A friend of mine has been waiting since the last release for it to automatically update. How long does it take for the program to find it and update the program to the newest one?

what version does he have ? latest official release is 5.1.864

open avast > settings ( top right corner ) > updates
is program update on Automatic ? if so it should have done it....i guess

I think that the 5.1.864 update is on hold, given they are working on fixes released in the 5.1.664, 5.1.874 and 5.1.884 pre-release builds.
The last pre-release build, 5.1.884 is expected to be released very soon as a regular update release, this would mean 5.1.864 would effectively be skipped for those that don't have it already.

So when should the auto update come out for the next version?

That depends on if as expected the latest pre-release resolves the existing problem, so there can't be a fixed deadline, but it is hoped to be within 24hrs.
