Title: Avast Free Updates Question
Post by: bruce_b on January 30, 2011, 02:44:21 PM
For Avast Free, does the license renew itself each year
or is that something the user must take care of ?

Also, will Avast Free self update to the next major version
or does it need to be manually downloaded and installed
by the user as new major versions come out ? (I know it
does incremental engine updates automatically)

Nice product so far.

Thanks

You will got a popup when your license should be renew, then you must register. And This version needs to be installed from scratch, i.e. updating from a previous version of avast won't work.

OK  that explains the license renewal which for me is 12/05/11
Avast V6 is still in Beta if I read the info I can find about it correct.
Will Avast notify us when the newer version is final and ready for use ?
Will it retain my settings, such as certain excluded folders or does all
that need to be reset again ?

Thanks

Yes.

You will be able to install version 6.0 over the current version (possibly) and keep all your settings and preferences.

This is good to know. Hopefully it will not be memory hog
as my pc has only 512MB of Rambus (very costly) RAM
in it. At the time it was bought, that was the way to go.

You may want to delay avast! startup with only 512MB RAM.

Right click on the avast! icon in the taskbar then Open avast! user interface then go to SETTINGS then Troubleshooting then select Load avast! services after other system services

With current V5.1.889 it loads fine with normal settings.
Hopefully V6 will be fine as well.

avast 5.1 need very low memory. Only 128 mb. I think for version 6  256 mb ram will be enough
