scan.

This was after a complete removal, including the uninstaller, and clean install.  I'll try the new beta tonight.

i just saw in the updater on one of my machines the free version when i opened avast 5.1884 was available
I was on the beta pre release prior- 5.1874
Did the upgrade- asked for a reboot and so far all is fine

my other machine running the free vers1on 5.1864 (which btw i had no problems with it on this machine) doesn't have the upgrade yet.

Do you roll it out in bunches?

Also how come in the past it used to popup telling me that there was an upgrade.  Now it doesn't- why?

How is a user to know it needs an update unless they open it up and see it?

Something should popup or the icon in the startup should turn color or something to show there is an upgrade

now that i am at 5.1884 any future upgrades will only come if i download a pre release? and if I do not and just wait for the one that goes out to the general public I will not be able to get that one?

relax ;D upgrading manually to this pre-release (and only if you really need it) won't prevent you to be automatically prompted to upgrade to the final release :D

Personally if I had problems with 5.1.864, I would have first tried 5.1.874 to see if that resolved the problem with .864 and give feedback to the developers one way or another on what the problem was and if it was resolved or not. If not I would have then tried 5.1.884, but fortunately I didn't have any issues with 5.1.864.

That is the whole point of using the pre-release versions to see if it fixed your problem and even then you should only have been using the pre-release build if you had problems with 5.1.864, then you should have stuck with it if at all possible.

You don't have to install the interim pre-release builds.

Hi All.
 Hi Avast Team.
 We did not! No good!
Explorer freezes when I try to access a folder containing the EXE file.
Exe files are made with QB64 compiler (see http://www.qb64.net), which compiles the source code with "MinGW GCC compiler (see http://www.mingw.org/).
In practice with 5.1.884 I can no longer access the folder.
I am forced to remove the explorer process from task manager.
Explorer goes to reboot and the icons are reloaded (bad).
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling from scratch, but nothing to do!.
I uninstalled the BS, but nothing to do.
Removing avast back to have access to the folder. Install avast and again the problem.
I am forced to reinstall 5.1.874. Let's hope so.
 Help me avast team.
Tell me what I do and I have to send.
Now reboot and you do know what happened (reinstall 5.1.874 from scratch).

Well, can you pack a few of those executables (with avast! disabled) and upload them to ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming (ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming) ?

Also, it may be useful to have a dump of the frozen Explorer.exe - if you could do that. A tool to create the dump is here (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=23283.msg193594#msg193594) (the problem is old and unrelated, in your case we'd be interested in Explorer.exe)

Eureka!! News for You Igor.
I found the cause of the problem.
When the transient cache is active (and persistent cache turned off) the problem occurs.
I then disabled the transient cache and the problem disappeared.
Then I reinstalled the 5.1.884. .... everything ok.
So I guess the problem is really a kind of conflict caused by the transient cache management module (at least on my PC).
The same problem occurred with the jpg image and now I remember that the transient cache was enabled.
This I had reported previously on this forum (File.jpg).
As regards the sending of file.exe, surely I can send them there if you want it.
My collaboration to you is total.
Just give me some specific statements regarding the generation of the dump explorer.(ok ok i see the link...sorry :))
 Thank you very much.

Update:
So just downloaded from GUI of build .874.. avast! asked for reboot and I said 'Yes'.
Reboot occurred with no problems. Boot time was fine.
After boot, avast! appeared as 'Secure' and with shields ON and working.

I will now perform some basic actions to see if it's everything OK.

Thanks.

As I posted in another thread, I updated the Avast Free Program to Version 5.1.864 and had a problem with the Avast File Shield. When engaged this Shield blocked Explorer from accessing my Windows XP Pro SP3 32-bit Recycle Bin in all Accounts on my WinBook Laptop. When Explorer was blocked, Windows froze and had to be restarted with a hardware reset.

I removed Avast completely, and installed Avast 5.1.874 beta and the problem went away.

Since updating the program through the interface to 5.1.884, I can report that there have been no further issues. This is the version currently being offered through the Avast Interface.

Thanks for the swift action on this problematic update.

Hi RC Primak.
I wanted to ask if the "transient cache" was activated at the time of freezing of explorer. Yes?

I had Avast Version 5.0.677 on my computer. I just tried installing the latest version via the "Update Program" link in the software. I don't know what version it tried to install on my computer, but did it ever screw things up! My computer froze on starting, and I had to do a system restore. Even then, I couldn't get Avast to start, and had to uninstall it. Now I've got 5.0.545 on my computer. How can I get back to 5.0.677?

@ pk: I saw in another thread that you advised a poster to uninstall the firewall (in AIS) until the next release. So would you say that the issue I related were caused by the firewall definitely or may be or no way? :) ... just wondering. (talking about Windows firewall switching itself off and homegroup interface half broken). I don't have these issues right now with 894. Happened while I was using 874... not even sure that was avast related.

I still have 5.1.864 and continue with the issue of no video on 1st boot of win xp.
Have to manually shut down via power button and then turn on to boot again to get video.
Haven't tried the prev. beta 5.1.774 as my issue wasn't mentioned, and neither was it mentioned for this beta update.
Already uninstalled via uninstall utility in safe mode and reinstalled 5.1.864 with remnants still left on computer.
What would you advise at this point?  To go back to an earlier release or update to the prev. beta or to this one- 5.1.884?
Also, is it advisable to uninstall all I can find of avast on my computer before any updates?
Thanks,
Ken.

kenf, I suggest an installation from scratch:

1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html) and save it.
2. Download the latest avast! (http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.html) version and save it.
3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode (http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml) and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode (http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml) and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you've run it.
5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
6. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
7. Check and post the results. If, for any reason, you did not solve, try doing the step 3 in Safe Mode anyway.

The user got quite a lot of BSODs in firewall driver (maybe MS released a new Windows KB update which affected our firewall code), so it's better for him to disable/uninstall avast firewall until we fix it. I'll forward your question to lukor, he is the one you should discuss fw problems with.

A small saga:

WinXP SP3 Avast Free 5.1.864 started to freeze on boot at WinXP desktop for the first time today. Seems to be a problem with Asus Smartdoctor util. I only use it for GPU fan control. Nothing else works due to proprietary fan monitor chip. Manual update to 8.1.874 OK but on reboot the tray icon warns that shields are inactive. Disabling/re-enabling all shields solves the problem 'til next reboot. Auto-update to 5.1.884 had same result with freezing at desktop due to Smartdoc. I noticed in Avast troubleshooting tab that load after other services was selected. Once unselected, reboots have been OK. I'm now loading Smartdoc via startup folder instead of reg run key to init it later in the stack.

Win7 x86/x64 update from 5.1.874 to 5.1.884 via internal update OK.

I updated the rig in my sig from AIS 5.1.864 to 5.1.884 today and have since noticed I no longer have any behavior shield activity. I have rebooted several times throughout the day and nothing. When I was running 5.1.864 I always had activity in the statistics after a boot and several times a day during normal usage. Other shields seem to be working as I have activity. Has anyone else noticed the lack of activity with the behavior shield? I'm going to try a repair install and if needed a clean install and see what happens.

Behavior shield still not working here.
(free version, 884 build, XP Pro SP3)
Worse, I get a red X on the tray icon, and Avast is completely inoperative.
(the GUI opens but all services are down)
Once I disable the BS through the setup and reboot, Avast works fine again. (but no BS, of course)

I'll try Avast 5.1.884, I'm downloading right now.

I still got 'hang' problem when I opened Photoshop CS3 under the 5.1.874, with Behaviour Shield disabled.
The PS startup run normally, but when it was on the editor screen the system just freezed. I restarted my PC, tried open PS again it run normally. It's strange. Never got this problem under Avast 5.0 or the version before  5.1.864.
The other freezed / hang issues are on GOM, Chrome 8, and Media Player Classic like I've written before. But it looks fine so far with Avast 874.

Hello everybody

First of all i would like to thank you the great work for this antivirus progam.

My Name is Zak, I'm form Hungary. I use avast! free since about 4.3 or so... and i'm satisfied with it.
Yesterday I instaled 5.1.864 version wich the avast! client offered... restarted pc, and when welcome logo come out(I use Win XP Profesional SP3) i thought it might be some problem, it took about 15 min for XP to stand up, before update it was normaly 2-3 min. As i tought if everything works it would be ok.. but not. Sometimes when i used pc it freezed like i can use the mouse on the table but cannot use start menu canot click on icons, only 1-2 mins later. I checked the forums and see that not i was the first person with problems and tried out the 2 update( 5.1.874, 5.1.884 ) and still have same problems. And i read that some ppl have Game Guard problems, here are same problems too i tried with the client offered version and the other 2 i found up here, but still dont work for me. I play on Cabal Online Europe. I reinstaled the 5.0 version and everything is fine now.

I like avast! much i keep this old version up until you guys solve the problems or i wait for the 5.2 version or maybe the new 6.0.

Keep up the good work and thank you again, avast! saved me from lots of times to reinstall my pc :)

Sincerely
Zak

As the avast devs said, it's now analyzing and sending them the results, so the real thing(this means auto deciding rule) to be soon implemented, if i'm  not wrong in  late Q1.

Hi Sir, it's an online game Cabal (Philippine version). I installed .884 and still the game won't start. It only shows the gameguard splash screen then nothing happens anymore the game simply would not load. After a few minutes I access windows task manager and I can't even see the cabal executable running. I'm using Windows XP Pro SP3 with the latest updates installed. Now I'm back to .6077 and it's all running fine. Could it be that the game itself is what's conflicting with Avast and not gameguard?

After 24 hrs I still had no behavior shield activity so I did a repair followed by a reboot and now the behavior shield is working again. I find no other problems with 5.1.884 so far. It seems to be a trend that updates fail to work correctly. IMO this is something that must be fixed.

Good evening!

I regret to tell you, that the problems with screenreaders still exist, some Jawsusers told me, that htey have even more problems than i with Window-Eyes. For in window-Eyes allmost everything works fine axept what I will tell here again now. I had very good contact with Jonathan Omer but I will repeat the probleme here again.
Hello!
I had contact with you for problems in Avast 5 and contextmenus. In 5.1
Beta 307 the contextmenu in the systray now works veery fine, thank you
very much. But there are still problems with Contextmenu in the virus
container. When I set the cursor on an entry, I can open the contextmenü
and Window-Eyes reads the contextentry. But I can not set any action,
not by pressing enter and not by pressing space. I can take the tabkey
and mus count, on which entry the Tabkey is sitting, for Window-Eyes is
silent, when I take the tabkey. The same happens with NVDA. but when I
have the Tabkey on the right place, I can set the action with space, for
example, when tab is pressed once and I take space the Deletedialogue
opens and so on. It would be very nice, if the action could be set in
the contextmenü or the entries were spokenn by pressing the tabkey.
I relly hope that this could be fixed in one of the next Versions.

Tank you very much and
best regards

Rothaut

Hi all...

I was using Avast! Free 5.1.864 and had the constant pop-up window, "Dell wireless WLAN card wireless network controller stopped working and was closed" on my Dell Inspiron 1501.

I downloaded the pre-release Update for Avast! Free ver. 5.1884 and installed it on top of the version that was running (5.1.864), rebooted and NO MORE MESSAGE!

I'm excited because I was able to fix this issue myself and with the help of the postings in your forum. Thanks for all of your help!

Freezing...
Can you manual generate a dump: when the machine is in stalled state, hold down the rightmost CTRL key, and press the SCROLL LOCK key twice. This will cause a machine to 'blue-screen' and dump of memory will start.
In notebooks without the right most CTRL key, see http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=51847.msg440718#msg440718

To generate full dump instead of only kernel (or small dump), see http://www.msfn.org/board/creating-memory-dumps-t130005.html or http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=52652.msg446063#msg446063

Please, zip and upload the C:\Windows\Memory.dmp file to this anonymous ftp server: ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming/ (ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming/)
Post back.

Hi *,

we have just released a new pre-released build of avast, version number 5.1.884. This build is supposed to solve the remaining issues that were not fixed by the previous pre-release version 5.1.874.

Vik,

Running XP PRO SP3 here with 768Megs Ram  and no problems so far. Any issues you might want us to look at?

Much thanks.

anyone know yet when the new version will be put in the updater?  I am on one of my client machines now and it is still showing " a new update version of 5.0864 and she has one of the laptops in question so i do not want to upgrade her for fear she will loose the internet and i really do not want to travel 20miles to her home to fix this.

All my clients are on hold until the new updater is put in as version 5.1 whatever

Also will it show up as this new version ready for upgrade once you open the program in the maintenance tab?
thanks

Behavior shield still not working here.
(free version, 884 build, XP Pro SP3)
Worse, I get a red X on the tray icon, and Avast is completely inoperative.
(the GUI opens but all services are down)
Once I disable the BS through the setup and reboot, Avast works fine again. (but no BS, of course)

Regards,
François

Did a complete uninstall, rebooted, ran the cleanup utility, rebooted again, installed 884 from scratch.
At that point, the Behaviour Shield was working, but on next reboot, all services were disabled.
Had no choice to disable the BS once again.

Windows XP SP3, just tried to update from 5.0.677 to 5.1.884, got a Setup Selfextract error:  'An error 0 (00000000) has occured.  Last performed operation was:  spawning'

Guess I'll wait till the bugs are worked out.       -kd5-

@Francois Blais, the question was directed at you... if you have any unp* files from recent time in avast "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Alwil Software\Avast5\log" folder, please compress them & send me it to kurtin@avast.com. Please include setup.log files ("c:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast5\Setup\setup.log"). Thanks

@kd5, what's in setup log file? You can copy&paste it to a file and attach it here.

Manually updating via the application only updated to 864.  Subsequent attempt to install the 884 update first informed me there were no updates (that I had the latest version), then popped up that same Selfextract error.

Guess I'll wait till the bugs are worked out.       -kd5-

I am not sure that this post is in the correct thread but I do use AIS and have updated to 5.1.884.

I have at the suggestion of someone on the Avast Forum used Dr. Web as one my secondary scans.

Prior to last night I had always used it in the Quick Scan mode.

Prior to last night neither AIS, Malwarebytes, SAS, HouseCall, HitmanPro or Dr. Web were identifying any Wild-Tangent related viruses/Malware.

Anyway, last night or more precisely last last afternoon I decided to do a complete scan with Dr. Web.

I learned something and found something.

Learned
-------------
1.  The systems folders and files on Windows 7 are hidden.  Clicking "Show hidden files, folder and drives" does not show the systems folders and files.
2.  You have to unclick "Hide Protected Operating System Files" to see the the Systems folders and files.
3.  In Windows 7 the "Documents and Settings" folder is actually a link to files that are located in/under the System folder named "Users"

Found
--------------
1.  The complete scan in Dr. Web found two infected files and one suspicious file in one of the the Wild-Tangent folders located in a normally hidden by Windows 7 System folder and files and quarantined them.  These files were not being identified by Avast in my "Nightly Scan"  My Nightly scan was set to scan "The System Drive", "Memory" etc along with my entire internal drive.  My internal hard drive is partitioned into multiple logical drives.  I had "Recognize File Types By Their Content" clicked.

Action
------------
1.  I don't play Wild-Tangent so i deleted the Wind-Tangent files quarantined by Dr. Web.  I also deleted all the other Wild-Tangent files which happen to only be located in normally hidden; i.e by W7 default, Windows 7 hidden operating system folders and files, not just the Hidden Windows 7 non-operating system folders and files.  Clicking on "Show hidden files, folder and drives" will not show these folders and files unless you also unclick "Hide Protected Operating System Files".

2.  I changed my Nightly Scan to "Scan all files" under Setting-Scan-File Types

Questions
--------------
1. Does AIS scan W7 hidden by default "Operating System Protected Files" when the settings in Setting-Scan-File Type is not set to "Scan All Files" even though it is set to scan "System Drive", "Memory" etc "Recognize File Types By Their Content"?
2. Does AIS scan W7 hidden by default "Operating System Protected Files" when the Setting-Scan-File Types is set to "Scan all files"

If the answers to question #1 is yes then these three files identified by Dr.Web as infected/suspicious are either False Positives or AIS is not identifying them as infected/suspicious files.

Thanks :)

you must download the package with 884 build and update using it - this build isn't official, that's why avast GUI (build 864) doesn't see it

There's no "setup" folder either, and the sole setup.log file I found was in the log folder.

If I remember correctly from the forum,

The update notification pop-up schedule is between 12-24 hours after auto notification release, and random 24 hour intervals after that.  For Avast 5, users always have the option whether or not to download the new version.

Is that right, Avast Team, about the GUI pop-up notification times?

upgrading through GUI (manual or auto):

1 official releases aren't updated to betas for obvious reasons
2 betas are updated to newest beta
3 betas are updated to new official release when it's out

Yeah I am also hitting the F5 key every few seconds to see if there is the final update. Without this update my life makes no sense, because I have nothing else to do than to wait for this update. In fact avast! IS MY LIFE. I tried to search for the "THINK" key on myself for a while, but when I found and hit it, nothing happens. I guess because nothing is attached to it :) Therefore I spent hours now to wait for this update.

I got the update from 5.1.874 to 5.1.884 using the build in updater.

Btw. the version is running fine. I only have to restart the computer directly after applying a program update or the boot will hang / freeze (programs stop to load in windows). But that is a minor issue to me now. Or can I restart the computer later inside the avast GUI?

Yes?

Sorry about the long delay in replying, but I have not been following this Thread. My issue is resolved, and I saw no reason to continue the discussion.

I see from an earlier post that you thought you had a similar issue to mine. Even when the symptoms look similar, in Windows a more specific freeze involving only one Explorer function can mean something very different from a general Explorer freezing problem. My issue was (thankfully) very specific. And this is why I suspect the update had a bad parameter somewhere, or a bad path, and the File Shield was "protecting" the Recycle Bin from being changed by Windows Explorer. Hence my freezing issue. The next update seems to have completely solved my issue.

I do not know nor care what the Avast "Transient Cache" is, nor how it works.

I did do a complete Avast Uninstall and reinstall from the Avast interim update version .864 which froze on Windows Explorer when trying to open the Recycle Bin. This happened as I installed the .874 Build. And that was when my issue disappeared. There should have been no "Transient Cache" present after the first reboot, if there was even such content before that reboot. Still, before that clean reinstall, who knows?

Build .864 was in my experience, just a bad update. Period. The Avast staff have admitted as much in this Thread and others at this Forum.

Updating to the most recent Build (.884) completely solved the issue, and my update methods were identical for both Builds (.874 and .884). The Windows Recycle Bin issue has not recurred with the current (.884) Build. In conclusion, I would not expect that any "Transient Cache" should have anything whatsoever to do with my (.864) issue.

In any event, I am not going to downgrade just to try to reproduce this time-consuming and frustrating incident. I just want Avast to work. Which most of the time, it does.
