Title: Just joined forum!,initial problrem download avast 4.0
Post by: deep purple on August 29, 2004, 08:52:25 PM
Hi all i have just joined you all as a newbie,i initially had problems with AVAST 4.0 FREE EDITION,downloaded the program yesterday 27th august 2004,the problem was not the download- but afterwards, after setting up a few preferences, all seemed well, and i did a scan,so far so good,2 PING PONG BALLS in the toolabar.
I did have NAV 2003 still installed but de-activated,so i closed my internet connection down went to bed happy!.In the morning booted up and i had the DESKTOP AVAST ICON appear-though but no BLUE PING PONG BALLS in theTOOLBAR and no control panel?.
I had to uninstall avast totally and reload program, the whole program again everything ok again?,closed down restarted same problem no icons?
After reading that their might be a conflict with running 2 AV PROGRAMS at the same time i UNINSTALLED NAV 2003 and VOILA!,problem solved, learning all the time!,my hesitation in not  getting rid of NAV was my undoing,i was just being wise and careful but learned a lessom ,hope this  helps someone!.

P.S SO far AVAST 4.0 seems to be doing its job ok!

best regards

Hi deep purple, welcome to the forums.

Glad you were able to overcome your problem.

There are many tales of woe about getting rid of Norton's AV in these forums, but many other happy ex Norton users now using avast 4.1

Thanks DAVIDR,for welcoming me to the forum, pleased to hear that i am not alone with problems of getting rid of NAV  programs, also the conflicts that it can cause running (2) AVs togethere even though NAV was disabled,

Hi and welcome, dp (sorry for the "shorthand"),

You'll find that you'll have to get rid of all traces of Norton (files and registry entries) if (as we hope) you decide to stick with avast, and that's a major project -- there's good instructions for that in another thread here somewhere.

I'm surprised you got avast to even install, let alone run -- usually it'll kick back a warning that the installation detected Norton files on your system, and refuse to go any further.  So simply disabling Norton isn't enough.

Best,
Mike

:)Thanks MIKE for the the reply, yes you are probably quite right what you said, considering i uninstalled AVAST 3 times before i decided it was NAV  THAT I HAD TO UNINSTALL!,it was nm fault really i knew that you could not run 2 AV at the same time but i thought if i disable NAV2003 and see  how i get on with AVAST if i did not like it i could reverse back to NAV,as my subscription was soon running out,WRONG,we are all llearning all the time.
I removed NORTON 2003 in the ADD/REMOVE in the CONTROL panel of XPSP2,is their more that i have to remove?,if so where should i look apart from SEARCH,,which i have deleted what was there,AVAST works really well and i have no problems since UNINSTALLING NAV 2003 and re-installing AVAST.

best regards

Norton is like AOL. It like to take over your system.
This should help:
Uninstall Norton Antivirus (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2001092114452606)
Make sure you select the right version!!!
Good luck. :)
