Title: Avast 6 "like" button and a few thoughts
Post by: williamstam on February 24, 2011, 12:13:29 PM
i agree with leaving it in there for the free versions... but it feels a bit like a slap to the face in the paid for version.. sugestion that in the paid for version we can hide it / it doesnt appear and is on the about page or something..

free = advertising for the paid for avast.. so its good to have the like button on it. but the paid for avast... shouldnt have it

as "cool" as the icons are (big green tick mark) it feels a bit comical.. 5.1 had the whole "professional" touch thing..

over all.. good job :D

when are the webrep plugins for opera and chrome coming :P

and when i clicked like button, it momentarily hanged the Avast gui application.. hope they fix it soon.. and with respect to ur hint abt like button, being an Avast Internet Security user i feel happy to like avast ! its not an AD that pro users need to get rid of

free = advertising for the paid for avast..

That's what the upgrade button (top right corner) and the banner on the summary tab would be for I guess? The "like" thing is just useless social networking crap cluttering the GUI.  >:(

im not sure what the free version has... just wasnt too impressed the first time it opened up and the left side had to be scrolled like 5px lol (http://gyazo.com/8b739912e26fc131ef2e602740834a43.png) i dont see the need for the like button there.. it just feels "cheap" :/ im already spreading the word bout avast... why go and force me into it.. also.. i some how doubt anyone would be pressing that button too often.. maybe give the option on first install? or have a notice "so you been using avast for 2 weeks now.. mind sharing the word? <like btn here>" but not have it popup regularly tho.. like a 1 time deal or somehting.

if a user is really happy bout the program.. they WILL spread the news bout it.. even if they have to type the tweet / fb status themselves.. and IMO a personalised status update.. beats a generic 1 any time.. i dont trust those generic updates

Indeed.. I also real don't like to have this button also on the application. I did pay for it and it is up up to me post recommendations.

Having this button makes me less willing to recommend the software.

Real needs to go this button, should be a opt in option.

I have a few words about it in the free version.  I don't like the twitter button in the threat detected box or the like button on avast! it makes the avast UI look horrible.

An option to hide the button in the paid versions is my opinion.

I'm also clueless as to what the "Like Avast?" button is supposed to do. When I click it, it just says retrieving information then closes and doesn't do anything as far as I can see. I don't mind it being there but it would be nice to know what it's for.

I think it should be an opt in/out for Free and paid versions, even if it means doing a Custom install.  And yes, we should all know what this button is for...hint, hint.

In the next program update, there will be an option (in the program settings) that will allow the user to hide these community features (also including the twitter icon in the virus popups and a few other goodies you may not have discovered yet ;)).

Problem solved I guess?

Thanks
Vlk

Great. The Community tab in settings would be a good place for this.  ;)

It was not really a problem, but thanks Vlk.
The ability to control is always welcome.

I just think the "like" button is a bit too "comodoish" for a company like Avast!   :P

That is nice to hear. But hide the button by default. It makes the GUI ugly. Rather than a like button, why not have a donate button like I suggested last time in the community tab. That is definitely better than a "like button" lol

Absolutely resolved, there is nothing many users dislike than having something forced on them with no way to configure/remove it.

I think we saw that with the 'Protected by avast' boot-time notification poll topic.

What the 'like' button does is annoy the Hell out of me after paying for AIS and evanglising it with everyone I know. I dislike the moronic facebookisation of the world and am disappointed to see the avast! people being suckered in like sheep.

I dislike it so much, in fact, I uninstalled V6 and put V5 back in where it will stay until the avast! crew yank the damn thing or have it hidden by default.

If they decide not to, I am sad to say will be shopping for another application to do the job.

Sorry about a point. I am still using AIS V5, as it is on 3 of my computers. One has avast! Pro, and it was the one that I did the V5 to V6 upgrade to (with the near-immdiate reversion to V5).

But I still despise turning the world into facebook...let the Americans do the experimentation on themselves.

now if we could just hide the green upgrade button in the free version and yes i know its free and the point is to upgrade sooner or later and that is why it is there but if they dont want to hide it at least make it a different color so it blends into the GUI more. the green sticks out. id prefer if it looked like the help center and settings button.

i dont really think that is necessary, ur getting a free product and its an ad for their own product so its completely justified to be there and to be made in a way so that its noticeable.

change it so its orange instead of green than so it fits in with the GUI?

Should it appear in each boot? ???

No, because it has been canned/removed so you shouldn't see it at all now.

i finally realized
why people complain, it's because the Like button is always on top even if the main window height is too small and it creates the 'scroll down/up' phenomen

i not noticed it as my window height is double of normal height (really great we can resize the whole avast control UI window)

yeah this is definitely bad, the Like button should in case of 'not enough height' become equal to the rest of left buttons and be visible only when scrolled down

ofcourse the option to disable it in next update is very nice bonus

it wasn't removed exactly per se, You can still enable it (experimental) via registry entry

As a result of the response in the Poll that Vlk created about it. I believe that there was a post with a piece about being able to change the registry settings to restore it.

U can easily remove the Avast Like Button.  Click on Setting>Community and then untick the box show avast recommendation features'  and then click ok or apply and u will see it's gone
