OK, I have auto updates off. Here are the text cues I receive when attempting to manually update:
"Current Version: 5.1.864"
"A new version of the program is available! Latest program version: 5.1.889"
Then once i click the "Update Program" button I receive:
"Last encountered error: The system cannot find the file specified."
"Total time 2s"
The info is much like saying "I need to find a particular human." and then nothing else...
Obviously, My question is: "Which file?"
OS: Windows XP Pro 32bit

Didn't find such problem on my update procedure [avast! 5.1.884 Pr => avast 5.1.889]..

It took me a couple of attempt's to get it to work but it did eventually, first attempt i got the error then staight away i tried again and it worked ???
If you do decide to download the new copy there is no need to delet your existing, just install over the top.

I had the same error trying to update 5.1.884 to 5.1.889, trying several times for about an hour. Finally, I downloaded the 5.1.889 installer from http://download833.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free_eng.exe (http://download833.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free_eng.exe) and did an overinstall in a Administrator account. I now have Avast Free 5.1.889 installed, all shields are working(except Mail Shield which I've disabled some while ago). Did a Quick Scan, and then a Boot Scan.
Before all this, the definitions updated to 110113-0. Now with 5.1.889, I get the same "Last encountered error: The system cannot find the file specified." when I manually check for VPS updates.
I'm wondering if some of the Avast servers are misconfigured.

PS I think it's related to the update from a beta build (or is anyone here experiencing the same problem when upgrading from a release build? - i.e. 5.1.864 or 5.0.677). There are some files that have same names in both beta and release builds, and this may cause some confusion to the updater. If my hypothesis is correct, it will correct itself with the next virus defs update, due in a few hours.

I've sent my setup.log to your email address. Hopefully, it will help. Also, I did attempt a repair via Add/Remove Programs, to no avail.

I just tried again with my current version, 5.1.864, it came up at 2s as server.def. Cannot find the file. I am downloading 5.1.889 and will install over 5.1.864. Installing worked well, but could not update, or say up to date.
Error message as follows:
Last encountered error: The system Cannot find the file specified.
Total time: 7s
servers.def.vpx was found
servers.def was not found
Looks like this is at the server end of the connection

I have 5.1.884 yet Avast is showing that there is a new version of the software 5.1.864. Also have defn a318mp.avast.com

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. This has in the past resolved this out of sync issue between reported and actual VPS version. You may need to reboot after the repair.

With Auto Detect Proxy, avast now tells me that I am running the latest program and VPS version. There are no proxy settings in Internet Explorer at all, and direct connection (no proxy) has worked in all previous versions of Avast, including v4.x.

I've never had a proxy in Internet Explorer settings. Only with this 5.1.889 update did Direct Connection setting cause problems with Avast, and it started occurring during the GUI update from 5.1.884 PR. :P :-\ ???

I think it somewhat strange if it worked with 5.1.884 I would have though it would work with 5.1.889.
I'm on XP Pro and on win7 starter (clean install of 5.1.864 and UI update to 5.1.889) and both work. I did the beta testing on my XP Pro system and that was set to direct connection and the updates worked right up to 5.1.863 (just before 5.1.964).
Unfortunately after the beta testing I did a clean reinstall on my XP Pro system and that is set to Auto detect, so I didn't notice any problem in 5.1.864 nor when I did a program update from the UI to the 5.1.889 build as it was still set to the default Auto detect.
A quick test changing to Direct connection (no proxy) resulted in the error, see image, I don't know what file it can't find as that would seem unrelated to the proxy settings as it doesn't even seem to get that far.
So anyone that had previously set their proxy setting to Direct connection if they didn't do a clean install of 5.1.889 (and possibly 5.1.864 or PR builds) could well fall foul of this apparent problem with the Direct connection option.
So my feeling there is something wrong in the actual update processing if Direct connection is selected, why it reports a missing file (unless that file is the one in image2, but that is located on the setup folder, image3), rather than unable to connect (which I would have expected) is something for the developers to chase down.

I agree. And, I'd rather have Avast set to Direct Connection. It isn't a deal breaker, and it can be fixed during an update of greater urgency. No need for a new release just for this, as long as people know the workaround.

Well setting to direct connection is likely to cause some issues also, as some people do use a proxy to connect (and updates would also fail) and that should be reflected in the IE connection settings. So in theory the Auto detect should be the safest option.

I decided to download the full install executable in the first message of the forum instead of sending anyone my logs (makes me shiver).
Install went well, no issues upon reboot. However I decided to click on the "Update Program" button as a test, post install, and it told me the program was up to date and downloaded the latest virus definitions as well. Since one button obviously does the job, why have two?
Something peculiar though, I got the same error after the install when clicking the "Update Engine and Virus Definitions" button, which seemed to work fine prior to the install, namely:
"Last encountered error: The system cannot find the file specified."
"Total time 2s"
Of course following the advice in this thread about changing to "auto detect" under "proxy settings" seems to have fixed the problem. Not only have I never used IE but I've uninstalled it as much as MS has allowed me to.
It could be me, I used to own an Amiga 1000, but it seems as though some people make things more complicated than it needs to be. I find myself wondering why any company such as MS could ever achieve such a monopoly in the first place. ;-)

I also checked my settings in Proxy Settings, when it is set to Direct Connect it will not connect and I get the same error message.
When it is set to Auto-Detect using IE it tells me I am up to date. That may have been my problem in the first place, something changed that setting somehow.

This seriously needs to be fixed in the program, not with various user-hacks. These are the kinds of foolish things that alienate users.

I'm getting this same error trying to update avast! Free from 5.1.864 to 5.1.889, on Win XP SP3. Never used a beta, never used a proxy; tried switching from "Auto detect" to "Direct connection", which didn't help.
Since I'm on dial up, I'm reluctant to try reinstalling if it's not sure to fix the problem. Think this will be fixed soon? I think I may just wait.

It was acknowledged as a server error if your proxy settings were at Direct connection, it was corrected and should work on Direct connection or Auto detect again.

I have made sure all 3 computers I am using have settings set to no direct conection, set to auto detect, but am still experienceing problems when Avast Internet Security (paid for) tries to update (set to the default 240 minutes)
It comes up with the red error box, file not found in and either an http 412 or http 512 error.
There is something wrong with this latest version 5.1.889 or the Avast servers that needs to be fixed ASAP

I haven't come across an http error 512 before and a google on it isn't very helpful either and appears to indicate https isn't supported, so I don't see how that could be right.
The http error 412, is more common "HTTP Error 412 - Precondition failed" and I'm not sure what pre-conditions are checked for during an update or if it would fail.

Just tried that (again) on this computer, repair said Avast was successfully updated, but going to the update option I get the error message again:

a ping of 174.36.159.202 says it's a767sl.avast.com

Tried the above on a clean test computer, only has windows 7 home premium installed, no other security software, or 'user' software. OS was a new install from install DVD
Downloaded both files, uninstalled avast using windows uninstall, ran Ccleaner, rebooted into safe mode.
Ran aswClear5.exe and removed Avast from system.
Rebooted into normal mode, reinstalled latest version from the downloaded file, rebooted. The shutdown took a LONG TIME. (approx 10 minutes)
Restart was OK but Avast immediately popped up the red error box saying it could NOT check/update the virus def file.
Tried a manual update, it took 4 attempts before avast successfully checked with the server and verified the latest def file was installed. the first 3 attempts failed with the previous error message (different IP this time, but still an avast one) "other http error (412) while trying 174.120.185.42:80//iav5x/prod-ais.vpx"
It's obvious the 'pre-condition' the http (412) error is that avast isn't getting a valid response from the avast server when checking to see if there is a new virus definitions file available or if it has the latest one.
COME ON AVAST IT"S ABOUT TIME YOU FIXED THE PROBLEM AT YOUR END!!! Getting your users to play around with all these supposed fixes on their computers is NOT WORKING and definitely NOT good customer service!!!
Your update servers are NOT WORKING.
I paid good money for this ESSENTIAL security application, you need to fix the problem your users are having ASAP!!!

thought it was just me. I get the same problem on both my computers. XP and Win7.
Only started happening this morning also tried playing with proxy settings.
Ive had any trouble with avast before and ive never installed a beat of prerelease

The only other factor I can think of is that ISP caching may be the cause. I'm with Telstra Clear/Paradise cable, and their caching servers have caused problems in the past with online updating, streaming video performance, and access to certian websites, but with the error only starting with the avast update to version 5.1.889 I dont think it is an ISP problem.

I am with Slingshot ISP, i think it will just be a waiting game being the weekend. Not really in a position to complain as using Avast free unlike yourself

I'm having problems with Avast's update, too. Went through the update this morning early and got the error message. And yet when I check the serial number of my latest version, it shows 1.889 has loaded. I'm assuming that, despite the messages to reload, that I can leave it as is because, evidently, the new version is in place. I'm not going to fool around with it. Hope Avast will clarify what went wrong to reassure users!
(I use the Avast free version; Windows Vista; Mozilla Firefox.)

All computers still have the problem, and manual updates takes 3 - 4 attempts before the latest virus definition file (110115 dated 16/01/2011 01:41:24am) is successfully loaded.
The third computer successfully loaded the latest definition file on boot, but the boot took twice as long as normal waiting for Avast to complete it's update check; Trying a manual update just generates the http 412 error again.
I'm 99% certain it's not an ISP caching problem as my ISP's caching servers are updated at least once every 24 hours.
I logged a 'trouble ticket' last night with Avast but haven't had any response yet.

Still not resolved on my Win7 machine.
The same error popped up on XP even though I'm on a much older Avast Free version on that machine (something like 5.1.6x) but the exact same error occurred during an auto update. Somehow it resolved itself but it's not going away on Win7.
Baffled.

I agree w/ you completely (even though I'm using the Free version). Asking users to re-install the application when it's clearly not a problem at their end (only started after the latest program update) is not a good idea at all, especially when you need to shut everything you're working on down to restart the machine TWICE in order to re-install. Drives me nuts.
Avast, please resolve this asap - ALL versions, including Avast Free. We've never had such a problem w/ your software before. Why all of a sudden and why is taking so long to resolve?

XP alerted me my definitions were out of date and stated the version of the new ones but failed to download them but my WIN7 machine is still oblivious.

Same problem. Fresh install of Win 7 Pro and Avast. Program reports it is at correct version but I got, and still get, error 412. ISP is Paradise.
And they want me to move to, or look at, cloud computing !!!!!!!!!!

Just did a manual check for the virus def file, successful on first attempt, virus def file updated again today now is 110115-1 at 08:47:12am. Second attempt failed again with http 412 error, and auto update is still showing red failed warning.

AVG is working and scanned computer. No viruses. Please help.

I managed to force an update manually, it takes repeatedly pressing check for updates around 8 to 10 times.
But the issue is still there next time i try, i repeated the process just to confirm i was up to date.
At least it got my definitions up to date

You're absolutely right. What's more, I sent Vlk the log file he requested in another thread via email (as per his request) and there's been no reply for almost 48 hours. I suppose it's because of the weekend? Still waiting for Avast to wakey wakey. Hope that'll be soon because this is just too annoying.
Looking for other, BETTER alternatives than Avast by now. Maybe it's just time to move to greener pastures, eh, Avast Free users?

You can not have 2 anti virus applications on your system.
You will have to choose between avast! or AVG.

Ok guys, I think I've made my decision. I'll be switching over to AVG if Avast doesn't succeed in either effectively responding to the several complaints posted here and possibly in other threads within the next 24 hours (to be fair to them since this is the first time I've had a problem w/ the free version). Just read a really useful article on AV software in Web User magazine and Avast didn't even feature in their top-ten list of both paid and free AV software. AVG, the FREE version mind you, was on TOP of the list!
Edit: It's actually a top 14 list, not top 10.

Just read a really useful article on AV software in Web User magazine and Avast didn't even feature in their top-ten list of both paid and free AV software. AVG, the FREE version mind you, was on TOP of the list!
Edit: It's actually a top 14 list, not top 10.

I try to update manually and it updates for a second and then nothing. Says Total Time 1sec. 0_o

I don't know why i didn't think of this sooner but by flushing my DNS cache i am manually getting updates or notification "already up to date" after 2-3 attempts at updating manually
But the issue is still there but getting better

Tried your suggestion and was able to manually download the latest definitions to 110116-1. I then retried using the manual download but again received the 412 error.
The update Program is also showing the 412 error. Any further suggestions?

They've worked fine for over a year. Not even going to argue that.

Also in NZ. Had the same 412 error yesterday Sunday morning (NZT) trying to manually update program to 889 from 864 after receiving blue notification pop-up at computer start up.
412 error also on manual definition update attempt and several attempts later for both program and definiton updates.
Late in afternoon (after computer on all day and no pop ups)checked Avast interface again. Current program version now showing as 889! A manual check of definitions worked ok but told me I had the latest,(showing 110115-1 all day)
This morning Monday 8.15 am, no auto pop up occurred at start up.
A manual attempt straight after downloaded 110116-0. 4 hours later, midday it automatically updated to current 110116-1.
Looks like they fixed it hopefully. Cheers.

Thanks ive been looking for 5.0.677, does avast provide any md5 hashes so i no its not been fiddled with? (paranoid about what i install)

Also in New Zealand. Same problems updating virus definitions automatically (and manually) with the new version 5.1.889 since installing over 667 3 days ago using Update Program button. This problem has happened a couple of times before with previous version updates, and has usually been corrected quickly. I seem to remember that on one occasion the NZ server was overloaded by so many people trying to update at the same time - could that be the problem now?
Anyway, Avast has fixed things promptly before, and I'm sure they will do so this time! In my opinion, Avast Free is streets ahead of any other AV progs available (including those you have to pay big bucks for!). I've been using it through several builds now over a couple of years, after AVG for nearly 10 years and a couple of expensive Big Name competitors before that.
Right now, Automatic Update is a complete fail and has been since I installed the new build over 667. I am able to manually update definitions using either the 'Update engine and virus definitions' button or the 'Update Program' button - it just requires perseverance and hitting the button until it gets a solid connection through the 412 errors. I find that the Program button is more reliable and gets through with one or two tries, whereas the Definitions button is less so.
Thanks to Vlk and the other tech guys who know the right answers and give their time. And thanks to Avast for a premium AV app given freely.
I'll just keep hitting the manual button until things are fixed.

I don't know about those, but have been using Filehippo as my primary source of freeware/shareware and updates for several years now - it's a clean, spyware free, ad-free source, and I have not had a dud yet (hundreds of downloads). I can recommend them highly.

Just got a response from the Avast support team to my technical support ticket.
They say there is a bug/problem with v5.1.889 (really? :o) and their advice is to use v5.0.677 until they have fixed v5.1.889 ::)

Booted the computer up at 5.30am to-day 18-1-11 New Zealand time, the *red* avast update notice appeared instead of the normal green notice. Went into maintenance/update and done a manual update, this worked and I now have 110117-0 release date 17-1-2011.
I attempted further manual updates and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

Yes. Lots of users have been experiencing this problem ever since they updated Avast free to 5.1.889. The error that pops up on trying to update definitions or the program is: Last encountered error: Other HTTP error (412), while trying...
I emailed you the log you asked for in another thread. Haven't heard back yet... :(

Yes, just to clarify something i updated 2 computers through the program & clean installed 1 to version 5.1.889. All three computers are standalone & had no problem at all updating for several days under the 5.1.889 build.
It just started on Saturday morning New Zealand time all three computers started returning"Other HTTP error (412)" errors both auto and manual updating.
I can force a update by repeatedly manually updating :)

This may actually be a slightly different issue than the one discussed previously by the original poster, that's why I would need fresh logs.
The original issue was solved (and verified by packet dumps), this is likely something different.

Gidday from New Zealand (0900 here 18/1) - day 4 of the "http error 14 saga". Booted computer and Avast automatically updated as it is supposed to do (110117-0). I tried a manual 'update engine & virus definitions' 10 minutes ago and failed the first attempt (error 14) and success on the second kick (110117-1), but a very slow download. Will see how the next automatic update goes.

Not to me, but the forum user can always see their own as long as they are logged into the forum. As an example, I use Firefox as default browser and the cookies keep me logged into the forum, and I see my email address. When I visit the site with Opera, my email address cannot be seen by me because I'm not logged in. Check it yourself for self assurance.

More from New Zealand: After my flash-in-the-pan automatic update early this morning, and a double-tap manual update a couple of hours after that, no success in connecting all day (error 14). Hope I wake up to the fix. :-\

New Zealand 0400 (GMT+13) automatic update to 110118-0 at PC cold boot and again at 0700 auto update to 110118-1 while working.
I have tested the Manual 'Update Engine & Virus Definitions' connection too and connection seems OK without 412 error.
It seems to be fixed now, thanks Vlk.

All is working well here this morning both Auto & manual updates. :)
May i ask if it was a problem with the build or a server issue? as i have a computer i want to clean install & if it was the build i will wait till a new one is released :)
