The error is always generated by ATAPI.SYS - here is the report from the minidump:

I have enclosed a copy of all the recent Minidumps in a zipped file to the email address listed above.

The computer belongs to my mother who lives 3000 miles away so I have been trying to figure out what the problem is by remotely connecting to her computer. I have had to restore her computer to a previous backed up image of her hard disk that I know works.
She has the latest 5.1.889.110120 version of Avast

She is running Windows XP Media center edition SP3

Let me know what other information you require to troubleshoot the problem.

Thanks

I am on a Dell D610 and because I have 2 of them I have checked and replaced everything, ram, hard drive (new install of XP), wireless card, cpu fan, cd rom but I still get the same BSOD with a debugging report:
                 0xD1 atapi ! IdePortCompleteRequest +b.
I have uninstalled Avast, downloaded and reinstalled Avast. I still get the BSOD system recovered from a serious error.  I am now on my test of uninstalled Avast again.  Let's see if I get the BSOD this time.  I have to wait so I will write back later.

Averaging 10 crashes a day of 26 minidumps, 25 were atapi.sys and 1 was aswSP.SYS, which is Avast and that is when I uninstalled Avast and downloaded the latest version and reinstalled it but it still crashed. I just uninstalled it again.

Is pk coming back?  Will someone address this issue please?  Your help would be greatly appreciated.  How do we get someone to read this forum or respond?

Don't worry, I read it -- thanks for copy&paste minidump report; if it's not a bug in antirootkit then it must be hdd/hw related (?).
You wrote you'll test the computer without avast - did it help?

So far since uninstall of Avast my pc hasn't crashed.  It's been 2 hours.  I love Avast and have used it all the time for years, it's the only antivirus I strongly recommend to everyone. :)

It has been a day without Avast and only 1 event viewer system error Dhcp 1002.  No crashes.

Hi Peter;
I posted the minidump and emailed you a few days ago. My mom's computer has been stable since removing avast. It hasn't crashed in 4 days. Her computer and my computer were running the same version of avast - her system kept dying but mine was fine. Initiating a scan would always result in a failure of ATAPI.SYS and the blue screen. A DELL system test on the hard disc and memory stress tests were all okay. Unfortunately there is a bug in Avast free which is causing Windows to shut down when it detects the invalid memory reference.

p.s. and a file comparison of the ATAPI.sys on her computer was identical to the file on my machine

The SSPD service is the last info item in event viewer before the crash.  So I took a look at that but it bsod'd anyway.

Wow, this thread is so familiar to me.  I was having the same exact issue on my laptop after upgrading to Avast 6 Free.  I would get occasional BSOD crashes and atapi.sys was always listed as the cause.  I initially thought it was hardware related too.  Ran every diagnostic I could and nothing found any errors - memtest, seatools, etc.  Then, one day
I tried to run a quick scan with Avast and it BSOD'd instantly as soon as the scan started (atapi.sys again).  Did that 3 times in a row.  That is what made me think the new version of Avast was causing the problem so I uninstalled it and replaced it with MSE.  After that, no more crashes.  This was after I had problems on my desktop with Avast 6 Free too.  Not BSOD, but it was hanging whenever I ran a scan with it.  I had several threads on this a few weeks ago and tried everything suggested but the problem persisted so I put MSE on that machine too.  My 3rd PC is still Running Avast 5 and that one has no problems so all of this leads me to think something is quirky in version 6.  I'd prefer to return to Avast in favor of MSE but I'm going to hold off until it looks like whatever was causing the issues has been found and corrected.  I've been using Avast since 2005 (I think) and have always been a fan so I hope to return to it.

Have 2 identical Dell D610's, one runs Avast 6 free just great, the other one bsod's as soon as I install Avast.
No one has any answer.  I have looked at everything side by side on both of them.  Debugging tools say atapi.sys problem.  Really want to find out why?

I seem to be having the exact same problem. And with Avast disabled I have no more problems. Here is my post on this: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=73795.msg615740#msg615740 (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=73795.msg615740#msg615740)
